Basic Combat Tactics and Unit Settings.

Using the menu to the left of your screen, you can hit 'orders' and then you can hit the link for 'line settings' to set your settings up for the next battle you are in. In battle against monsters or other realms, you will often be given orders from our High General of War. A lot of these orders have to do with moving your men, digging in or looting, but many of them also have to do with the important concept of “line settings”.

There are three types of settings to observe (line, behavior and formation), and using them correctly can mean the difference between victory or destruction of your unit. It is wise to obey your General or Marshal’s orders on settings. Disobeying the Head of War, or breaching the Chain of Command, is a good way to end up at the bottom of the Volcano. The following is a description of the settings open to you.

Line

Front, middle, Back This is where your men will stand on the battlefield. The General has put much thought into a plan of movement and will issue orders for where you are to be on the field. Its that easy.

Behavior

  • Murderous: will get your men pissed off and ready to kill almost anything that moves. They will attack even allies and will be bloodthirsty madmen. This is not a good way to control your Dogs. A true Darkan is sharp and in control of his anger, using it to kill all forms of life in his way.
  • Aggressive: Wild and fiercely attacking, ignoring line settings and going mad. This is also a form of chaos not normally wanted in war. It can result in hurting friendly targets and in getting your men killed by having them run blindly into battle. This setting is rare to be seen given as a proper order.
  • Normal: they behave and do as told. Your men will obey line settings, attack only who ordered to attack, and not lose proper footing due to heroic or stupid hurtling towards the enemy. This setting is usually good for most occasions of war.
  • Defensive: This will keep your men back and in a defending maneuver. They will not move at all, holding their ground unless they flee from battle.
  • Evasive: Your unit attempts to pass unseen. Even in battle they only hit quickly and attempt to flee. This setting works best with ten or less men.

Formation

In battle your men will take formations as they fight. These formations are limited to the following options “Line, Box, Wedge, and Skirmish”. Each one is easy to picture, but for sake of being clear they are as follows.

  • Line: A human fence, each man standing shoulder to shoulder in a line.
  • Box: All men go back to back with their weapons pointing out in all directions, making a box shape where they only have to protect their fronts and not worry about attacks from behind.
  • Wedge: Shaped like a “V” the unit can hack into the enemy’s frontlines like an ax blade. Its very effective for Calvary units in breaking front lines.
  • Skirmish: Vulture-like small bands of men sent out in roving packs to locate and kill units already suffering damage. This type of tactic is very useful when battling wounded forces.
