EXCLUSIVE! Interview with Duchess Katayanna of Poryatown
June 16th Macal
Duchess Ogren has kindly agreed to answer the Lurian Weekly's questions pertaining to the secession of Poryatown and the conflict between Verus Luria and Pian en Luries.

Q: Can you tell us your reasons for supporting the secession?

A: I did not at first support the seccession. I did understand the reasoning I think to some degree. As I had only limited knowledge of the situation. I still do not support the seccession though I was roped into it by the previous Duke.

Q: Would you say that Verus Luria still has a chance of success?

A: No. Verus Luria has never had a chance. Duke Kaennji did what he did in anger and never thought it through. Now he is a priest and fleeing. no matter what he calls it he is running away.

Q: Under what terms do you believe the current conflict might be brought to a close?

A: According to General Diodorus and Queen Alanna there can be no peaceful solution. I have made every attempt to find one and Pian en Luries refuses to come to the table. They want only bloodshed.

Q: Could you outline what, in your eyes, brought Verus Luria to its current situation?

A: That is a bit harder to do. I was countess of Cadier when this all started and I was having enough issues with that. But from the little I can piece together the Queen of Pian en Luries has a tendency to run her realm as a dictatorship. there were allot of very harsh judgments laid down at the Queen's command. Duke Kaennji has issue with that and other issues I believe that were not made public knowledge. Duke Kaennji acted rashly in succeeding from Pian Luries. and the unforgiving government of Pian en Luries wishes to punish everyone, even those taht are only adhering to their oath of fealty and when that oath is finally broken will not allow for a peaceful return of the duchy to Pian Luries.

Q: Is there a fundamental difference between Verus Luria and Pian en Luries?

A: In the beginning I do not think so. However since Duke Kaennji has fled the land, and new government has been chosen. Yes. the new government acknowledges the foolhardiness of Duke Kaennji and would seek peaceful resolution. Pian en Luries refuses to allow such a thing.

Q: What are your feelings towards those who have deserted Verus Luria?

A: Those that betrayed their oath should be reprimanded. Those Lords that made a choice to switch their regional fealty made a decision for their region. The best one they could under the circumstances. I do not hold them at fault in any way.

Q: How do you see Verus Luria and Pian en Luries progressing on an international level?

A: When I was appointed as both General and Duke of Poryatown, I had hopes of ending the conflict and returning the Duchy of Poryatown to Pian en Luries as it should be. But, alas the General and the Queen seem bent on destruction instead.

The Duchess also asked for a personal statement, detailing her reasons for joining Verus Luria, to be included.

I was countess of Cadier as many already know when this all started. I was tending my region and not doing very well at that. The excessive looting of Duke Ludovico in the area was still effecting the people of Cadier and they kicked me out and a day or two later revolted once again. I went to the capital to recruit a unit to hopefully retake Cadier and to seek the advice of more experienced lords and ladies. I received little to know advice and any questions, request, or any attempt to communicate with the Queen were completely ignored by her majesty. I could not find a new liege as Duke Diodorus had replaced my estate there during my stint as countess. I waited and waited, finally deciding that Pian en Luries was not a realm that I could live in. I started moving to the east with plans of moving north. With all the issues of looting in the past under the banner of Pian en Luries I decided that I would offer a 1% oath to Verus Luria so that my banner would change and my looting to pay my men would not be under the Pian en Luries banner. Duke Kaennji sent me 200 gold as a good will gesture and I needed to pay my men so I headed to Poryatown to cash the bonds and pay them. even thought about recruiting a few more while I was there.

Well I was attacked by the General as I turned my men toward Poryatown. I needed to get to Poryatown even more then to have enough men to fend off the monsters I knew I would come across. From there I was hunted constantly and ended up getting appointed the the positions I hold now. I immediately sought a peaceful resolution and have failed there as well. Even offering up myself willingly in return for allowing those under my command to go free has been rejected by the blood lust of the General and the Queen.

Queen Alanna's Response
June 17th Macal
Our noble Queen has most graciously offered her response to rumours of a peace deal.

"Any peace treaty must be based upon a mutual benefit to both sides.

"In this instance, there is, so far as I can see, little benefit to either side.

"On our side, reclaiming the city will be a trivial matter, militarily speaking. They have essentially no military force, and cannot resist us in any effective way. Thus, there is no benefit to our signing a peace treaty.

"On their side, according to "Duchess" Katayanna, all they wish to do is peacefully travel to the north. Well, why do they not simply do this, then? There is no need for a peace treaty when they could be hundreds of leagues away before we are ready to pursue them.;

"And finally, why should we offer peace to traitors? The ersatz Duchess has claimed to have been swept along in the secession, but she, unlike most of the others who owe loyalty to Verus Luria, deliberately chose to throw her lot in with them. She is nothing but a traitor, and I see no reason to treat with her at all."

Duke Diodorus' Explanation
June 17th Macal
The Duke of Giask offers us his well considered view of the matter at hand.

"It is, as you might expect, a more complex matter than simple warmongering. The terms for the return of Poryatown (if it is even possible) required allowing them to march their (hostile) troops through our lands so they could go and set up their little group of rebels in lands that we have claimed but not yet taken, to the north.

"I have spoken to Lady Katayanna on the issue, but as yet await her own response to what limited counter offers we might be willing to make (such as not punishing their treachery but allowing them to leave without further persecution). Honestly though, to support the ripping away the founding city of Pian en Luries and then expect to be able to make peace deals when the rightful owners come knocking is an idea that is in any case, frankly, daft."
