The sea sprayed against her auburn hair, twirling around messily behind her. She was a pretty girl, though not necessarily beautiful, but the fires of youth had not been lost on her. Maria had always loved the sea, and all that came with it- the crashing waves, and the smell of salt and fish. Her fondest memories were of walking down to the seaside to buy fish from the smallfolk of Pian... Though she was probably not to experience that again. She was not likely to return to Dwilight, especially after her brother had made so many enemies for her house.

The Rosevine was a beautiful ship, her mast tall and proud, her oaken hull glistening with seawater. Her father, James, had been quite pleased when Jeffrey had it built. Two flags flew above it; the golden sun and stars of Pian En Luries, and below it, the crest of her house. When she had been younger, the central roaring tiger had frightened her, though now she pitied it. It looked scared and afraid, roaring out of frustration like a wounded animal, not the proud beast she had once seen it as. It looked like Jeffrey.

She tried her best to put him out of her mind, but usually failed. Her brother was a fool, she knew that, and if he refused to save himself, to flee, it was his fault that he was soon to die. That did little to assuage her fears, though. He had explained his decisions for hours on end, that he couldn't disgrace the family through cowardness, that the civil war was on his head, at least in part. She had never agreed, had argued and shouted with him for hours, though he had only grown sullen and called her a child. When the southron armies appeared over the horizon, and it was time for her to flee, she had even neglected to say goodbye, or even pen him a letter. She doubted that she would ever have that chance again; if he was not dead already, he would be soon.

Lost in her melancholy, she did not notice that the flagship was docking until her scribe prodded her on the shoulder. She shook her hands and puffed out her cheeks, then laid her first foot on the Far East.
