Demotion, or Count's Collapse

Herein is contained the story of the Abandonment of the loyal region Wailing Wood from the realm Thalmarkin, and ensuing demotion and depression of former Count Elios Everlight. The fallout from this event is still in progress...

(Personal Letter to Elios Everlight)
My friend... The time has come. I must abandon Wailing Wood. However, if you are within reach of the region now, I can allow you to do it if you wish. Let me know, Lord Elios. We will find you a worthy region in the future.

(Message Sent to All Nobles in Thalmarkin)
Hopefully this is the last of this ugly business...

Today we will say goodbye to Wailing Wood...a region that helped give me my reputation as a fighter. And more importantly, the region has been a longtime holding of ours, and its people frequent Unger. I've been assured they still will, despite our governance issues. And should we one day be able to expand again, the Wood will be ours again.

Lord Elois, and all who held her before - excellent work, truly.

Lady Baelunìataisharà Blue

Marshal of the Northern Fury

(Letter sent to All Nobles in Thalmarkin)
Queen Baelunìataisharà,

I must protest the idea of the removal of Thalmarkin's banners from the faithful Wailing Wood.

Wailing Wood is one of the historic regions of old Thalmarkin, bordering our ancient capital and protecting her from the wild hordes. Its people are devout and true Kin, and have been for centuries. This move will abandon our heritage, Majesty, and leave one of our great cities bald against the wildlands.

What is it that drives you to this careless and disrespectful decision? Surely the Wood is not a burden on our realm, so loyal as she is.

For the True North,

Elios Everlight
Count of Wailing Wood

Not a burden, Count Elios. Never that. I remember well the Wood, and all the history there.

What it comes down to, unfortunately, is income and agriculture, against governance of the realm as a whole. We must, it seems, remove our banners from one region, else we will lose control of another territory, and we know not which.

We mean no disrespect, you can be assured of that, Count Elios. Nor do we act in haste.

Duke Do'Urden voiced the same concern, regarding a buffer for Unger. In truth, the decision was exceedingly difficult, and I'm still not happy with it. The other choice was Lastfell, which produces double the gold and food, can hold a fortification, and also borders Unger. The Wood does as well, but lacking these other advantages I had to make the hard call.

This was a logistics call, and while my heart is broken at the idea of abandoning any region, a decision had to be made.

Once more, it is with a heavy heart that we take our banners from Wailing Wood.

Lord Elios, I myself apologize for what can only feel like a wound most grievous to you. And it is, to us all.

I told Duke Do'Urden what I'll tell everyone now - when we goin more nobles, as we always do, we will retake these regions. I will not let bastions of Thalmarkin history fall to wilds indefinitely.

"Blast it, he's delusional!"

"Mind yer voice, Gunther. Count may be off his rocker but he's nae deaf."

"You sure of that? He heard the Queen say Thalmarkin no longer considers this infested Wood to be part of the Realm. The healers telling him we ought to head for the city to get proper fixed. And yet here we stand, riding to defend a land of no country, abandoned to rogues yet we're still dying for it!" the man's voice choked. He lay on a saddle blanket draped over a haybale, in the paddocks out behind the Manor.

"Aye, he's a babe in the ways of the world. Ma Bae just took away his fort, an' he's sulking for it." The older woman picked at her bandaged shoulder with a faraway look, leaning against the flank of her chestnut charger. "Must be nice t'be nobility eh? Toss lives wherever ye might, on a whim. I'm just glad the horses all made it through aright."

"You're right there, Maura. Small mercies."

Elios glared back at the parchment. His eyes were sunken and edged in red just like the offending page. The inn room was dim as none of the candles were lit; he sat alone in the only patch of grey overcast light struggling in through the half-open window. He sneered to himself and addressed the paper in a rough low growl.

"Vossezzdor?! Thalmarkin, Pride of the North, relaxing on the sunny beaches of the southern Lake Salaman? Well that will lose our reputation. Humph. Abandon the north, it's too difficult, cozy up to the bizarre neighbours down south and forget about our people, the ones who have been true Kin and citizens for centuries."

He huffed angrily and scrubbed the back of one hand across his eyes. The former Count continued talking, forehead resting on the back of his hand and elbow propped on the desk.

"The Queen of Vagueness. Empty apologies. The first damned words that woman spoke to me were saying how sorry she was to abandon one of the oldest and best-maintained regions of Thalmarkin. How dare she. Such greed. Laziness and carelessness. When did she ever tour, except to collect the damn banners. Some monarch. It would have been different if Aeravon had the crown..."

His voice caught and he growled through the sadness that thought spawned. His closest friend in the nobility, who had abandoned their home to go live in Ar Agyr without a word.

"Maybe he was right... this place is going to the dogs! Our reputation ruined..."

Elios stood abruptly, the wood chair toppled to the floor. He stood and stared unfocused out the window toward the overcast sky over Unger. What have I done to deserve this dishonor?

He stood that way for many minutes, a statue with fists clenched, unmoving. He shook his head and looked back to the desk where a short missive sat, read and awaiting response. Elios took a long breath and let it out slowly in a hiss, then sat to respond.

Report from Elios Everlight (Personal message to Dancer Rea) - 2020-09-25 00:31:00

Duke Dancer,

If I may be frank, you Sir are one of the very few peers in this realm I have found to have shown any respect or honour for your countrymen of the north. Being unlanded and demoted is not a situation I had thought ever to find myself in, it is insulting, and I hope it will not last long. However, Kin I am and wish to remain, and I shall not tithe my service to those who are careless and disrespectful with those under them.

In short: I appreciate and wish to accept your offer of fealty in the mountains, until such time as the opportunity to once again ascend presents itself.

Signed,

Elios Everlight
Noble of Thalmarkin

Letter from Dancer Rea (Personal message to Elios Everlight) - 2020-09-25 01:28:17

It will be my pleasure to have you, Count. I have just called for my ship to land, so it will be some days before I return to the realm. However, I have no doubt that my men in the mountains would be happy to make you comfortable in the meantime.

I would like you to know, I ask three things from all my knights. That you do not Lie to me, that you treat your fellow knights as if they were your blood Brothers, and that you serve the realm in some meaningful capacity. Is that amiable to you?
