A Peaceful Visit

“Sir, present your books please.” States the surly librarian as Vlad and Aila entered Kalmar.

“What?” Says Vald, a bit confused.

“It’s for the great library of Alexandria,” Aila says as she places her books down for review, “it is the foremost library in all the land.”

The librarian’s eyes sparkle as he sees a copy of The Finer Points of Perdanian Pedantics, “Might we make a copy duchess? He asks almost pleading.

“Yes.” Aila replies with a knowing, tight lipped smile.

Handing back all of Vlad’s books, the Librarian’s thinly veiled contempt for Vlad's books plainly shows, “You may proceed.”

Kalamar felt very different to Vlad, perhaps it was the smells of unknown seafood and hot springs, the volcano that shaped the landscape, or the great shadow of the Spire of the Bewitching Siren… Whatever it was, Vlad liked it, it made him feel more alive and excited. Taking a deep breath he asks, “Duchess Aila, where are we to begin?”

She has been here before, sifted through rubble on the old coastline before, chased through the streets by a mob here before, but it is hard to think of those things now. Beside her Vladimir looked around with wild curiosity- while she wanted to have a bath, sit and rest but he wanted to run forward to see as much as he could. Dusting her sleeves peevishly Aila agrees with a small nod agrees to go forth and explore some of the strange things in the strange city. It had come together nicely after the disaster that reshaped the land, and only she could only see the evidence of the day the whole earth shook when she truly looked for it. "We should let the guards rest and find something to eat. Kalmar has very strange foods." She explains, offering her arm in a bossy demand for decorum as they walk together through a busy street. "And there is nothing better than a hot spring on a full belly" She expressed with a tone in an accent so snooty it is difficult to tell if she is joking.

While finding her way back to a small establishment someone had brought her to long ago, she assures him "The Tidespeaker has been notified of our arrival, the guards are watching, and between you and I my scouts haven't seen Navaar or his retinue in the region at all today...So we have the evening to relax."

Aila stands by expectantly waiting for her knight open the door to a small, but very nice looking tavern. They are greeted with a loud shout of welcoming voices, as two unknown travelers none of them know that they are in the presence of a Viceroy. Aila orders a man behind the counter without being asked, and tells him "Two of the fishy, plates" expecting him to know what she meant and taking a seat she was not offered. "And wine" she adds, though a woman is already behind her pouring. They had worked in the business of feeding nobles too long not to recognize a Duchess when they saw one.

Although he could tell the high quality of the fish, Vlad simply doesn't like it, not a bit. But doing his best to hide the fact, he washes it down with some fabulous wine and asks, "Duchess, we have yet to announce are arrival to the Tidemaster... ought we to get our scribes to send a letter?"

Through dainty bites of strange cuisine, Aila is interrupted from her thoughts of summers long ago by Vlad's question. "Listen closer, knight. You are with a very famous and successful Lady you do not want to miss anything."

Aila pauses to drink from her own wine "I already told you I wrote the Tide master. We just have to relax until he summons us."

An awaiting summons taunted him from his desk. Cayden was a man pulled in many directions. As strain hit Alexandria, he rarely had the time to act as leader of his faith with more and more duties assigned to him. As such, when he was told the ambassadors of Eponllyn had arrived, under the guise of preparation, he had the messenger wait. Clear thoughts were needed, and the distractions were endless it seemed. Not enough nobles. Not enough food. Build a statue. Casting aside his worries, Cayden meditated, imagining each problem burn away under a red flame until he was satisfied his mind was at ease.

Now it was time to summon them. Dispatching the messenger, he made his way to their meeting place.

The Tidemaster's throne room was far from modest, given his predecessors. The throne, an ornate chair, sat on a plush red carpet that. Stepping back, the red carpet was designed to be the tongue of a great, coral blue sea serpent that appeared mid strike around the ruler. Continuing the sea motif, murals of waves and artwork depicting the ocean lined the hall until the art made land fall, culminating in mountainous views of the great volcano. Cayden dressed, not as a priest, but as the ruler, in dark greys accented with a hint of blue and black, the Navaar family colors. Beside him on the throne were a pair of weapons in easy reach. Cayden's favored great axe rested on one side, and on the other was a black sword, the Cursed Nightblade of Oligarch, perhaps an omen of the coming days.

Aila Storme,

Chief of Justice of Eponllyn,

Duchess of Northern Eponllyn,

Margravine of Troyes,

I welcome you to Alexandria, though I wish the circumstances were better. You and your knight are more than welcome in the palace at this time. From there, we can sample whatever delicacies you and yours are interested in. I'll have a menu of our specialties delivered when you arrive, and I'll plan a small feast around your choices.

It has been too long since we last saw each other. I hope the travel wasn't too burdensome.

It had been a day since Aila and her knight companion had arrived in the City, some food, drinks, and exploring had left them refreshed on this second day in the City, and ready to meet the Ruler of Alexandria. When they arrived Aila realized this throne room was a place finally new to her, splashed with decadence that she could appreciate, enjoying the tapestries more than most. Her Prophet looked more like a King than a spiritual leader, giant and imposing. With a rack of weapons there to greet her despite the friendly letter he had sent her.

But the Duchess knew she had changed too, had been dealing with intimidating men since she was nineteen years old, and hardly flinched at the sight that made her both sad, and inspired. Well practiced in manners and experienced in diplomacy her curtsey and greeting in an unchanged Perdanese accent are nothing short of flawless. Gems on a dozen pins securing braids into an elaborate hairstyle glitter in the lamplight as she and Vlad bow respectfully "Greetings Tidemaster, thank you for agreeing to meet with us so swiftly. This is Sir Vladimir Von Igelfeld, a Knight of Poiters and my protector for this journey." There is a glint in her eyes as she says this to Cayden, who had known her since twenty. She knew that the Tidemaster knew the opposite was true, that even though she dressed in the finest gowns and jewels she had fought in many battles over the years. She is protecting Vlad.

"We have much to discuss."

Perhaps it was the sea serpent or the not so gentle rebuke from the day before, regardless Vlad was not at ease when entering the throne room… The imposing nature of the Tidemaster and his great axe did little to settle his nerves. Nevertheless, when Aila introduced him, Vlad stepped forward and bowed, “Tidemaster of Alexandria, it is indeed an honour.” Vlad then stepped back, resolving for a time to follow his great uncle's favorite maxim, better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and to remove all doubt.

Sipping from a cup of her favorite tea, Elrysend stood at the window of the inn she was currently staying in, lost in thought. It took a few tries for her scout, Sora, to get her attention, clearing her throat a few times and making general noise until she was noticed.

"Reporting to the Priestess, there are rumors that the Tidemaster is holding an important meeting."

Elrysend hummed noncommittally. There were rumors of that everyday, helped along by false informants who spread mischief just for the fun of it, making her job difficult.

"Several have claimed to see the Duchess Aila Storme and a strange knight wandering the city, and they were last seen headed towards the Tidemaster's throne room."

She choked on her tea, coughing and sputtering as she placed the cup down on a nearby desk. "The Duchess? Here in Kalmar?" Whisking her cloak off the chair behind the desk, Elrysend wasted no time making her way towards the throne room.

While she didn't necessarily need to present herself at the important meeting, she figured it was only polite, and it would give her a chance to have a much needed discussion with the Tidemaster afterwards. Anger was still simmering in her gut from his most recent choice, but she pushed it down, smiling kindly at the guards stationed before the doors.

