January Elections

East Continent on 2006.01.01

This month a new general was to lead Fontan, after Lycastus stepped down to run for judge. The vote for general was so close that it could have been decided by a single person, as Hannibal edged out Sparky 41% to 39%. They both agreed that Sparky would be the realm's Vice General, to give orders when needed or during emergencies.

The positions of ruler, judge, and banker all went to the incumbents. Despite challenges from Lycastus and Jim, Lilith won the judgeship again with 46% of the vote. Zedd was re-elected ruler with a solid 56% majority, while challenger Tempest came in second with 17%. Gregor stayed on as banker against Lancelot and Baldor, but faces continued debate about the realm's taxation and distribution schemes.

Rebellion

Less than a day after the election, a previously quiet troop leader named argiris initiated a rebellion. In a long speech he gave his premise that the realm wasn't expanding enough, that no former Avamarians should be admitted to the realm, and that there should be free and fair elections giving everyone the same number of votes. Most troop leaders found this last claim puzzling, since free elections with equal votes for everyone were already in place.

Nearly all troop leaders soon joined the loyalists. Three others, Grumble, Ultima, and Nyarlathotep, joined the rebellion. At the same time zedd was wounded by an unknown assailant, but no conclusive links to the rebellion could be found. Civil war broke out in Fontan city over a number of days, but the rebels were sorely outnumbered in each battle. Eventually their forces were completely eradicated, ending the rebellion.

Judge Lilith initiated a trial, and Lancelot volunteered as defense lawyer while Tempest chose to be prosecutor. Grumble recanted his support of the rebellion, agreeing that elections were the proper outlet for change. The other rebel leaders remained silent. Argiris was sentenced to death for initiating the rebellion, but he was already gone by the time the proclamation was issued. Ultima and Nyarlathotep were permanently banned from the realm. Grumble was given a much lighter fine of 50 gold for his mistake, and the relatively new troop leader will continue to be a first-class member of the Fontanese nobility.

Setback in Krimml

In the second day of the new year, Oligarch and Perdan mounted a massive attack on Krimml. In a long and brutal battle that saw seige engines raining havoc upon all of the city's walls and stoneworks, the surviving attackers managed to drive the remaining militia into the surrounding fields. Once inside they quicly set to their barbaric work, terrorizing and stealing from the populace, removing key stones and supports to further ruin the city, and driving Fontanese citizens from their own homes. A counterattack the next day furthered the attrition as more than two dozen troop leaders on all sides lay wounded, but the invaders still remained in most sections of the rubble-strewn stronghold.

With the invaders' numbers reduced, Fontanese and Sirionite forces rallied to surrounding regions to regroup and take back the city. The Oligarchians and their allies attempted to squash the gathering counterattack force in Commonyr, but instead were routed themselves. With few remaining foes in Krimml, the Fontanese army made short work of retaking the city and beginning to rebuild its defenses. But the demolished stoneworks will take much time and effort to repair. The best masons from across the realm are already drawing plans and gathering materials to restore Krimml to its former stature or better.
