Fifth Invasion

The invasion began with three priests of daimon worship. These priests suddenly have shown themselves in different parts of the continent from the blighted regions. Months after the previous invasion, a war broke out in the north and south. In the north, Nothoi-Old Grehk-Sint-Thalmarkin allied with each other to attack Fronen which was strongest in terms of CS (mostly militia). Fronen had five cities under her banner at the time while realms like Thalmarkin and Nothoi only had one.

In the south, Riombara declared war on Enweil to prevent Enweil from helping her ally, Fronen.

While things were chaotic, the priests arrived and started preaching in rural regions of the realms. The priests warned humans of the coming invasion as they offered a way to survive the invasion. Many nobles did not trust daimons as daimons usually offered only two things. Slavery or Death. The south started to work on the peace treaty right away but the north could not agree on things as Old Grehk demanded too much from Fronen.

A couple weeks after the first appearance of the daimon priests, the leader of daimons has shown himself. He called himself 'Overlord' and his lieutenants appeared from the four corners of the continent. They were called 'Nightfalls' of the East, West, South, and North. NotS (Nightfall of the South) attacked Riombara, NotE attacked Fronen but soon changed his/her direction to the south to fight Enweil, and NotN attacked Thalmarkin but was quickly defeated by the allied armies of Thalmarkin and Melhed. NofW attacked Nothoi and won a battle on an open field but was defeated in the capital of Nothoi.

After some 'light' skirmishes, Overlord sent an ultimatum to all rulers of the continent. Enweil responded last and due to this the Overlord and most of his generals began what they promised to be the complete subjugation of humanity by marching against Enweil.

Overlord and most of his TLs gathered in Piwani. Midnight of the South however foolishly attacked Enweilieos, which lost him his army and made him run to his master for his life. Nightfall of the East came to save him in Ulallo but soon retreated once the main armies of Riombara, Enweil and IVF arrived in the region. The allied army of the South attacked Piwani with Fronen and crushed about 10k CS daimons but most of the daimons escaped to other regions just before the attack. Overlord himself moved to Ketampkin so the allied army chased him in hoping to defeat him once and for all. But this was a grave mistake as Overlord vanished just before the attack. But the daimons, even without their master, was a force to reckon with. The daimons in Ketampkin were more cunning, faster and stronger than any other type of daimons faced by humans. These daimons broke the heavy infantry lines and massacred archers. The allied army lost over half of its strength in one single battle. They have only managed to kill off 100 or so daimons while hundreds of humans lost their lives.

Overlord reappeared in Fwuvoghor, crushing what little humans defending the city then moved to Villriil to finish what he began with his TLs. Villriil fell after three days of occupation and Overlord began to move towards west to attack Fengen. Without knowing his plan, Enweil moved towards south to take two rogue regions. This move actually spared Enweil's army from being completely destroyed. Riombara and Enweil decided to gather in Enweilieos and take back Fengen from there.

The Ultimatum of the Overlord

Message sent to the human rulers of Beluaterra (9 recipients)

Your time for deliberation has ended. My sons report no success in their quest, just like I told them. To prove my point with certainty and laugh at them when they return, I am taking their idea up once, and only this once:

I am offering every realm that is willing to accept the Daimon Dominion as the true and justified rulers of this world a peaceful co-existence. Send your oath of fealty and you shall be spared.

Everyone who does not will see their lands burned down, their people enslaved and their souls ripped apart as we feed the soulforges with them.

You should haste with a reply, even if your reply is the stupidity I expect from your inferior race. For the last realm to reply will be the first one to be destroyed. By your actions, you choose your doom.

Overlord

Summary

(by Dunbor Lorganson, Duke of Unger)

in the past few invasions, we have gotten familiar with the daimons and their forces. Last invasion, our continent served as a battleground between the monster hordes, the undead legions and the daimonic forces. All of humanity on this continent was threatened with destruction, but due to fierce fighting, the magic of the Servants of the Light and the appearance of the Archons, we survived. Out of all surviving realms, our Kingdom was the only one that did not bow. Others surrendered or even worse, allied with the invaders to ensure their survival or for whatever other reason. When their forces had finally all disappeared, their shadow still lay across vast stretches of land. It is there that they fought eachother and the daimons emerged victorious, starting the invasion of our continent.