As her hand rose to knock upon them, Elrysend paused. The last time she had interacted with anyone from Eponllyn, it had not ended well, and she still remembered the pain of the shackles on her broken ankle. Eponllyn's dungeons were definitely not on her vacation list to visit ever again, that was for sure. But there was no reason for her to fear; at most this was a diplomatic mission, and she doubted they would try anything if the Tidemaster trusted them enough to allow them into the heart of Kalmar.

With a knock, Elrysend stepped inside, dressed in the blue robes and dark cloak of a simple priestess. "Forgive my intrusion. May I join you all?"

Anyone who thought that the Tidemaster was intimidating, did not know Cayden Navaar. The man had a knack for a bit of showmanship, something that supposedly ran in his family, and, had he not wanted to waste church resources, the amusement of a gesture of flames was very much still on the table. However, beyond that was a kind heart that had been forced into his current role, and the control he presented was simply the best illusion he could muster for the moment. Had anyone assumed the fiery aura of a man who founded a faith and led a realm couldn't waver, they hadn't met the one force Cayden would relent to.

As he opened his mouth to speak, the knock came, and small woman that swept inside caused a small change, probably only perceptible to the Duchess that had known the Tidemaster for so long. The air seemed to cool in the room, and his gaze softened slightly as he looked at the woman who entered. Was that a hint of relief?

"It has been too long since I've seen that sharp glimmer one only sees in your eyes," he said affectionately towards Aila. Cayden made a gesture, towards Elrysend, not sparing another glance in her direction less he lose the composure he held after she had seemingly avoided him for weeks. "Chief of Justice, this is your Alexandrian counterpart, Arbitrator Elrysend Rotizoi, also a priestess of our faith."

Looking over at Elrysend once more, again briefly, "And Arbitrator, might I introduce you to one of my oldest friends, the lovely lady who never seems to be without a duchy following her every word, Chief of Justice Aila Storme, and of course her knight Sir Vladimir." He kept his eyes on the Duchess. He did know Aila well, and her temper was something else he knew well. He wondered how she would take to the intrusion.

Cayden melts for this newcomer slipping rudely into his Throne Room unannounced, and Aila resists a frown as she refuses to look at the other woman. Cayden has the sense to compliment her keen eyes, capable of freezing men in their tracks at a glance before suggesting they be introduced.

Aila's arms are folded defensively as she turns to face Elrysend Rotizoi, a Priestess, A Judge and physically flinches as Cayden suggests that they are counterparts to each other. "Yes, Duchies and titles trail me like your free spirited council trails you. You will be happy to know I was appointed Viceroy by the very Queen who trusts me to be her voice today. I am afraid your honeyed words -no matter how true- will not make these negotiations easier on you."

She speaks to Cayden but is observing Elrysend the entire time, with the same sharp hazel eyes Cayden had mentioned just before. They are lively and sharp, taking in every detail of the woman even as she goes on, FINALLY addressing the other woman directly "It is good to see ambition and confidence! I would be loathe to be seen in the throne room so ill attired; It takes a truly strong woman to present herself as you do. By putting that aside, I will ask that you join our group at the head table for the feast your Ruler has arranged, my Aide Sir Vladimir would benefit from the vast knowledge such a clearly.... bookish! Woman must have of this fine city. You two will enjoy each others company."

A few tense moments pass after Aila’s words. In an attempt to break the spell, Vlad clears his throat, bows, smiles, and offers his arm to the new arrival, “I will be quite glad of your company Arbitrator. Let me escort you to the feast.” As they find their way to their places, Vlad leans in and whispers, “Don’t let her get to you, the duchess has some sharp corners… but she means well. Tell me, how are things here in Alexandria?”

In the few moments of silence that passed after the Duchess's harsh words, dozens of thoughts fluttered through Elrysend's mind. It appeared that she had been ignored, insulted and complimented all at once by this woman with sharp eyes and an even sharper tongue. Though she was incredibly beautiful in her elegant clothes, Elrysend couldn't help but feel as though she was in the presence of a viper in human skin.

Fortunately for her, the priestess was naturally of a cooler and softer disposition, so she reacted to the Duchess with ease. "Thank you, Duchess," She said with a slight bow of her head. "I pray you will treat us with the same amount of respect in which we treat you."

She couldn't resist the little jibe, however, even as she turned to the knight with a gentle smile. It was entirely unbecoming of the Duchess to insult a member of a realm she was a current guest to, but power was something that often went to people's heads. It was one of the reasons Elrysend dressed as a simple priestess regardless of her rank; it was a reminder to all, including herself, that she would not fall to the same corruption some of Alexandria's former leaders had.

Keeping her attention averted from Cayden, she took Sir Vladimir's arm, keeping step with him as she listened to him whisper. "Don't worry, I can handle some sharp corners," Elrysend whispered back with a small laugh. "Alexandria... has seen better times, but enough about us. Have you enjoyed our capital so far?"

...Some time later, during the feast...

"...and so the debtor said, 'We must keep our agreement: it was settled between us that I was to be your debtor; I should be so no longer if I were to pay you.'" says Vlad chuckling at his own joke, and trying his best to ignore the fervent throat clearings of his nearby scribe.

"Lord Vladimir!" the scribe says quietly but assertively, an act that Vlad simply can't ignore, following the scribe from the table.

"Listen! I am in the middle of a diplomatic dinner! You simply cannot interrupt and I am not a lord, you're creating confusion. Now go!" Says Vlad sharply as he starts return to the table.

"The peasants have revolted and named you the new lord of Kalmar!" yells the scribe a bit louder than intended.

"What!? They can't do that!"

"They did it anyway."

"Hmm..." says Vlad, "I guess that throws a new wrinkle into this visit..."

...And so it begins

Vlad sat still for a moments as the news descended on the room, everyone was whispering, some stormed out, some were starting to look angry, everyone forgot about the dinner. And as whispers started to turn to heated conversations, Vlad stood rapped his hand on the table and gathered the attention of the room.

"Tidemaster, Arbitrator, and all nobility of Alexandria. I had hoped to discuss this over drinks, but alas the world contrives to challenge the best laid plans. It is no secret why we are here, Alexandria has fallen on hard times and it is our desire to see you join the free cities, to fight as one, and bring the hope and promise of the free cities to the volcanic Isles. And now... Decision time has been accelerated, the time is now.

"You know better than any the difficult state of Kalmar, the people proclaim me their Lord today, but tomorrow the winds of change my strike their fancy and Kalmar will then be anothers. So my ask is simple, Kalmar needs you to take up estates in order to calm the populace, keep an eye on them so they don't continue down this trend of creating their own leaders. It was not in my plan to be the Lord of Kalmar, and it is not in my plan to keep the title. But the city needs leadership, it needs nobility, and I am asking every noble here to do their part of Kalmar and help restore her to the glory she deserves.

"Tidemaster and Arbitrator, I ask you to both speak with the rest of Alexandria, extend them this offer and explain this new urgency. Together we can forge a glorious land, together our future can be one of legends."

The dinner had started well enough. As the news spread of the new Duke Vladimir, Cayden glanced to one of his guards who went out to confirm the news. "I suppose we cannot say the visit has not been exciting," Cayden mused as he turned his attention back to Aila. Having let the guests pick the menu, there was a large assortment of seafood and some rarer meats available to them, some using popular Perdanese recipes and some using local Alexandrian styles, heavy with spice reminiscent of the volcano looming near the city.

