"You just have to walk 2 hours to the north to reach the great city of Perdan, Sir. If you want to go to Partora you have to head south west from here and it will take 3 hours."

The horseman pointed north with his right and south east with his left. Hernfelk could barely see anything but endless plains from both directions however.

"That doesn't make sense. Partora is 50 miles away and Perdan is 48 miles away. How does riding 2 more miles take another hour?"

"I do not know, Sir. It is how things work. Someone told me there are more curves within that 2 miles than any other place on this continent. My friend Ronald said there is a maze somewhere down the road but I haven't see that. Alright then, I am leaving."

As the horseman was about whip his horses, Hernfelk stopped him by grabbing the horseman's whip.

"Wait, wait! I have another question."

"What is it, Sir? I really have to go. If I do not work, I won't be able to feed my kids and my foxy wife is going to nag me for a whole week."

"Why did you drop me here? Why didn't you drop me in the city?"

"Because your cousin told me to drop you off few hours away from the city."

"Why?"

"I do not know. You should ask your cousin, Sir. You have 12 men with you. What are you afraid of. Anyway I am leaving. Good luck with finding a liege, Sir."

The horseman whipped his horses and drove the carriage away from Hernfelk and his men quickly.

"Damn peasant and curse Zakilevo. That bastard. I should have trusted him in the first place. I shouldn't have told him about my horrible sense of direction... Alright we will go to Perdan first. To the north!"

With an encouraging shout, Hernfelk rode towards Perdan. Although he was heading south.

"A letter from General Atanamir? Give me that. Okay..Sir Hernfelk, while Perdan is the name of our realm... So I should head towards Partora?"

"Yes, Sir."

"Alright then. Men! we are going to Partora! turn around!"

Hernfelk's men turned around and began to head towards north. The messenger soon realized Hernfelk was heading towards Perdan but he felt too lazy to chase down Hernfelk to tell him that.

"Oh well. I hope he will find his way soon.

Hernfelk - "Finally, I have arrived in Partora. This is Partora isn't it?"

Gate Keeper - "Who might you be Sir? I have never seen you before?"

Hernfelk - "I am Hernfelk Lapallanch. I am the new knight of Lorient. I have come here to prepare myself to join with the main army."

Gate Keeper - "Ah. Welcome to the heart of Perdan, Sir Hernfelk. Do you see the ducal keep? yes, the tall castle up on the hill. Just head towards there. You should find plenty of fresh recruits gathered from all over Perdan. Though I doubt many will follow someone who has just arrived. Until you learn how to lead your men better, you will only be able to convince one or two soldiers but you can only recruit 5 men at a time."

Hernfelk - "Huh. I guess I will have to fight with what I have for now. Alright then, I will be waiting in a nearby inn for now. Send a letter to my liege. Ask him if I can be assigned to an army. I am ready for some action."

After 2 hours of riding north, Hernfelk could finally see the outskirts of Partora. The city was bigger than anything he has seen before.

"Wow. I never expected Partora to be so big. I thought Partora had less than 40 000 people. That city looks like it can hold at least 100 000 people."

"Uhh Sir? look at that milestone. We are near Perdan, not Partora."

One of Hernfelk's men pointed a nearby milestone with his finger.

"What?"

Hernfelk eyes followed the finger to find the milestone.

-Perdan 3 miles->

"That horseman lied! That bastard. He told me I needed to go south west to reach Partora! Arghaaaaa!... At least now I know we were heading north. Sigh. Turn around we are going back to where we were. From there we will head south west."

Soldier-"Sir, You have been assigned to The Perdan's Royal Lions."

Hernfelk-"Excellent. What is the standing order?"

Soldier-"Get a week's pay and return to the field, Sir. Also send a letter to Marshal Damayan Laegan before you head out."

Hernfelk-"Alright. While I send a report to our good marshal, get the men prepared. We are going through Eldorel."

Soldier-"Uh. Why mountains Sir? We can just go around."

Hernfelk-"To train you idiots of course. Go now. Get them ready for mountain claiming."

