Memory

It was dark, so dark, the world around him was an inky void that had engulfed all light, where was he.

Who was he? He felt something, it hurt to hear, like a death wail of a banshee that resonated throughout the void, he heard a name, Ser Cailin.

That was not his name, it hadn’t been for a long time, not since he was a young boy, Varian and Duncan always teased him by calling him Cali, saying it was a girl’s name.

Varian....his brother had died in a war, fighting the Daubenys, he remembered crying, Duncan didn’t cry, but he did get mad.

Duncan and Cailin grew distant, something was wrong with his brother but he never understood what, not until later.

He remembered when his mother died, Duncan killed her, it was an accident he told their father.

Father didn’t care, he never loved her, she was just another tool to him, that awful man.

He remembered his mother, she always smiled, even when she died, maybe she was happy, maybe she found peace, she always told him that he would be a hero.

Why did she lie?

His memories came back in a blur, battles and wars, scars and trophies.

He felt the sun on his face as he looked off from the battlements, the gold and red banner fluttering high above the City of Abadan.

He was proud, like the lion he wore on his banner in battle.

Lion Knight of Perleone they called him.

It wasn’t enough.

He remembered her, how could he have forgotten her, his early months in Perdan didn’t stick out much.

She did though, shining through like a beacon of hope, she had made him feel safe, made him feel happy.

This was what he wanted, this was the peace he had fought for.

Why was she crying?

He remembered when he had upset her, his mind had so focused on his family, the Legion, the wars, his oaths.

He had forgotten to love her, foolish Apollyon.

He had made it better but then she came, the legion at her back.

She ruined everything, made him doubt, made him think he was worthless.

He had let her ruin his life.

He remembered the fire, the fear of his friends, he had made a mistake, he thought he could burn it all away.

He though he could make it right, he made it worse.

Now they hated him.

He felt the sun again, the warm breeze, he was going back to the city, maybe he could fix this.