Soon enough, one of the guards came in and whispered to Cayden, a wry smile stirring on his face. "Well, Duchess, it seems like things are never uneventful with you. Your grace is so well known, people proclaim status to even those beneath you. It is truly astonishing."

Turning his focus towards the recently proclaimed Duke, Cayden chuckles. "So many realms vying for Alexandria's nobility, each with a promise of glory and legends, preserving the culture even." Cayden stood, towering at six and half feet tall, he looked down the table, catching Valdimir's eyes. "Tell me, new Duke. How would you sell me on joining Eponllyn were I to say none of that matters to me?" Did it truly not matter? Cayden's face certainly didn't give it away. "What does Eponllyn truly offer my people?"

“What does Eponllyn truly offer my people?” This last question carried such a weight, and Vlad was unsure where to begin, but he knew that begin he must, and right now.

“Tidemaster Cayden, there is much I could say of Eponllyn, and it’s all worth saying, but instead I shall tell you the story of a young nobleman from a long forgotten family, I will tell you my story.

“I arrived as a true unknown, nothing but my education, my family's name, and some gold to call my own. My dream was to re-establish my family, to show my worth, and to do what I could for the glory of Eponllyn… and as is sometimes the case, I arrived in the middle of an argument. The Chief of Commerce had just abdicated after raising taxes and many were upset. I proposed some tax reforms aimed to help the knights Eponllyn, and by working closely with nobles both in and out of the government, my proposals became law. I then learned knights were not given a vote on the role of banker, I worked with the leaders to change that too. Then I asked to be an ambassador, a brazen thing for me to do, I see that now… but here I am traveling with and learning from the Duchess.

“I am not telling you this to exult my accomplishments, for they are of little account. I’m telling you this to show the truth of Eponllyn. Eponllyn is a place where you are only limited by your vision and your drive. Where you are given the freedom to create change. Where ideas are judged based on their value not their source, and everyone is given opportunity. It is a place that is shaped by it’s people, a place of grand stories, and unique characters and cultures... In short, it is a place I am happy to call my home.

“So what does Eponllyn truly offer your people? It offers them a future and a hope, it offers them an opportunity to pursue their dreams in the company of others who want to see those dreams achieved. That is what Eponllyn offers the people of Alexandria.”

Stopping what was a longer speech than he intended, Vlad looks about at all the eyes turned to him, then looks back at the Tidemaster.

Aila sits back in her seat with cup in hand worried for the first time in a very long time about one of her political trips as the Tidemaster turns his attention to a seventeen year-old recently made margrave. Is it hot in here? Aila wonders while uncharacteristically guzzling her wine. If they were about to be axed in two by Cayden she did not want to be sober for it.

To her immense relief, Vladimir seemed to have done alright with his answer and she was left with an empty cup and a few seconds to regain her composure. “It is Freedom, Cayden” Aila finally interjects “And it is a future.” The look in her eyes is not one of pride or haughtiness, the wine had done it's job to bring the slightest glint of humanity into the Duchess’ expression.

“Lorelai is a just Queen, she has given us a place where even young ones…” She glances at Vlad as she says it “Can feel proud. A seventeen year-old contributed to changing voting laws.” She throws her hands up in emphasis, but is also waggling a glass for a servant to refill- still not totally sure they were not going to end up axed. “Most realms on this continent have been the same for...fifty years. Eponllyn broke those chains, it is always changing. Improving. Advancing.

Just imagine what we could do for the faith. You and I have done so much from afar” Kenneth is suspiciously not mentioned here “Side by side we could do much more.”

The Margrave Resists

Vladimir sat by the fire in the Spire of the Bewitching Siren, holding the two letters and pondering. For the Tidemaster to address only Aila was quite the insult and Vlad felt it. "What is this!? does he believe me to be some trivial matter that can be safely ignored?" His manservant Chauncey was there, but he knew well enough that it was a rhetorical question.

"And then for the duchess to continue this, assuming these decisions can be made without me... At least our queen has the sense needed."

Vlad put the letters down and began to pace and think. When the local government appointed him he was shocked and confused, but since taking control he had to admit that he was good at being Margrave of Kalmar even if he didn't quite care for it. The lower nobles had chosen wisely. Kalmar started growing under his command, becoming a good place to live, and compared to the previous regime... well... people starved and the city is still dealing with all the rebel groups that formed under their command. Just handing it back... it felt like betraying these people that had put there trust in Vlad, and Vlad was starting to feel a true sense of belonging within Kalmar, even if he still disliked the fish.

Running his hands through his hair and letting out a deep sigh, Vlad turns to Chauncey, "Surprising that I received no letters today."

"My lord?" Chauncey askes, a bit confused.

Vlad locks eyes with Chauncey, and slowly and deliberately says, "I said surprising that I did not get any letters today... Be on the lookout though I expect to receive two important letters tomorrow."

"Yes my lord." replies Chauncey as realization dawns. Today is a not a sending day.

The banners of the Free Cities were not so vastly different to those of Alexandria, but as she saw them fluttering gently over the government buildings, the sea change was palpable. The Aldorman of the City had met her at the gates, his finest brocade embellished with the crest of the Sirensong.

Inside, the commoners treated her with cheering reverence or sullen nonchalance, with little between the two. She reached across taking Lucius' hand, Aurelian sat before his father, a mini copy, straight backed and handsome.

For all the flowers and cheer, there was a sense of unease to the city, a certain fractious undercurrent that seemed ready to cut through at any time. She was glad of Lucius presence, he seemed perfectly content with the undercurrent of chaos in the city. She liked order, straightforward simple lines... she rarely got it but it did not stop her wishing.

The Aldormans men guided her progress to the place Vladamir currently called home, an imposing building, high walls and gates that looked more like barricades.

She gave but the slightest nod to two of her men and the gates were opened ushering her into a courtyard. The banners of the realm, the city and of house Igelfeld were thick in the courtyard. Fat Bastard strode forward to the very centre, the Queen trusting her safety now to Vladamirs men as her own remained beyond the gate. Folding her hands before her she looked to the closed doors of the main house, and she waited.

"My lord," Chauncey says clearing his throat and interrupting Vlad's evening glass of wine. "the queen has arrived."

"Splendid! The food is ready, and the chambermaids are preparing their rooms?"

"Indeed my lord."

"Very well then," Vlad says as he puts down his glass and finishes signing a letter. "let us entertain the queen then shall we?"

Queen Lorelai, and any other nobility present, are brought to the main lower hall of the Spire of the Bewitching Siren, it is an haunting place, they say that while one is within these halls, a subtle song of a beautiful voice is always heard within one's head if you listen for it. But with an excessive number of candles, and warm tapestries in the lower hall, the bewitched nature of the place is subtle at best.

While descending the staircase and walking toward the queen Vlad says to those assembled, "Greetings and welcome to Kalmar." He bows respectfully to the queen, "Queen Lorelai Chamberlain, this visit is indeed a great honor and it is a pleasure to see you again. Welcome. We have prepared some of the greatest delicacies Kalmar has to offer for your visit, shall we proceed to the dinning room? "

Cai watched the Eponllyn royal procession arrive at the palace from one of the balconies, he heard footsteps on the stonework behind him and heard a voice. "Apollyon?" Cai whirled around confused as he felt a strange feeling of dread and sorrow wash over him. "What did you just say?" Standing before him was Amelia, she looked concerned and walked over pacing a reassuring hand on the man's shoulder. "I said Good Morning oh Highborn one, are you ok?" He nodded and turned back too look out over the courtyard.