But this time, it seems that all human realms stand united. And it is indeed as Lady Annaej has said: Overlord has stated he wants to enslave all of humanity or use us a fuel for his soulforge (whatever that may be). Either way, these daimons can be killed and our intent is to do just that. I personally wounded the Nightfall of the North in the battle of Wailing Wood where we solidly defeated his army and then chased him back into the blight. Later on we fought together with Melhed and aided in his capture, he was subsequently executed in Agyr. In Riombara, the Nightfall of the South was killed in battle.

After these first casualties the Overlord made the announcement to the rulers that we could choose between enslavement or death, the last one to reply would be the first one to die, he said. Then he tricked us into believing Old Grehk was the last one while in fact it was Enweil. The fools thought Overlord simply forgot them and didn't say anything while the North's armies gathered in defense of Old Grehk. When all of the armies were gathered, he went back into the blight and attacked Enweil a day later. Sending the Midnight of the North after us. The united armies of the North than chased him out of our lands (after he had unsuccessfully besieged Unger) and to the South until we could no longer follow.

Enweil, IVF and Riombara have now won a battle against the daimons, but lost more. We are gathering our armies to march South in their aid. In the mean time, it seems they're trying to cut off the North from the South. Zuhle has been blighted yesterday.

It was the 1st Son (a daimonic priest and son of Overlord) who warned us of this and told us we'd need to activiate 8 portal stones to stop it from happening. I'm not sure if those were actually gathered, but either way, we were too late. There is a lot of distrust towards the Sons and I wouldn't trust them myself. However their warning seems to have been justified and I think that we might want to try and cautiously cooperate with them in the future.

That's pretty much it in a nutshell. You can read more here: Beluaterra/Fifth Invasion

Types of Daimons

(This is mostly conjecture and a bit of roleplaying flavour. All the terms are invented, in-game they just show up as "Daimons", but different Daimon units can be quite different)

Netherworld

  • Warlords - Leaders of the daimons. They are capable of flying at an incredible speed, travelling over a great distance in a single day. Warlords are powerful, both physically and mentally. Physically, they are over three meters in height and have extremely muscular bodies. Menthally, they are very unique. Unlike any being in Beluaterra, their presence causes havoc and insanity around other beings. A mere glance of these fearsome creatures can cause fear among weaker beings. In some cases, an eye contact with them even caused a heart attack. They are few in number and barely show themselves even on the battlefield. Known daimons in this class: Overlord, Nightfalls and Midnights.
  • Wonderers - Priests of the daimons. They look just like the warlords except they can change their shapes as they desire. They prefer to walk and can adapt to variety of different environments. Can learn any language within a week of time. They can sap life energy from weaker beings to replenish their own strength. The wonderers gather information needed for the warlords and offer deals of submission to other sentient beings.
  • Gorgons - Cavalries of the daimons from their original homeland, Netherworld. These frightful daimons are never alone. They generally move as a large horde and destroy everything that gets in their way. The Gorgons are usually around a meter in height but when they get excited, they can grow up to two meters. As they grow, their skins become harder and thicker, solid enough to ignore arrows. When humans clashed with Gorgons in Ketampkin, they realized only cavalry units can generate enough power to pierce the thick skins of a Gorgon or scrolls of daimon banishing. Like any other daimon, Gorgons cannot survive the devastating power of the scrolls. Now most of the stampedes are in Ketampkin.
  • Flametongues - Archers of the daimons from their original homeland, Netherworld. Ten of these creatures can turn a village into ashes within hours. Usually between 1.5 m to 2 m tall, and with their long claws, they can cut through even a thick plate mail. The most frightening thing about these daimons is their ability to breath a ball of fire from a range to incinerate their enemies from afar. These fire balls can be deadly even from twenty meters away. First sighted when Nightfalls first appeared in the South.

Blgihtborns

  • Spitters - Archers of the daimons from the blighted land. They are weaker cousins of Flametongues as they lack the claws to fight in a close range. They spit teeth which can pierce a iron clad shield with ease. They are about half a meter smaller compared to their stronger cousins.

Daemon Worship

With what little information we have at the moment, it does not require the presence of one of the three priests to spread the religion. It is spreading slowly but it is indeed spreading without anyone preaching in regions.

