Ulyssa and the Gorgonauts

Ulyssa's Gorgonauts, led by their Captain

Ulyssa hails from an obscure branch of the Ishida people who, ages ago, settled in a faraway land called Graece. Like most Graek nobles, Ulyssa was raised with the expectation that one had to make a lasting name for themselves through glorious and heroic deeds.

For Ulyssa that translated to taking her ship (the Gorgon) and her warriors (the Gorgonauts) on a world-spanning odyssey. Unfortunately, poor fortune left them rather shipwrecked on the South Island. Not that Ulyssa really minds. The Island is seething with war, and battlefield renown is pretty much every Graek's dream come true.

Graek warfare is an ancient practice and quite outdated by the standards of most realms. A warrior is known as a hoplite, usually armed with a spear, hoplon shield, xiphos short sword, and bronze or stiffened linen body armour along with a face-enclosing corinthian bronze helmet.

The hoplon is perhaps the most important part of the warrior's equipment, as hoplite warfare primarily involves the men forming a tight shield-wall known as the phalanx. One-on-one duels between great warriors are not unheard of, but most Graeks these days prefer to value formation discipline and teamwork, since it makes rather more sense than foolishly walking out there to challenge the enemy alone.

While the Gorgonauts are somewhat handicapped by their bronze armour (as opposed to iron or steel), Ulyssa knows that as long as her men can maintain the formidable phalanx, there is little to fear when the frontlines clash.