He felt his vision cloud over red and for just a moment he was there in that burning city, blood dripping from his sword. The fear in his friends eyes, why did he do it? A cough brought him out of his thoughts, he sighed. It was all just a nightmare, he hadn't hurt anyone, it wasn't real."

"Sorry, had a rough time getting to sleep last night, did you finish drawing up the schematics yet?" He spoke with a clam tone, trying to redirect the conversation away from what had just happened. Amelia clearly saw through his words but she didn't press him further. She shook her head. "No not yet, I'll probably get it done by the day after tomorrow. I will be spending today enjoying the fine dining and company of the other courtiers and minor nobles who have travelled to Kalmar. What about you? You're the only knight of Kalmar after all, shouldn't you be with the Margrave welcoming the Queen?"

Cai leaned his against the railing of the balcony and shook his head. "First reason, I am just a simple knight , Second reason, I don't think I can dress or look nice enough to meet a Queen, Third reason, I'd just trip on my words and embarrass Vladimir, Fourth reason, I trust Margrave Vladimir, he doesn't need my help, that boy's got a good head on his shoulders."

Amelia shrugged "Well, you're going to be missing out then...so...what are you doing today then?" Cai shrugged himself. "No clue, maybe go out to the ruins near the volcano and see if can't find any more black steel that the legion left when they all vanished. Did you hear any gossip? I'd be open to hearing what's been going on, maybe it might inspire me with something to do today."

Amelia pursed her lips and thought for a moment, she nodded to Cai. "It's been relatively quite, I heard that Havard and his laborers got into a bar brawl with some thugs from the Sons of the Dragons down near the docks. Oh and I heard from the old bailiff's scribe that Ser Wolfram is looking for a man named Apollyon Daubeny." Again something about that name caused him to be overwhelmed with a sense of regret and sorrow.

He blinked and nodded. "I see....sorry Mel I am just a bit tired today. I think I might just hang around the palace today, I think I will go play some music in the song hall." He walked off and he could tell Amelia was worried, he hoped she would just go and enjoy the festivities. He might join in later but he felt the need to be alone for a bit.

He found his way to the song hall and sat down at the piano and warmed up, playing a simple song. Once he had warmed up he pulled out his own sheet music and set it down so he could read it. He had written this song a long time ago, he remembered it from a dream. It always reminded him of better times even if he didn't know why.

As he played he hummed to himself before quietly singing, his baritone voice echoing throughout the hall. "He rode through the streets of the city, Down from his hill on high, O' er the winds and the steps and the cobble, He rode to a woman's side, For she was his secret treasure, She was his shame and his bliss, And a chain and a keep are nothing, Compared to a woman's kiss, For hands of gold are always cold, But a woman's hands are warm." He thought he heard footsteps and embarrassed by his singing he chose instead to hum to the tune of the song as he continued to play.

She took a seat uneasily, his letters had been increasingly disrespectful and insubordinate to the point that she wished she had left Aurelian beyond his walls rather than him being in Vladimirs feast hall. Lucius sat by the boy, his own eyes appraising cutlery bringing a tense smile to her lips.

Vladimir had worked hard to show the honor and values of Eponllyn as he had worked as the aide to the Viceroy, but his elevation, and perhaps his failure to secure support to be elevated in Kazakh now saw him writing letters with clenched fists. He seemed to be representing power he clearly felt he possessed in a situation that was systematically undoing all the work they had done to show Alexandria and the entire continent that their sense of fairness and honor was universal and not simply aimed toward the glory of the state.

Now he seemed to be demanding to remain as Lord of a city they were illegally occupying while he decided whether or not he felt the chosen Lord of the legitimate state was appropriate to rule the city. She had sent him here with Aila to learn the craft of diplomacy, but events had gifted an ambitious man with enough rope that he might hang them all with his bold demands, it just seemed he couldn't see it. Already rival states were stirring the pots to march on Eponllyn to wrest the city and her nobles back to the banners of Alexandria. Even Eponllyns allies had sent messages that indicated their discomfort with the situation at hand.

He had worked with Aila to create the environment that would bring Eponllyn kudos and the potential of growth and development, and was now plunging a dagger into the heart of that achievement.

The room had been silent a while, courtiers and beaurocrats with seemingly far greater an understanding of the situation than the Lord of Kalmar watchful waiting for their Queen to speak.

She fell into the courtesies that had served her well over her career: "Lord Kalmar, my thanks for your hospitality.... I see there are several settings here, are we expecting the Viceroy? Your knights? - The Tidemaster and his aides perhaps?" Her words had little warmth, her cold fury and discontent finding little purchase in pleasantries.

She looked to Lucius and her son, allowing their presence to be her focus. Her husband locked eyes with her, his own tense smile communicating so much to her.

"Much as I - appreciate - your hospitality, I came here to do what honor and duty say I must... that is to restore to Alexandria her capital." She turned fully to the young Margrave. "This is what must be, it must be restored - without sanction - without condition. The peasantry are our charges, they do not command us, just as they do not truly have the right to choose their Lord."

She reached her hand to the Margrave. "Take my hand, Vladimir, you still have the opportunity to step back from your course of action with honor. Come with me as we hand the city back to the Tidemaster's rule. What must happen - must happen... I don't know what else to say to you."

Vladimir leans forward and speaks softly but firmly, "My Queen, Kalmar announced me as their margrave, without my bidding, without my request, and they did it because they needed help. The city was dying... I have since restored life this land, restored these people..." tears swell in the corners of Vlads eyes, "they are happy! They love me as their Margrave... and I love them."

Vlad leans back, "With all of that, I have said I will return Kalmar to Alexandria, for the good of the realm... but I make one simple request to meet with the future Margrave of Kalmar..." Vlad pauses, biting his lip and southing down the anger welling inside. "I believe that as a noble I am honour bound to these people, they called for my help, I have given it, and I intend to look after their wellbeing...

"I know that I am rambling, but your letters left me feeling that you believe me to be a power hungry young child, trying to clench tightly a toy that is not his... I assure you I am not, I do not wish to be Margrave or Duke of Kalmar, my wish is to hand the title to another... I do love the people here and would ask that lord if he has a place for me in Kalmar... I would not demand it, but I would ask, because I love this city and the people of it. And this I will say, I simply will not, no matter what, blindly abandon them, because they deserve better. I am honor bound to serve those who call for my help, and no threats of yours or of anyone else's will dissuade me from my responsibilities."

Vlad shakes his head, "Again, my request is a simple one, there is no other motive. Let me meet with the future margrave... If need be I will travel to him. I simply do not understand why this simple request is met with such strong opposition. Why are you asking me to forsake my duty snd behave dishonourably?"

It is a peculiar thing for Lorelai and her Husband to see; Aila Storme entering a room without any announcement, not even the blare of one trumpet. Instead she is seen first in the crack of the large doors to the chamber, then fully in view as a man beside her pushes the heavy door open with much more ease. After days in the City Aila looked more like a native than not, draped in local styles she had found acceptable and dripping in new jewelry made of volcanic gemstones.

The sound of a hard heel on an expensive boot treading across the floor is her only announcement today, with her arms brimming with important looking documents she can only bow half as deeply to her Queen as her Perdanese tutors would have approved of.

