Duty Calls

Xarnelf looked at the missive from the General as he sat in his room at the barracks. He had been staring at it for almost an hour now, though his thoughts had never really focused on its contents; his mind continued to wander as he contemplated the recent happenings--the events that he could remember and the big gap that he could not recall.

Urjintah had informed him of their travels into Lasop and Remton questing for information, telling him that he had spent days researching old tomes in the Arcaean Library but had apparently found nothing useful. The young knight had been shocked at first to learn of all that had occured during the span of time that his fever had stolen from his mind.

His eyes widened as he suddenly realized that his affliction coincided with those of his father and grandfather. Suspiciously, Xarnelf wondered about this concurrence.

What does this mean? Why the three of us? What did we share in common? Why didn't Uncle Wynlar fall ill as well?

The noble squeezed his eyes shut and growled with frustration at the futility of asking himself questions that he could not answer. He gave a great sigh and then took a deep breath, trying to calm down. When he opened his eyes after a few moments, his gaze was drawn towards the message held in his hands.

Sent to all the active nobles of the realm from Lord Helios, the note requested scouting reports of Ethialian lands, hinting at the possible onset of renewed conflict. Pushing his troubling thoughts aside, Xarnelf made up his mind to move out to the bordering regions once more to act as eyes for Taith Aenil.

The young knight entered the main room and found Captain Feralgem. He walked over to his friend, who was eating a light meal on his bunk.

"Jint, duty calls. Gather the men; we leave for Nahad at sunset. Afterwards, we will move for Larmebsi, where I can purchase the services of another scout, since our last one has chosen to spend some time with his family here in Idapur."
