Fussy Mother

Her hand trembled slightly as she stared at the seal stamped on the unopened letter. He had responded quickly to her letter, which brought an intense warmth to her heart, for she knew that he must have so many other affairs to focus his attention upon, yet still he found time for her.

She smiled and ran her fingers over the grooves of the pretty image of the unicorn, remembering that one spectacular day, so many years ago, in the garden of the ducal palace at Lasop...

"You know, that letter isn't going to open itself, dear."

Yleina gasped in surprise at the interruption to her daydream of the romantic picnic and looked up sharply.

"Mother! I, uh..." She cleared her throat with embarassment, while her cheeks flushed.

"I was young once, so I have a fair idea of what you might be feeling... But the Captain General himself? My dear, you have high aspirations, don't you?"

The girl's gaze returned to the letter in her lap, and her heartbeat quickened. She bit her knuckles as she wondered what he had written. Would he agree with her brother and suggest also that she return to the life of a noble? Or would he ask that she continue to look after the common people by defeating the beasts and undead in their lairs, in addition to caring for his equipment? On the one hand, perhaps after she formally announced her true, noble blood after so many years of denying it, they might just have a chance of being together. On the other hand, those secretive, precious meetings between them were quite exciting, to say the least.

"Would you like me to open it for--"

"Mother!"

"Alright, dear, I'll let you be."

Shaking her head, Yleina got up to close the door, so that her mother would not peek her nosy head inside again. Then she sat back down on her bed and, with a deep breath, broke the seal...