She nods curtly to Vladimir before setting her pile of papers down and breathing the words “Well this is certainly feeling awkward. I’ll get some drinks.”

With no invitation Aila wanders to a sideboard, selecting some wine to bring to the table, which she hands to Wolfram to open for her while she gathers their cups. No comments about lazy servants, no quips about how he did not give the queen even a sip to drink, not even a backhanded compliment.

“This is Sir Wolfram, my agent.” She introduced the rugged man beside her finally, handing him his cup third after the Queen and her husband, before Vladimir and taking the last herself. “He’s come to observe the proceedings as well. What are we working on this evening?”

Something is amiss, as the usually irascible Duchess takes her seat across from the Queen with a good-natured smile present on her pretty face.

The Spire of the Bewitching Siren was where the Arbitrator found herself, having followed the Eponllyn procession after receiving word from her scouts that the Queen herself had arrived. She had then been given letters from the High King of Caligus, but had not time to respond before rushing to follow the crowd marching past the inn she was currently staying in.

The colors of the new Margrave were already flying from the towers, a painful reminder she felt deep within her soul. Anger simmered within her gut, an emotion she had rarely felt, but for some reason had felt more in the past few weeks than ever before. Her gaze caught on the beautiful woman descending her horse inside the high gates, a man close by her side with a young boy. The Queen, she presumed, and her assumption was confirmed as the new Margrave appeared, escorting them within the old building.

Elrysend waited a moment before following after them, stretching a hand into one of the inner pockets of her dark blue cloak. The soft texture of a petal grazed her fingertips, and a sense of longing filled her. When was it that the threads holding Alexandria together had begun to snap? She missed the times when the stress of a fallen realm did not haunt her nightmares.

With a deep breath, she stepped inside the gates, steeling her nerves as she entered the den of pretty lies and twisted words.

~

After getting lost a few times, one of which included passing by a man playing the piano and singing in a very handsome voice, Elrysend finally found herself in the dining hall. As she stepped inside, she heard the new Margrave speaking at one of the long tables, discussing with the Queen as the Duchess made her way over. The man and young boy were already seated, while the Duchess had a new person beside her, one the Arbitrator didn't recognize.

"The city was dying..." Margrave Vladimir's words echoed in her ears as she paused, listening to the duration of his speech with a rising fury. When he finally stopped, and the Duchess sat down, the usually gentle Priestess finally snapped.

"HOW DARE YOU!" Her voice cracked from the shouting; this was the first time in years she had raised her voice. "HOW DARE YOU!" Burning with adrenaline, fueled by red hot anger, Elrysend marched over to the new Margrave, pointing a shaking finger at him. "How dare you say such things! You claim the people love you? That you have restored this land and these people? That they deserve better? You know NOTHING!"

Cheeks flushed, the Priestess stepped back, her eyes locked on the new Margrave in the deathly silent hall. "The founders of Alexandria worked for this land, bled for this land, and fought for it's people. For years, the nobles guided the land and the people through countless wars and droughts, famine and storms, even if the liine of Tidemasters was not the best. We sacrificed everything for this realm! Do you know what it is like to know a mother grieve for her fallen son, to laugh with the blacksmiths, to sweat with the farmers?"

Elrysend clutched a hand to her chest, tears pouring down her face. "As an Elder Priestess of the Blue Flame, I see the souls of the dead in wisps you cannot, I hear them cry, I hear them mourn for the lives they have lost. Do you know what it is like to see the spirits of people you once knew, spirits of the dead of your own realm, wandering aimlessly and wailing, tied to the land from regrets and curses? Do you know what it is like to see warriors cut down their bodies on the battlefield once more when they rise as the undead?"

She paused for a moment, turning to cough lightly into her sleeve. Blood stained the dark fabric; it seemed her intense emotions had caused her sickness to act up again. "Vladimir Von Igelfield, you have no right to demand to see whom the Tidemaster of Alexandria deems fit to take your place. Here, the people of Alexandria are not your toys, and you are no one but a spoiled young man corrupted by the power he was mistakenly given by angry peasants. When we first met, I had thought you were of a better disposition, which is part of the reason I was the first to suggest to my realm mates that we join with Eponllyn. But if this is how you of Eponllyn truly act when they see an opportunity for power, then I was incredibly wrong."

With a slight bow to the Queen, and a nod to the Duchess, Elrysend spun on her heel, leaving the dining hall. The Alexandrian servants who had been busy bustling around before her arrival glanced at each other, expressions of agreement mirrored upon their faces. But before they could get called out for slacking off, they resumed their work; silent, invisible eavesdroppers in the dining hall.

“Arbitrator,” Vlad says, fixing his gaze firmly on Elrysend, “I mean no disrespect to the past, to the great battles, or to the blood spilled. I also mean no disrespect to you or to your friends. But just because you feel my words to be untrue does not make them so.

“When I arrived, the people were depressed, loyalty to Alexandria was gone, and Kalmar was a hotbed of rebellion. In fact, Kalmar fell from your hands and you are lucky it fell to me.” As Vlad speaks he does not for a moment shift his eyes from Elrysend. “The people are happier, they are loyal, we are routing out the rebel forces, and yes, they love me as their margrave. These are the facts. They asked me for help and I am doing right by them.

“Now I have sacrificed day after day to help Kalmar. I have invested in Kalmar. And I do not ask for much… I ask only to meet my replacement. I ask this because I have a duty to these people who asked for my help! So I repeat my question that I asked My queen, why are you asking me to forsake my duty and behave dishonourably?"

Vlad takes the wine the duchess had placed there. “Welcome Duchess, I am glad you are here. Sorry for not addressing your question straight away, but I suppose my words have provided a good synopsis.”

-Interlude-

Vlad doesn’t know what to do, he has compromised and offered suggestions on how to solve this impasse. He does care for the people of Kalmar, he wants to see this renaissance of the city continue, he also wants a way out. He felt he had offered that by making a simple request, but apparently it was not so simple… and now he is stuck, these nobles keep yelling at him, forcing him to dig his heels deeper in, because to simply relent would do nothing for the people of Kalmar or for his honour… and now what he has worked for has been destroyed, and his queen hates him.

In all of this, if only someone would give him a way to uphold his honour and his duty to the people of Kalmar, and vacate the lordship. If he cannot simply meet the future margrave, there must be another way... It is his honour, his reputation, and the people of Kalmar that he cares about. Nothing else...

The Unofficial Summit of Rulers

Roleplay from Milo de Santis
Message sent to Everyone in Kalmar
The volcanic mountains had been in view on the far horizon all day, but still, upon cresting the final ridge, the first sight of Kalmar took Earl Milo de Santis' breath away.

The city was massive, nearly as large as Ibladesh, which he had seen all those months ago. But whereas Ibladesh lay on the coast of the Great Southern Lake, beyond Kalmar was the tallest mountain Milo had ever seen. It jutted upward like a deadly black dagger, tipped in molten red. And there, nestled at its base, lay the great city. Even from here, two or more miles away, he could easily make out the Great Library of Alexandria and the Spire of the Bewitching Siren, towering over the city but dwarfed by the great mountain in turn.

Milo looked around, and saw his men gawking as well. Meanwhile, High King Pasquale had kicked his horse forward, riding determinedly towards the city. Milo caught the eye of Captain Odamar and nodded towards the men. Odamar looked around, scowled, and snapped at them, "Look sharp and stop staring! We're here to guard the King, not sight-see!" With that, the retinue began moving again - thirty weary men on horseback, but nonetheless sitting upright and proud, with the Griffon Banner of Caligus snapping in the wind.