Known Priests so far (Sighted)

1st Son - Enweil, Riombara - Priest, Infiltrator

2nd Son - Thalmarkin, Melhed

3rd Son - Sint

Daimons Spotted

Daimons leaders can use magic! Caution should be the first response to seeing their leaders.

'Overlord' - Netherworld Daimonlord. Drove messengers sent by other leaders mad. The creature seems to be ruthless.

'Nightfall of the East' - Netherworld troopleader. First spotted in Tey Gren leading 70 daimons, Dec 1, 1011.

'Nightfall of the North' - Netherworld troopleader. First spotted in Wailing Wood leading 100 daimons of roughly 5800 CS, Dec 2, 1011. <Death Confirmed> Executed by Melhed.

'Nightfall of the South' - Netherworld troopleader. First spotted in Glongin leading 80 daimons of roughly 5500 CS, Dec 3rd, 1011. <Death Confirmed> Killed in Action

'Nightfall of the West' - Netherworld troopleader. Seems to be leading 120 daimons in Naraka, Dec 06 1011.

'Midnight of the North' - Netherworld troopleader replacing Nightfall of the North after Nightfall was executed in Melhed.

'Midnight of the South' - Netherworld troopleader replacing Nightfall of the South was spotted in Lopa on Dec 17th.

Timeline of the 5th Invasion

Reeds

The Commencement of War

Reeds started off the fifth invasion supporting a military which was rapidly expanding, but within her bowls lurked the rotting hand of Tonkotsu and Duke Solip's vile laboritory. He was convinced that this invasion would be his chance to resurrect his God-Queen and so anxiously awaited the Netherworld's March. As their were rumours both they and the Undead could manipulate the planes of life and death, he kept quite about the events and letters and set to preparing himself for his own journey once the blight was broken near Reeds.

The news from Reeds in Early December, letter from a Priest:

This may strike you as the most uncommon event, especially since us men of the cloth do not generally talk about what we learn from the faithful. Nevertheless, with the darkness creeping ever closer, it was my duty not only to our city and indeed Nothoi itself, but also to our god Hemaglobe to make sure these news reach the ears of one such as yourself, who may use them to good ends.

The man did not identify himself to me, but asked to speak in private. A wish that we priests grant regularly, as many of the faithful come to us with private matters to ask for counsel or lighten the burden on their souls. This one did not seem so different, beginning with how he needed to talk with someone about the things he had seen and done. Things he felt horrible about, but needed to do to survive, or so he claimed. I figured him a soldier at first, given our recent wars.

It was when he claimed to be from the lost city of Poitra that I became aware this would be unlike any other talk of the week, or indeed of the year. As you know, of course, Poitra lies deep within the darkness we call the Blight, on the very river that flows next to our own fair city. Nobody has heard a word from there for almost a year now. We believed there were no survivors, as we heard from your soldiers that any attempts at entering the Blight ended in disaster.

Yet this man claimed to have left Poitra but a month ago. His description of the city was convincing enough that he must have been there, though it could of course have been before the Blight. But he did not seem to be deceitful, and what would be the point in telling a priest a fantasy story in private? Thus, I shall relate a summary of his words to the lord of our fair city.

As I mentioned, he claimed to hail from Poitra. According to his words, when the city was conquered by the brutal, unearthly creatures we call the Daimons more than a year ago, it was badly damaged, but not entirely destroyed. The Daimons raged in the city and surrounding lands for weeks, but many people survived by hiding, and many more surrendered to the strange invaders and were enslaved. In fact, according to his words, as much as a third of the inhabitants were still alive in Poitra when the Blight covered it.

When the Blight arrived, it seemed to be nothing but an especially large and dark thunderstorm at first. But when it reached the city, thousands of people died from apparently the same things that make any march into the Blight impossible to this day: Choking, insanity, terror. But, as he claimed, once the initial front went by, it was possible to survive. While the skies remained dark and everything seemed to be covered in a dark fog, those who survived were once again subject to their new masters cruelty.

