Matthew is nine months Jackson's junior, though he could pass for his elder brother. Matthew spent time at the local recruitment centers training with the men-at-arms during all of his spare time. His father paid for tutors, as well as disciplinarians, to further Matthew's education. However, using the skills picked up from the fighters, Matthew always escaped to train with them. He has never expected much from anyone, knowing that Jackson will inherit their father's estate. Across the sea, to the continent of Atamara, Matthew sailed in search of glory.

Leaving Home

Matthew left his father's estate before turning eighteen. He was the second of his brothers to set out in search of adventure, and he searched far from home. Feeling as though he needed to escape from the shadow of his father's mediocrity, Matthew sailed to Atamara, finding his way to the Cagilan Empire. Upon arrival, he sent the following letter to Earl Jasper:

Earl Jasper,

I have just arrived on a vessel from the East Continent. I have left my home at such a tender age for one reason: glory. I come here looking for that which my brother chases after so close to home. I seek to serve, rest assured that I am no mindless warmonger. However, I will always endeavor to advance, and I make no qualms about stepping on the toes of others. I tell you this now, and I tell you this clearly: should you ask of me a favor, I shall consider it weighted, and act as I see fit. Should you need me to act, simply order it. I require little in terms of residence, and will take that which you may spare in Ansalle at this time. My scribe has been instructed to await a return parchment with your personal seal.

Ser Matthew Cooper

Sadly, the Earl had no need of another knight at the time, and politely suggested Matthew offer his services to another lord. With graciousness, Matthew sent the following letter to the Earl:

Earl Jasper,

My kind regards for your speedy reply. I hope that we shall meet again in the future. Please enjoy the accompanying sweets. They are the last of my parting gifts from Montauban and I must confess I have not the capacity for the spirits used in the recipe. May you be a stronger man than I.