Milo thought back upon their journey, now that they were so close to their desperation. The news of chaos in Alexandria had shaken every Royal Court on the Continent. High King Pasquale immediately ordered a diplomatic mission to Kalmar, and called for volunteers. Milo had been honored when the High King had selected him as his retinue for the mission; as a sign of good faith, King Pasquale had chosen to leave the Royal Guard behind in Domus, but it was unwise for a Ruler to travel unguarded across East Continent.

North they had ridden, through the mountain passes of Scio, into the verdant forests of Nascot. There, the High King had undertaken the holy vows of the Aspects of the Flame in a small temple nestled in an idyllic hot-spring glen. Since then, King Pasquale had been almost incessantly poring over the scrolls the Priests of the Flame had given him. At night, when they shared dinner in his tent, the High King would tell Milo what he had learned that day - of Khelta, the Goddess of Scales, how she balanced the world between light and dark, and how her role as Gatekeeper of the Horizon divided our would so. How the Golden Dawn, of which the King has always been a loyal and fervent member, was perhaps an aspect of Khelta herself, acting to bring balance to the world. How this mission itself was an effort from Khelta to balance East Continent, for as Alexandria faded, Caligus might grow.

By day they rode and by night they talked, through the "town" of Bescanon (though it was larger than either city of Caligus), across the Bescan River into Troyes (where his men were alert to the point of anxiety, for it was their first time in a non-allied realm), to Poitiers (the site of many famed battles, which Milo had read about on the way north), and into Lundel, where they had found their first unwelcome surprise.

After arriving in Lundel, news reached them that another region had broken off from Alexandria. Not only that, but the peasants complained of monsters stalking the land, hardly a day's ride from Kalmar or southern Alexandria! What was happening here? Lundel had been a part of Alexandria not too long ago, and now monsters stalked the land? The chaos of the transition of Kalmar was infecting the countryside. Milo took his men out hunting, and killed perhaps half the beasts before calling off the hunt; even killing just 3 of the monsters had cost 3 of his own men and left 7 wounded. The diplomatic mission moved on, unsettled with these strange new tidings.

Now, as they rode under the gates of Kalmar itself, Milo felt his spirits lift. They had made it - and if there was anyone who could convince the Alexandrians that Caligus was the best realm for them, it was High King Pasquale. Yes, perhaps everything would be alright. They rode through bazaars and past inns, ever towards the great Spire. Soon enough they arrived, and as the guards approach the Caligan retinue, Milo raised a hand and called out.

"Hail from Caligus! Hail from Pasquale of House Contefigardo, the High King! Hail from the Griffin of the South! We have come to treat with Margrave von Igelfeld, and all those of Old Noble Alexandria!"

The guards hailed in return, and permitted them into the courtyard. Milo again nodded to Captain Odamar to remain with the men, while he himself trailed behind the King. Milo had done his part - the King was safely in the palace. But now, they were in the arena of politics, and it was the High King's turn to lead the way. Milo silently prayed to the Trinity that it was the right way.

She favoured Aila with her most brittle smile, the shock wave from Elrysend's intervention clearly lost on Vladimir. She brought her hands before her, clasped tightly, lest she throw something at the entitled fool who yet managed to conceive of himself as being in charge of this situation. Knuckles whitened then relaxed as she brought her hands flat on the table, finally bringing her eyes up to regard the young Lord. She tried to contextualise, to remember the potential she had seen in this eager young man. But to learn, one had to listen, and Vladimir seemed deaf to everything but what he thought in his own mind.

She sighed sitting back in her chair, those who didn't know her might see this as the body language of defeat, and on some level she was defeated, because try as she might to save the young man before her from himself, his actions would swallow him whole if he could not change course in the next few minutes.

She brought her eyes to his. "You asked me; you asked me, before the council and the realm to be an ambassador. I admired your enthusiasm. The Prince of the Isles spoke on your behalf. Your Duchess, the Viceroy agreed to tutor you and take you as her Aide. To learn you must listen as well as speak - ask questions and learn from the answers. You stopped listening several days ago and have done un-tellable harm since.

You have repeatedly criticised the Alexandrians for their management of this city, denigrated the work of the last Lord. That last Lord was the Tidemaster himself, -in diplomatic circles do you truly believe that this is a helpful direction to go? Kalmar left the care of Alexandria - not because of mis-rule - but because they had more lands than they had nobles to enforce law and order. The turn of the coin that sees you as Lord of this place is at worst chance alone... or at best because the people sought the rule of Eponllyn - a feudal order you yourself have also denigrated repeatedly in letters and in deeds. - You have ignored me every time I have told you that you are besmirching our reputation and honor with your 'reasonable requests' - actually let us not call them requests, for they are stubborn demands.

And when it comes to these demands - what do you hope to achieve? - You speak to Sir Arlox and what? You educate him on how to run a region - insulting - you decide you mis-like him and demand a different more able Lord or Lady? I cannot comprehend how you think this can ever be seen as reasonable or end well." She breathed deeply. "I know you think I am against you Vladimir, but I am trying so hard to save you from yourself here."

She took a drink of the wine to steady herself. He was a young man, the enthusiasm she had so admired yet burned strong, even if it was directed badly these past few days. She thought back to the actions she herself had taken to secure Oligarch, not her finest hour, and actions that could have seen the Free Cities project end before it had begun. This was yet another crisis but not unassailable. She continued quietly, lowering her voice so that all present had to listen to her words in silence. "Viceroy, prepare the paperwork for the return of Kalmar to Alexandria. Vladimir, you won't be meeting Lord Arlox, it is neither our place or right to make such demands. However if there is any possibility the Alexandrians yet want to add their culture to our Free Cities; Viceroy, I would that you ask the Tidemaster if he is agreeable to Sir Vladimir acting as Steward of the City under whomsoever he sees fit to appoint as its Lord. -Vladimir, after what has been said, I can neither promise nor compel anything from the Alexandrians, but nobody can deny your love of these citizens, and a city does well with a strong Lord and supporting Steward. - Is this acceptable to you?"

“A STEWARD?” The judge guffaws, grabbing her own wine with a glum expression. Stewards were little more than bean counters but even so the job is an honour, and after all the trouble Vladimir had caused her it stung.

After a sip Aila pushes three scrolls in front of her Queen without permission, standing up to point “Fine, Ban, Abandon, I wrote all of these up for you.” The Duchess looks and feels like she is back in school, urging her teachers to notice her effort. She pulls one straight, revealing her own meticulously perfect handwriting on the many blocks of legal text; it must’ve taken her hours.

Cayden stopped Elrysend in the halls as she stormed past. The Arbitrator had given her best and worst, and honestly he was proud of her. Little was exchanged. A hand on her shoulder, a knowing weak smile, and two words. "Thank you." Elrysend had seen the fires that burned in Cayden's eyes before. Once it had been under Dalai, the Black Flame, an act he never wished to repeat, but this time, the steeled nerves were something different. He stepped around her and walked toward the meeting room preparing for something.

Inside Cayden churned, a raging sea of emotions that things had gotten this far out of hand. While Elrysend was often vocal about what serving Khelta did to her, Cayden was less inclined to share the emotions behind the Goddess of the Red Flame that delegated her powers to her children. The anger and fury that could swallow a man, lose him in battle for years as he wandered the world looking for a chance to break free. Galtea's Flame was uninhibited passion burning with a will to set things as they should be.

