Village Confusion
Part I - Posted 2005-07-19

(in a village by a river)

Dakthohol tried to think of all the things he could have done wrong to upset the man but could not thing of anything. Maybe it was some local taboo he had broken without knowing it. As he saw the village and neared it, the sun was beginning to get him really warm again. He could see some children playing in the river, shouting and screaming loudly. As he got closer they saw him and he could see the oldest girls running for their cloths holding them up in front of their chests and with some of the boys running in between the houses. All of a sudden it struck him that they think his naked chest was a sin. Right before he got the first houses he saw some cloths hanging to dry on a line and thought that he could cover himself with one of them. Some of them was long and obviously for the legs but they would not cover his chest so he choose one that was nice and round with a waistline to tie around the chest. It what nice white with blue ribbons, short and airy, not to warm and covered his chest perfectly down to right below his navel. Perfect. Now he just had to find this Logman and all would be fine!

The first he met was a little girl on a stick-horse with a doll her hand. She started to stare at him as he asked her where he could find the Logman. Without looking away from him she pointed at the only stone building in the village he could see and he walked to it. It had a sign over the entrance he could not read but at both sides of the letters there was a doubleheaded hammer upside down. He walked up the three steps in front of it and pushed it this time. Obviously the wrong way was he pushed back as the door opened and a man in uniform appeared. “Are you the Logman?” asked Dakthohol. “No he is inside to the right” he answered when he went by. Dakthohol entered and nocked on the open door to the right.

“Enter!” said a huge man sitting behind a way too little desk for him. “What do you want?” he said without looking up from his porridge. “I was told to go to tell you to send me to doom” Dakthohol replied. “And why was I to send you to doom?” he took a piece of paper and a pen without looking up. “I do not know” “Who is responsible for sending you then?” he wrote something on the paper. “Iam” “Are you taking me for a fool!” he looked up “No, no, Iam send me” “Oh, Iam. I see” He pointed at Dakthohol’s with the pen: “Are you walking around in that?” “Yes” Dakthohol looked down himself. “Then follow me” he said, getting up walking past Dakthohol out the door across the hall into a room on the other side. “You can wait in there” he said pointing into a little cell with a thick wooden door and bars for the window. Dakthohol walked in, the man closed and locked the door and said: “You can wait here till the Eldermen have time to Doom you.

(In a village by a river)

Dakthohol sat on the low wooden bed staring at the old dusty and filthy straws on the floor without seeing them or the floor. Why had they locked the door behind him, he had just done what the men had told him too. He could not possibly have done anything wrong, could he? No, no the man had been friendly towards him. It was alright. ‘He will come back and all will be fine’ he thought as he leaned back against the wall and slowly slumbered off.

He woke as he heard the door slam in the main hall and someone curse: “Oh, that bloody door! I’ll kill that daft bugger…” disappearing out the same door. ‘Where is he’ thought Dakthohol. It had to be hours since the man had locked him in the cell and by now Dakthohol needed to go outside to relieve himself. He tried to find the night pot or something similar and then to call for someone, both in vain. What then? He really had to go. He looked around for a solution and saw that he was not the first one that had had this problem. There in the corner there had obviously been urinated many a time, so it was likely the thing you did around here. He went over and started process, whistling low from relief. Halfway through he heard a strong, harsh voice behind him: ”You are not pissing in the corner, are you! Now I have to go through all the trouble finding fresh straw to put on and all. You stop that right now!” This was easier said than done but Dakthohol did his best and the man went on: “You better get ready the Logman will be on the steps with the Doom. Get you close on, will you.” Dakthohol pushed a little straw over the poll on the floor with his foot to try to confine it to the corner and went over to the man. “Are you sure you are ready?” the man said looking at him funny. “Yes” Dakthohol said. “Then come along” He let him our in the hall and out the main door and set of across the square towards a table and a chair set in the middle of it all.

(A town square by a river)

As Dakthohol and the guard neared the chair and desk, people started to gather around the set up obviously looking forward to the coming events. Dakthohol was told to stand in the centre in front of the desk and wait. All around him people was talking and obviously having a good time, whispering, giggling and laughing while repeatingly pointing and looking at him. Behind the desk a growing group of young girls where gathering, obviously very interested, very blushing and heavily giggling. Dakthohol felt very unpleasant by all this attention and looked around for a place to hide but al was bare and by now the wall of people looked solid. On top of it the sun was baking hot right over his head into his eyes.

Something was starting to happen at his right: A large umbrella was moving behind the crowd. Then it moved into it and strait for the chair. As people moved out of the way Dakthohol saw the Logman making way for a little round man in heavy black cloths. He sat down in the chair with a man holding the umbrella behind him and the Logman to his right. He put a large black book and some papers on the desk, took out a hat box and opened it. The hat he took out and placed on his head to the sudden silence of the crowd was the weirdest hat Dakthohol could remember to have ever seen. It was black cone-shaped with blue undulating lines around it. On top of it a bright blue, green and orange fish was on a stick gently turning to the weak fluctuation of the wind.

The little man cleared his throat and the Logman looked conceited around the crowd and said: “Hear, hear, hear! The doom desk is set and Doom is the honourable Cod-Master of Byriver, Humptus Bolder. The Stander stands for blasphemy, theft, general disobedience and most importantly attempted rape!” At the last a whisper went trough the crowd accompanied by several “Ooh” and “My god!”

The Doom looked up at him and said: “How do you stand at the charges?” Dakthohol was confused and did not know what to say and said just: “Eehhh…” What was it they thought he had done? “Well speak up!” “Ehh, aa, ignorant?” was all he could think of saying. “Ignorant!” the Doom cried “are you making fun of me?” “No, no I just don’t know what I have done. I can’t remember much” “Well then let me refresh your memory for you. First you tried to force yourself on farmer Iam’s daughter, then you stole cloth from madam Bickery and all the time you walk around in general disobedient, blasphemic Nakedness!” Dakthohol grew aware of his nakedness and tried to cover al of his chest. All the way up to the clavicles, saying: “I am very sorry, I did not know.” The crowd burst out in laughter and Dakthohol looked confused down himself. “The other way you moron!” the Logman said stepping forward pulling down the skirt to its proper place. “Oh, I though…” Dakthohol said “I am sorry I could not remember. I do not remember much…” “You do not remember you say. Why not?” “I can’t remember” “Hmm, where is you from then?!” “I can’t remember” “You must be able to remember where you come from” “Well from the coast over the mountains” “Well do you remember who you are?” “I only know my name: Dakthohol di Saladi’ilm” “Well we will work from there.” the Doom said and turned to the Logman “Send a runner to Ipsosez to hear if they know of him.” Turning to Dakthohol again he continued: “Well on to the rest of the charges. How do you stand?” “Ignorant?” Dakthohol tried again. “Ignorant!” “Yes, I do not know Iam’s daughter. I only saw her briefly then Iam told me to go here.” “Hmmm, I will have to ask him then…What about the theft?” “I do not know what I stole” “That skirt!” “Oh, I am sorry I was trying to be less naked. Madam Bickery can have it right back” Dakthohol started to take of the skirt to the enjoyment of the crowd especially behind the Doom. “Pull that up again” the Doom said realizing where things where going. “Get the tailor to make him some cloth and put him back in the cell and feed him.” he said to the Logman. “That will be all for today!”