He gave a long and detailed account of slavery under Daimon rule, the details of which I shall spare my lord. Mostly, the Daimons left the humans to themselves and neither cared for them nor attacked them. Maybe one in a dozen, however, was taken in for forced labour. There was no apparent purpose behind this work, and those who were too weak to continue were taken and never seen again. Most simply tried to survive, farming what the burnt land would still carry. Few considered escape, as it was obvious that the Blight covered everything and even if one could reach the edge, crossing the zone of death that was almost certainly still all around it would be close to impossible.

But humans are strong creatures. While they were suffering and enslaved, they held on, and built new hope. Alas, most found their hope in worship of their slave masters, considering their cruelty the just punishment for their faults or those of their fathers. The unnamed man speaking to me was not among them. He found something else: Love. A young woman, beautiful despite the hardship, captured his heart. They fell for each other and it made their lot much easier to bear.

But it was not to last. After a while, she was with child. As the Daimons largely ignored the humans within their domain, except for those they forced into whatever unfathomable labor was done in those slave camps, they had a new hope to live for. It was not to last, for the Daimons also occasionally took people seemingly at random. His wife was taken. Furious and with nothing left to loose, he confronted the Daimon lord of Poitra, but was only told that the Daimons had been in need of „fuel for the soulforges“, whatever that meant. He fled the city the next morning, in hopes of finding some way to be re-united with his wife and unborn child. His rather long report on the formerly fertile lands outside the city I shall but sum up. Within the Blight, most plant life and animals are dead. Only the especially resilient have survived and are hanging on. Most of the landscape is barren and blasted. Entire dead forests cover parts of it. Rivers still flow, but the water has become thick and dark.

Due to the lack of sky and the ever-present fog, orientation is difficult in the Blight. The man did not know which direction he was going. What my lord may consider important from the journey, of which once again I will leave out the details that are horrible and depressing but ultimately unhelpful, is that the man claims to have met one of the wizards within the Blight. You may have heard that there are rumours about these people every few months. It is said they possess ancient knowledge of magic, long since lost to the world. Despite the harsh surroundings, the old man appeared to be travelling freely and untroubled. I cannot say if this gives credence to their claim on magic, or to the rumours that they are in league with our unworldly foes.

The „wizard“ told the refugee that he could give him instructions for an ancient ritual that would bring him out of the Blight safely. As for payment, he asked for a strange list of mostly everyday items, though these were difficult to acquire in the broken lands. But the task completed, the man who spoke to me was indeed handed a scroll that contained a magic ritual. Which he promptly completed. Whatever magic or other ungodly force he unleashed, he found himself near the city gates of our city Reeds, potentially hundreds of miles from wherever in the Blight it was that he had wandered to! These are most dire news for us, my lord. If this strange so-called „wizard“ can bring a man to our very gates, who is to say that the enemy does not possess the same powers? Are we prepared to fight an army that we cannot see approaching? Has the threat just increased even more?

I tried to convince the man to contact you himself, for even though he is but a commoner, he carries important information. For as unlikely as his story sounded, I have talked to many men in my time, and none of them would have been able to tell a tale with this many details so convincingly and without error unless it was at least largely true. He appeared calm after we had spoken, but still distraught and shattered. He remained in the temple while I composed this letter, originally intended to convince my lord that the man is not crazy. However, when I returned, my servants told me he had left with a haunted look in his eyes, speaking about his need to find someone who will return with him and rescue his wife. Apparently, after the conclusion of his ordeal, the madness he had held back so long had finally gotten to him. May Hemaglobe guide him so whatever he does will aid us in our battles.

Melhed

A Call for Unification

At the signs of the first Daimons, Consul Soren of Melhed, called for the stop of wars and the unification of humanity against the Daimon threat. This was met with resounding agreement, though it is difficult to set aside differences. Humanity might actually work together for once.

Riombara

The court received a letter regarding a peasant diary, leading to guesses around the existence of survivors within the blight that allegedly can be trespassed by humans somehow. read the letter

Thalmarkin

Northern Alliance

An Oath by the Bridge

King Fingolfin, King Michael, and Consul Soren all met in Yipinalke to reaffirm their alliances and pledge to stand together against the might of any threat. Gifts were given in the form of the Elemental Compendium of the Undead, which was gifted to King Fingolfin, and the Longsword of Daemonslaying which was given to King Michael by the Consul. Soren himself, swore on his Gem of Fire.