Disarmed of his axe out of politeness, the giant of a man waited outside until he was announced.

"The Tidemaster is here, Your Majesty," the call rang out.

Cayden entered the talks next. "Honored guests," he began, reminding them that this was his city. "I have come to offer a compromise for our current situation, one that I'm sure that everyone here will understand," his kind words seemed to have an edge as he made his way to the table. Standing over six and a half feet tall, the Tidemaster towered above the table, and instead of sitting he only leaned over it. Producing a sword from his belt, he set the weapon down in its scabbard on the table. "This is my compromise," he says, pinning the handle to the table as he pulled the scabbard away, revealing the weapon.

"This is the Cursed Nightblade of Oligarch, inadvertently inherited from former Tidemistress Sigrid. I have a lot of good will from other realms right now, realms happy to use force to take Kalmar back, so let me make this offer instead. Give me my city back, we walk away as if nothing happened and start clean, or I enforce the claim this gives me on your city instead."

Otherwise my husband would have claim to the entirety of Sirion....

Pasquale stood in the antechamber of the palace, absentmindedly thumbing a very small sapphire he had purchased as he had passed through a bazaar outside the city. The young king stood of medium height and build, and was thinly bearded and mustached, wearing his preferred silk tunic, with gold trim, over which was a coat of blue with red trim. A deep forest green cloak completed his ensemble. He and his good friend Milo were waiting for the herald to enter and announce his arrival to the participants that were already present. Ever the utilitarian, Milo still wore his armor, although an attendant had at least brushed it clean of the strange black dust and dirt that the land here was made of. The cavalryman was slightly shorter and more slim than Pasquale, and clean shaven to boot. Perhaps his lighter weight improves proficiency upon horseback, and mayhaps I could stand to lose some weight myself, he mused, not for the first time in his life.

Interrupting his thoughts, a liveryman dressed in the Eponllyn colors of green and blue approached them, and bowing before them, said, "Your grace, the Queen, the Tidemaster, and the assembled lords are ready to receive you both. If you would follow me please." Leading them through a series of twisting halls and unusual layout of rooms, the man certainly seemed to know his way. Pasquale marveled yet again at the gorgeous stonework and masonry, that almost seemed to ebb and flow, rather than stop and start like traditional brick and mortar construction. The faint blue sheen on the walls reminded him at every moment of the power and majesty of this place, and there seemed to always seemed to be subtle movement or shifting on the walls, the dim light in here likely playing trick upon his mind.

Approaching an opening in the maze, a retinue of stationary guards and servants crowded around a door, all with their ears pressed tightly against it. At the sound of approaching footsteps, they all scurried and hopped away: the sentries sheepishly retaking previously assigned positions; and the various cooks, maids, butlers, and scribes ran off to resume their proper duties. The youthful king chuckled to himself, knowing full well that the commoners, however maligned and mistreated by the nobility, likely had forgotten more in gossip and in personal secrets of nobles, than the greatest and most wizened scholars could ever hoped to learn in all the tutelage of their lives combined. That did not mean that it was right or proper, just human nature.

A middle-aged man with a green and blue tabard, emblazoned with an image of a hippocamp, or a sea horse as some might call it, rushed quickly to stop the liveryman in his tracks, and began whispering urgently in his ear. Suddenly the liveryman's face turned pale, and he gasped at one point in whatever tale the man told. Pasquale eventually grew a tad bit impatient and huffed, reminding the heralds of their duties. Quickly, the face of the man in the tabard flushed in embarrassment, and bowed towards the king deeply, begging apologies. Pasquale waved him off and told the man that all would be forgive, if only he could be introduced now, and quickly, instead of being made to wait further. The herald stiffened immediately and waved the liveryman away, and strode for the nearby doors that had just been crowded by the servant-peoples.

Bursting rapidly into the room, likely due to his shame, the herald bowed and announced: "Queen Lorelai Chamberlain, Tidemaster Cayden Navaar, assembled lords and ladies; I have the honor of presenting King Pasquale Contéfigardo of Caligus, and his vassal, Milo de Santis, Earl of Supra, who has accompanied his sovereign here." The manservant had entered so quickly, he had failed to notice the tableau of tension arrayed before them: centrally, a giant of a young man, looming over a table, grasping a sword; a gorgeous raven-haired and olive-skinned woman seated in the position of honor with a smirk upon her face, likely Queen Lorelai Chamberlain; an extremely youthful red-haired man with a prominent chin, seated, looking surprised; a handsome black and blue robed man practically plastered against the wall, who hurriedly withdrew his hand from out of his robes as Paquale entered; and a beautiful blonde woman, seated, swirling a goblet of wine in her hand. All looked surprised and annoyed at being intruded upon.

Pasquale strode forward and carefully weighed his thoughts in his mind; he had clearly entered into a very tense and fraught situation, rather unprepared for it. Originally his intent had been to present a speech to the Alexandrians, but clearly events had moved forward with no one keeping him abreast of the details. No matter. He would solve it as he had most other puzzles in his life: dogged determination and quick wit, with hopefully a bit of charm and humor.

Pasquale strode forward, focusing his attention on the presence of the Queen of Eponllyn. "Greetings Queen Lorelai Chamberlain, it is good to meet you in person. I had hoped our first interaction to be under less auspicious conditions, but beggars do not get to be choosers, as my father used to say. On the other hand, I am quite pleased that our opening dialogue will be during a challenging time for all here in the region, as I understand that true character is forged and also revealed in the fires of adversity. Amidst a land of volcanoes, it does not surprise me that passions among people have become inflamed too. And I have a guess as to the causes, likely connected to the reasons for my travels here to the north. Regardless, Queen of the Free Cities, leader of the Horselords, your presence here suggests that mayhaps momentous undertakings are afoot." He finished his short speech of greeting with an inclined head and an appraising look in her direction, smiling to attempt to soften his interruption of proceedings.

Turning to face the other lords and ladies assembled, Pasquale now with a lurch recognized the sigil of white wolf upon a blue chevron, emblazoned upon the cloak of the large man standing in the middle of the room. This was Cayden Navaar, Tidemaster of Alexandria! "Tidemaster Cayden! My greetings to you as well. Truly indeed, a meeting of three leaders of realms calls for the scribes and the record keepers to jot down this date for the history books and scrolls. You and your people are just the ones I came to visit, as I said in my letter, to which I seem to have outpaced your response to. Gratifyingly, my scouts learned of your presence in Kalmar, when I had almost turned south to Venas. Lucky for us, this moment in time brings us all together, to decide the near future of the great realms of this continent." He nodded in a friendly manner to the great bear of a man, very glad that the sword in his hand did not seem ready to be wielded in anger, as it would take a great many men to bring down this mountain of a human.

Spinning to address the others in the room, he affected a very slightly sheepish behavior, saying, "To the rest of the fine nobles in attendance, I have yet to have knowledge of your persons or to make your acquaintance, and yet I am eager to meet and entreat with you all. Please feel free to approach me at your earliest convenience, after negotiations conclude." Spying a table with drinks and bottles in the corner, he made his way over there as he spoke further. "It appears that discussions were deeply engaged and perhaps even heated when I entered, yet I am hopeful that behavior can be left behind. We of highborn status should conduct ourselves with propriety and decorum, as you all surely know. Strong emotions can be difficult to handle, and yet the balanced scales of justice need us to be able to restrain ourselves."