Hernfelk-"Nick. How far are we from the estate of Baroness?"

Nick-"We still have walk for an hour at least, Sir. Are you tired already?"

Hernfelk-"Uh, no. Not at all. I am just worried (gasp) about the men (gasp). We can't spend a night (gasp) out here. The road is just too narrow."

Nick-"Sir. I think it was a mistake for us to try and go through the mountains of Eldoret. We are cavalries not rangers. We can still go back to Partora and go a-"

Hernfelk-"What is wrong with you, Nick. I said we are going through the mountains. I do not go back on my words. Men! March forward!"

Nick-"There, Sir, look! Spires!"

Hernfelk-"Spires?"

As Hernfelk lifted his head up to see where Nick was pointing, he could see tall spires of the Dark House between trees.

Hernfelk-"Dear gods! We are almost there! If we arrive within an hour, I will buy drinks for all of you!"

Nick-"Wow, Sir! You are done being stingy?"

Hernfelk-"What did you just say?"

Chapter 1.8

Hernfelk and his men entered the Dark House through a thick wooden gate - it was the only pathway to the estate. Hernfelk promised himself he would never dare to go through the mountains of Eldoret unless he was told to by his superiors.

Hernfelk-"Finally. I can use some ale to warm myself up. Maybe some wenches too. Right, Nick?"

Nick-"Sir, you can't afford both with what you have. If you spend all your gold, I doubt your cousin will send you more."

Hernfelk-"Here I thought I was stingy. No worries, Nick. I have a brother remember? I am sure he can spare some gold for his younger brother."

Nick-"Your brother's realm has just lost a war remember Sir? He won't send you a single coin."

Hernfelk-"They can both go to hell then. I am sure Baroness Blythe is a generous lady who will spare some coins for a poor knight. To the inn!"

Nick-"Wait Sir, Someone is walking towards us."

Hernfelk's eyes rolled around with impatience. He was tired from walking on the rough mountain road of Eldoret for hours. He was barely holding himself from falling on the ground. When Hernfelk finally managed to get a hold of himself, he could see a well built man in front of him.

Hernfelk-"Who are you and what do you want from me? You better talk fast because I am about t-"

The man quickly intervened Hernfelk and asked him if he was the men leading the men behind him.

Hernfelk-"Yes. I am the knight leading these men. I am Hernfelk Lapallanch of Laprient."

Nick-"It is Lorient, Sir, Lorient."

Hernfelk-"Damn it Nick! I wasn't talking to you. Ahem. Uh who might you be."

The man introduced himself as Captain Tilmann, sent by Duke Nicoli of Perdan.

Hernfelk-"What? You are one of Duke Nicoli's men? And he wants me to join him in the tavern he is staying. Give me a moment. I need to discuss with my men quickly."

Hernfelk turned and put his arm around Nick's neck, pulling him closer.

Hernfelk-"(Whisper) Nick. What is going on here? Why would Duke Nicali-"

Nick-"(Whisper) Nicoli. It is Nicoli, Sir."

Hernfelk-"Damn it that is not what is important he- Ahem (whisper again) Never mind that. So what should I do?"

Nick-"(Whipser) What do you mean, Sir? You don't have a choice. You are just a knight and he is a duke. Of course you will join him."

Hernfelk turned around with a stiffed smile.

Hernfelk-"I will gladly join Duke Nicoli. It will be an honour to see someone like him in person. Lead the way Captain."

Before Hernfelk entered the tavern with Captain Tilmann, Nick whispered quickly.

Nick-"(Whisper) Put on your good knight face on Sir. Do not act like you always do."

Hernfelk grinned at Nick trying to comfort him(or Hernfelk himself). Captain Tilmann quietly led Hernfelk to Duke Nicoli. Duke Nicoli was an old man but wasn't fat like other old nobles in their twilight years. He wasn't as built as Captain Tilmann, probably because of his age, but he looked solid enough to be able to fight in the front lines.

Nicoli-"Have a seat Sir Hernfelk. I have some very good ale here to share and this place has a fine stew bubbling away on the fire in the kitchen. Please join me for a little conversation, would you?"

