Antonio held his grimy sword close to him as he trudged through the thick undergrowth. He had been following a small warband of monsters for hours, finally catching up with them near a clearing and he now prepared to ambush and slaughter them. With a barbaric cry, he burst into the small clearing, rapidly dispatching two monsters with a single swing of his sturdy sword, before wheeling around and plunging the steel blade into the stomach of another charging beast.

A deafening roar shook the ground, and Antonio turned to behold the most intimidating monster he had ever seen. With bloody spikes dotted down its spines and arms, and claws that could rend the very air in two, the huge brute was truly fearsome.

It's now or never, Antonio, he thought. As the alpha monster took a deadly swipe at him, Antonio nimbly dodged aside, inflicting a deep cut down its arm. As the outraged monster snapped at him with razor-sharp fangs, Antonio stepped to the side and stabbed at its eyes, blinding it before slicing through its neck with a single heroic blow.

Exhausted, dirty, and bleeding from multiple small cuts, Antonio tiredly rummaged through the small rucksack the alpha monster carried. He pocketed several silver coins before taking out a small golden ring that was set with a black and silver gem. While tarnished and grubby, there was no doubt that this was a magical item of great power. His heart leapt: Antonio had finally found something worth fighting for.
