Hathis Da Hadez

Background

Hathis Da Hadez thrived in the days before Northern and Southern Darka became one realm. A ruthless mercenary and astute politician he accumulated great wealth and influence whilst taking care not to rise so high as to become a target in such volatile times. During the war that led to the formation of the great nation of Darka he profited particularly well, some say by playing both sides against the middle, and retired shortly thereafter to found his dynasty.

He had two sons with his wife Riola, the eldest daughter of a powerful Baron from Tara. Hathis' attitude to his family bemused many. His wife lived in a richly appointed townhouse in Saler while, on their fourth birthdays, he sent his two sons separately to two of his other estates.

His eldest son Luthor was sent to his simple but extensive farming estates in Eurotan where the boy learned how to manage the land and was later schooled as a warrior and knight.

His youngest son Haron was sent to the family's grand mansion in Azzal to be tutored in the arts of trade and commerce and the ways of the royal court.

When pressed Hathis would confide to friends that this arrangement was a simple strategy to ensure the welfare of his family. By placing his loved ones at such distance from each other across the realm any local uprising or conflict would likely only claim one of his beloved family. By educating his sons in such different locations and in such different skills at least one would likely thrive in the new Darka whether it's future was in warfare or trade. Additionally he would, as his sons grew and engaged with their peers in society, have influence in and intelligence of affairs across the entire realm. It also gave him an excuse to travel across the realm to visit his family, making contacts and gathering information as he did so. This he did often, sharing his time equally between his sons and wife.

It was a strategy that worked well. His sons excelled in their fields and his wife cherished the time they had together all the more for his regular absence. The rare times that the family could all be together were joyous and filled with stories and laughter with never a dull silence. What's more Hathis' extensive knowledge and contacts from all corners of the realm afforded him considerable political power which he wielded to great effect, always behind the scenes, during Darka's formative years.

Hathis lived to the age of 59 when he was gripped with a wasting disease which quickly robbed him of his health and then his life. He passed away with his wife and grown sons at his bedside, a contented man.