Hernfelk-"Th-Thank you, Sire. It is an honour to meet you in person."

Hernfelk could feel his back being slowly covered with cold sweat. His head felt heavy from being overworked. As he sat on his chair, he took a couple sips of the ale.

Hernfelk-"Y-Yes, Sire. I still haven't met my liege in person so I am thinking of seeing him once I return from the campaign. I marched up the mountains as soon as I hired another horseman in Partora."

Hernfelk tried to relax his facial muscles to put his good knight face on. Sadly, it did not work well. When he finally managed to smile, his left cheek began to twitch. Thankfully, Amanda brought the stews just in time. He quickly put his face down and ate his stew.

When Duke Nicoli left the table with Captain Tilmann, Hernfelk let out a long sigh. He asked Amanda to bring the cask and stew to his men. As he walked out of the tavern to breath some fresh air, Nick approached him with a smile on his face.

Nick-"Well done Sir. You looked like an idiot but at least you looked normal."

Hernfelk-"Nick. If you don't watch your mouth-"

Nick-"Oh look, Sir. Look at the sky. The blood stars. You can still see them here."

Hernfelk-"Where? Huh. You are right."

Nick-"Well at least you won't get homesick."

Hernfelk-"Why would I get homesick? I never liked growing up in Dwilight anyway. That Astroist fanatic Kihalin tried to feed me to monsters."

Nick-"I am sure he tried to teach you how to use a sword."

Hernfelk-"Yeah right. Oh by the way Nick. Did I tell you Duke Nicoli gave me some food and ale?"

Nick-"Did he? But you didn't bring any with you Sir."

Hernfelk-"Because I told a tavern woman called Amanda to bring them to the men. You won't get anything from me."

Nick quickly entered the tavern. After a few seconds, Hernfelk could hear Nick's scream of agony and despair.

After resting in a nearby inn, Hernfelk and his men continued their march towards the city of Ibladesh. Hours later, they have finally reached the southern edge of the mountains of Eldorel.

Hernfelk-"I can hardly believe we are out of the mountains."

Nick-"Ha ha. You must be happy, Sir. Thank goodness there was only one path from the Dark House to Castle Ubent."

Hernfelk-"No kidding Nick. We wouldn't be here if there were more than one path in that confusing mountains. Now, let's forget about the mountains and enjoy our ride to the castle. I think our horses are getting fat from not running enough."

Nick-"I doubt horses can get so fast Sir. It has only been a day since we stopped riding them."

Hernfelk-"Damn it Nick. Do you always have to kick in and say something boring and obvious? This is why I alway-"

Nick-"Look Sir! there are pretty-"

Hernfelk-"Where?! ladies are in danger?"

Nick-"flowers Sir."

Hernfelk-"Nick. I swear I will-"

Nick-"Men! Move faster! To Castle Ubent!"

After an hour of marching, Hernfelk and his men arrived near Castle Ubent. The castle was nothing more than a shadow of its former glory. Wooden walls were built between gaps of the stone walls to prevent enemies from entering the castle.

Hernfelk-"So that is Castle Ubent. Why are the walls so low? Isn't it a stronghold?"

Nick-"It is. I think the walls didn't survive the Perdan-Caligus/Ibladesh war."

Hernfelk-"Are you sure about that?"

Nick-"Sir. I came here with you from Dwilight. Don't ask me questions about Perdan. You know as much as I know."

Hernfelk-"Damn it Nick. That is not how you suppose to talk to your-"

Nick-"Sir, are we going to take the route leading to Moyale or to Ar Mosul? If you want we can go to Moyale and tried to march over mountains again."

Hernfelk-"I think you guys are hardened enough. After hammering a weapon, you need to cool it off."

Nick-"Whatever you say Sir. Men! To Ar Mosul!"

Hernfelk-"Damn it Nick. I am the leader here!"

Hernfelk met a messenger just before leaving the castle.

Nick-"Sir. We have to go over mountains again."

Hernfelk-"This can't be true... We... we just marched over mountains! Why? Why can't we go through Ar Mosul?"

