A Short Paper on Diplomacy and Trust

Diplomacy is rooted in a basic assumption of trust. As a representative of your realm, when you speak or write to others, you have not only your own reputation at stake, but also that of your realm.

Diplomats frequently must discuss and negotiate matters with other diplomats or realm leaders which put them at odds. When there is disagreement or conflict, the diplomats of the two sides have very different ideas about what they want, and about what they are willing to give up for it. A shortsighted diplomat might lie, or make empty promises to achieve their ends, and they may see short term gain. But reputation is important, and if a diplomat does not operate from a position of trust and integrity then any future correspondence is clouded by the past.

Honesty is often difficult, even if friendly negotiation. A diplomat must be careful with their words, using them wisely. They must attempt to not reveal their entire hand, while at the same time giving. A diplomat who holds his cards too closely against his chest stands to achieve nothing. A diplomat who shows his cards early stands without leverage in the negotiation.

The path of the diplomat is not an easy one, yet it comes more easily to some than others. As nobles, we all must be skilled in the art, as we practice diplomacy with our fellows at least, even if not with nobles of another realm.
