Nobles of Sirion,

I know the situation is difficult and I would prefer not to distract our mind, focused on military matters, referring to things that might appear as secondary now. But the truth is that they are not secondary: the end of the month is approaching, and with it elections. Last month we had a change in rulership without hearing a single word from any of the two candidates. I'd like to see a true campaign this month, being meaningful elections the foundation of our republic, and for this purpose I intend to start mine in advance: I am putting my name forward for the position of Prime Minister of Sirion.

I would like to underline that my decision to run in these elections was taken some time ago, and not as a consequence of what is happening now. In particular, I have no intention to use the current situation at my advantage as we are all aware that the Prime Minister is not the direct responsible for military matters. I therefore invite you to cast your vote thinking about the future and not the present. I am in fact convinced that, for difficult as it may seem, we will come out from the current situation as we did many times before. It is therefore important, in my opinion, not to dismiss the current elections as negligible and I would thus be honored if you could find the time to pay attention to my letter as well.

Most of you know me already from my days as General, and it is thanks to that experience that now I am confident of being able to do a good work as Prime Minister. What I am referring to is not the military results (good or bad as they may be considered) I had as General, but all the others things that constitute the General's role.

First of all, I had to work in close cooperation with the Prime Minister: Sir Handow first and Sir Romul afterwards, from who I learned many things both about internal administration and foreign diplomacy. I had the privilege of being member of the Realm Council and the Military Council, where I had the possibility to learn how all kind of decisions are discussed and solved according to the rules and the tradition of Sirion as a council and not as individuals.

It was my duty to make sure the military machine of our realm was running smoothly while respecing the hierarchy and freedom of choice of every noble member of it. This means that I often had to confront myself with other members of our realm to achieve various goals, always trying to make so by proposing and discussing rather than ordering or imposing myself, regardless of the authority I owned. I consider the duties of the Prime Minister to be often similar to the above explained situation, and for this I believe to possess the right qualities to handle such task. Many present or past Lords, Dukes and Marshals know me from the relations we had during my Generalship, and I hope they were positively impressed enough to consider me a good candidate for the rulership of Sirion, for I will try to lead the realm with the same firm bur fair approach I had before.

One of the main goals I had in mind to achieve during my rulership is about information. Too often I had the impression, first as noble, afterwards as Lord or Marshal, to be completely unaware of what is happening out of my own little experiences. I believe the Prime Minister, as the most informed noble of the entire realm, should keep all the nobles updated on everything that is worth mentioning, be it news from rest of the continent or what was decided in the councils, of course keeping in mind that some matters must be kept reserved for their purpose.

Moving on to foreign politics, I am firmly of the opinion that there is much work to be done to reaffirm Sirion's diplomatic position in the continent. The succesfull assault Ibladesh lead on Itorunt's last standing stronghold of Semall will surely set things in motion throughout the entire isle, and is an occasion not to be missed for us. It would be unrealistic and sheerly popularity-seeking to set up here a detailed plan for the future diplomatic moves, but what I can guarantee is that I will make all the possible efforts to exploit the future happenings at our advantage.

In particular, this holds true in our current war theatre: diplomacy with our enemies is rather delicate as we are all well aware. But every consequence of our military achievements must be adequately put at use in the talks, while respecting the will of the realm as a whole. I believe we should define more precisely our objectives or the sheer size of our front won't give us considerable advantages any soon. This, in turn, will make negotiations much more effective.

I apologize again to bring up such topic abruptly during delicate military operations, but as I said, I consider elections as the heart of our government system, and nothing should distract us from their regular course.

Feel free to make questions.

With respect,

Sir Meristenzio Peristaltico

Count of Lissambar