Nick-"Because there are undead creatures there Sir. We do not have enough men to defeat those walking deads."

Hernfelk-"Nick. Have you forgotten the days we spent on Dwilight? We survived through that hell! I know we can crush those undeads! I do not go back on my words! I said we are going through Ar Mosul and we are going to do it! Men, Marc-Hey! What the hell is this!"

Nick gave a hand sign to his men. As soon as he gave the sign, men quickly grabbed Hernfelk.

Nick-"Men, tie him up. General Atanamir does not want us to go through Ar Mosul and we will follow the order."

Hernfelk-"Nick you traitor! This is outrageous! Damn it. You are my men not his!"

Nick-"Sir, you won't gain anything but infamy by disobeying the order. Men keep him shut will you?"

Nick-"Untie him. Yeah. I think we are fine now."

Two men untied the knight they serve quickly. As soon as Hernfelk was untied, Nick ordered everyone to continue with the march.

Hernfelk-"I can't believe you bastards rebelled-"

Nick-"Sir, I can't believe you can still talk despite being tied on a horse for so long. You have my respect on that. Now you have to go through those mountains to reach the great city of Ibladesh."

Hernfelk-"We could have stayed in Moyale for a day too. Now we have no choice but to sleep in the mountains again."

Nick-"Think of it this way, Sir. When you become an old man and ask a poet to write your epic, you can tell the man that you marched over the mountains to strike the heart of Ibladesh. It sounds better than marching over plains and ramming the gate of the city."

Hernfelk-"Yes~. I see. That will make a fine chapter of my epic. A wonderful idea, Nick. This is why I keep you around. I will make sure your name will appear somewhere in my epic along with my beautiful steed-"

Nick-"Yes, yes. I am honoured by your words, Sir. Can we go now?"

After hours of marching up the mountains or Ar Raqqah, Hernfelk and his men decided to take a break. Nick ordered the men to make some fire.

Hernfelk-"What's for lunch?"

Nick-"two strips of bacon and half of this black grain bread, Sir."

Hernfelk-"Are you kidding me? We've been eating the same crap for the past three days!"

Nick-"Not really Sir. We had some good stew and ale just half a day ago."

Hernfelk-"Well except for that! Do we not have anything other than bacon and bread?"

Nick-"We can make some porridge if you want."

Hernfelk-"Why don't we hunt and get a decent meal out of that?"

Nick-"Cause we don't even know where we are at the moment, Sir. If we don't find our way out of this mountains, we will run out of food. We don't have time to chase animals"

Hernfelk-"That is a fallacy, Nick. If we manage to hunt a boar down, we will get enough meat out for us to last at least three days."

Nick-"Oh, lunch is ready. Did you say you are tired of bacon, Sir?"

Hernfelk-"Uh-"

Nick-"No worries. I will eat it for you."

Hernfelk-"Wait! I never said that!"

The sun was setting between the peaks of the mountains of Ar Mosul as Hernfelk and his men were slowly marching upwards. The mountain paths were almost erased so Nick had to send some men ahead in order to find a way out of the mountains.

Nick-"Sir, we should try and find a cave to spend a night in. The sun sets faster in the mountains and it will get dark quite quickly."

Hernfelk-"Send some men to find a cave then. It would be horrible if we have to sleep out in the open."

Nick-"You three, go ahead of the group and try to find a cave or somewhere we can rest."

Three men nodded and walked along the path quickly. The men came back as the sun hid itself from the sky.

Nick-"Sir, our men didn't find a cave but found a small lake ahead. We just have to walk for half an hour."

Hernfelk-"Lake? Perfect. I could use some water to wash myself."

It was early in the morning when Nick woke Hernfelk up.

Nick-"Sir, it is time to get up. We should move while the sun is up."

Hernfelk-"Urgh~! Just a couple more minutes..."

Nick had to shake Hernfelk a minute straight. When Hernfelk came out from his tent, the campsite was surrounded by the thick fog. Nick went around every tent to wake everyone up. After ten minutes of struggle, everyone except one soldier came out from their tents.

Nick-"Sir, one of our men has fallen ill from lack of food."

Hernfelk-"What are you talking about Nick? We fed everyone yesterday. Which idiot didn't eat his bloody bread and bacon? I will give him a good smack in the head."

Nick-"Sir, eh- it is nothing severe. He can still walk. He just need to take it easy for a day or two."

Hernfelk-"Damn it. I should have hired a healer before I left the city. Why didn't I do that?"

Nick-"Thinking about your past mistake will get you nowhere, Sir. I will order the men to prepare some food. Why don't you go wash your face or something?"

Hernfelk-"Do we have any warm water? I really don't feel like washing my face with freezing lake water."

Nick shook his head sideways as the sick soldier drew his last breath.

Soldier-"Fo-...Food... Ugh-"

Nick-"...Sir, he is dead."

Hernfelk-"Really? After eating all that food he still died? Sigh."

Nick-"You two, dig up the ground so we can bury this man."

Two men nodded and grabbed shovels from their horses.

Hernfelk-"Losing my first man to hunger. This is an embarrassment."

Nick-"Well, Sir. We should bring a healer next time around."

After burying the dead soldier, Hernfelk and his men moved on. They walked for four hours without stopping anywhere. Hernfelk, who usually complain a lot, did not say a word and that made Nick worried about his master.

Nick-"Sir, should we eat here? I think it is a good place to have our lunch."

Hernfelk nodded slowly while looking forward. Nick began to order the men to prepare some food. When Hernfelk saw his men grabbing breads and strips of bacon, he suddenly felt a certain urge to stop his men.

Hernfelk-"Wait. Don't eat your food yet. Maybe we should change what we eat today. Make some stew Nick."

Nick-"Sir? Uh-Okay."

Nick ordered the men to make a small campfire for him to make stew. The stew was made rather quickly. The taste of the stew wasn't exactly the best thing in the world, but it was more pleasant than eating strips of bacon and black grain breads.

Hernfelk and his men were only an hour away from the great city of Ibladesh. Hernfelk heard of the city many times before he even came to this continent. The white city, the greatest and wealthiest city on the East Continent... But when he and his men arrived at the outskirt of the city, they saw nothing but burned houses and dead bodies.

Hernfelk-"Dear gods! What happened here?"

Nick-"Sir, Perdan and Caligus looted the city for months. Of course there is nothing left of the city."

Hernfelk-"I never expected things to go so far. I thought I would get to fight at least."

Nick-"Ibladesh is dead, Sir. We are just hunting the shadow of the theocracy."

Hernfelk-"Hmm. Come to think of it, I never got to ask why we went to war with Ibladesh in the first place. Once I arrive in the city, I will send a letter to someone who knows things in details. March on, men. We are almost there."

Chapter 3.2

When Hernfelk and his men arrived near the eastern gate of the city - or the place where the gate used be, he could the spires of the ducal palace. Only two spires were still intact while the rest lost the upper portions. Through the missing portions of the spires, black columns of smoke were stretching towards the sky. The city was filled with screams and cries of once the proud citizens of the mighty theocracy. While walking towards the ducal palace, Hernfelk saw soldiers beating down people. Some were busy dragging women to somewhere.

Hernfelk-"This is horrible, Nick. I never understood hell on earth but now I can understand what that phrase meant."

Nick-"Sir, you will have to get used to this sight. You will be seeing a lot from now on. Think of it this way, Sir. If Perdan and Caligus did not win the war, they would have been the ones suffering."

There weren't many buildings still standing in the city except the ducal palace and a huge temple built in the middle of the whole city. The temple was bigger than any other temple Hernfelk has seen so far. Bigger than the ducal palace itself in terms of size. Only reason the ducal palace looked bigger was because it was built on a hill while the temple was built on an even levelled ground.

Hernfelk-"That is the great church of Ibladesh? I am surprised it is still standing."

Nick-"The army was probably too busy looting the city, Sir. Do you want to take a look inside?"

Hernfelk-"Let's do that. Hope it is magnificent enough to make me forget about the view around here."