Seating himself at the spot at the table that was furthest from any other person, he concluded: "With my intrusion, I surely stopped some kind of discussion of great importance. Far be it from me to limit such matters of great import. I wish to join in on them as well, for Caligus has presented an olive branch to the remaining people of Alexandria, and I sense that events here pertain greatly to that topic." His keen eyes shone with delight, as he was getting to engage in some of his favored elements: speech-giving and negotiation. He figured he had taken the spotlight long enough. "I yield to the continuance of such talks, as were proceeding before my intrusion."

Cayden said nothing as the High King of Caligus entered the room and introduced himself. He merely looked around the table, slowly, letting his eyes land on each person in time. With a bark of a laugh he slid the scabbard back over the sword. "That's a nice way of putting it. A sword I should not have inherited tells me it means something to someone, though I'm certain I could just snap the blade and be done with it. Such a tool only works once after all," he suggested as he puts it back on his hip. "But I'll at least enforce my claims. That your husband won't either speaks of his love of peace, or that he's not ambitious enough to pursue them. And you, telling me the loyalty of a man that tried to make off with my city, and that he should have any position tells me you want to make him my problem regardless of our decisions. Truly the honor of Eponllyn is staggering to behold." Shaking his head he looks around the table. "I'm not here to play games with half-truths and polite words. At the urging of my dear friend, the Duchess here, I was entertaining thoughts of ushering my people to your lands, to preserve our culture, however these events seem to have only soured the taste in everyone's mouths. I'm certain my predecessor is laughing uncontrollably and has no idea why."

With a turn, the man who lead both a faith and a realm directed his attention to the High King from Caligus. "Welcome to Kalmar, High King," he offered with a friendly bow. "You come at a time where we are looking to get our city back. The Queen has been telling me tales of her people's honor, but so far none have offered the same generosity as Caligus, the Pearl of the East. To simplify it, High King, we are at an impasse. I do not want Eponllyn to get rewarded with our city if we leave for other lands, but I feel like leaving it as a rogue city would only dishonor the efforts of Alexandria to maintain the city as well."

Cayden paced the short end of the table twice before a flashing a wolfish grin. "If you do not have any sage advice, perhaps I should be a bit more courteous to Queen Alyssa. Her representative is almost here, and I do need to get back to the King of Perleone as well. I may have shown preferential treatment for too long now."

Pasquale carefully considered the Tidemaster's words. This made sense: Alexandria has governed this land for quite some time, and so would be loathe to either abandon the people or surrender it to another. How to address this?

"Tidemaster, it seems that your concern for the people is indeed as great as was described, and they quite deserve to have your caring governance. I would proffer the idea that, in the future, if it came to it, Caligus would be prepared to attempt colonization of Kalmar, if it doth remain unclaimed by any other. And I would assume that you would be the first volunteer for such a colony, were you to be in a position and residence to do so." He smiled knowinly at the big man, as if they shared a secret that no other knew.

Turning to the dark-hair woman of truly regal countenance at the head of the table, he said, "However, Queen Lorelai, I hope it would not be a bold claim to say that Eponllyn would be interested in ownership of the city of Kalmar if Alexandria does cease existence. Perhaps an agreement could be drawn up, that the former Alexandrians have a perpetual claim upon the city, if they could again resume and recover into the number of nobles needed to propagate the realm again? And that until such a time came, if ever, the Eponllyn people and lands would be entitled to the control of the city? Perhaps an exact number could be decided for the realm to engage upon this claim: mayhaps 10 or 15, whatever we three deem to be a reasonable and sufficient number."

"Perhaps this could ease or side-step entirely the discussions at which this party found itself at an impasse of? A treaty which states that Eponllyn controls the city until a time at which, if it ever even does come to pass, that Alexandria could be reformed again?"

She felt a little ambushed, she wasn't even sure what the King of Caligus was doing at what was supposed to be a closed meeting. But then events this evening had been a mess to say the least.

"High King, a pleasure to meet you. Now to your questions - it may be unfashionable, but personally I find it ridiculous for any realm - including my own - to lay claim to any region they do not have the capacity to hold... that you would further propose that a realm you wish to absorb into your population, thereby rendering it defunct should have claims to anything is bizarre indeed. If Alexandria should perish.... are you suggesting that Alyssa should send her ambassadors to find some remnant of a government that no longer exists to ask permission to take the Altar of Flames.... should Eponllyn pay some stipend to a knight of Caligus to run the lands of Lundel? Did Alexandria seek the permission of Brock Ketchum to rule Oroya - I sincerely doubt it - No... your offer is an empty one because as well intentioned as it is, it actually means nothing without the consent of the rest of the continent to respect claims of something that you would be facilitating not existing.

Eponllyns offer is a simple one. You join the Free Cities, Kalmar becomes part of the Primacy cycle, taking its turn as capital of the state with the Duke acting as Viceroy to set the administrative agenda for that period of Primacy. Alexandria goes from being a realm to being a Duchy, the culture and connections within your Duchy remain intact, if that is through some secret society or indeed a public members club for all who are tempted by the Sirens song.... so be it. If at some stage you have the man power and the will to once again become an independent state.... We are not called the Free Cities for nothing. -We would wish you well and I hope that you would leave as friends and certainly in a stronger position than you are now.

If you decide to stay as an independent state, and attempt to revitalise from where you currently stand, so be it too.... we will continue to feed your city as we have these past months.

As to setting the City rogue, if that is your intent, I could avoid the beaurocratic headache of the transfer of your city now, and simply remove the name of Alexandria from the documents prepared by my Viceroy. If it were rogue - in answer to your question High King - the Free Cities do not have the capacity to take the city at this time, but if we did and if it was available we might. Indeed the old Prince of the Isles is amongst our nobility and may well have ideas of a revival of the obsidian culture that once resided here... however, I have my eyes on at least two or three more regions before I would be thinking about a rogue city of Kalmar... that is me though, and though I am Queen, I have people who might have other priorities.

So in short, my offer is a simple one. Bring Kalmar to us, keep your culture alive as the Duchy of Alexandria.... Sirens Song... whatever you choose. Allocate Lords to seats in your Duchy, as you see fit. Participate in government with a seat in council for the representative of Alexandria and as Viceroy during the Primacy of Kalmar. As an elected government including the crown, your nobles would be eligible for any role within our government should they have such ambitions and have become our nobles. If the culture of Alexandria enjoyed a resurgence and wished once more to be independent and had the numbers to do so.... so be it. I only offer what I can give, it is not dependent on the whims of other states.... or on treaties that can be broken."

She looked across at her husband and her son before directing her attention back to Vladimir. "As to your comments regarding my noble Vladimir. I hope more than anything that he returns with me, I would sooner have the enthusiastic diplomatic mis-steps of a young and ambitious noble at my side than the silent drones preferred by others. That he loves this city you have built is the only reason I suggest him remaining in a capacity aimed to support the land. He is a son of the Free Cities, and we have all made mistakes in our time... we live and we learn, and I hope he continues to learn at my side."

Lucius laughed as the Tidemaster held his weapon triumphantly in front of him.

The Duke of Eleador leaned in close to his son and whispered into his ear. "You know how I promised to take you to the circus? Will these clowns do instead?"

The Poe could sense that his wife was tense, no doubt due to the situation that was unravelling in front of her. Nothing she couldn't handle of course as it appeared that amongst all the royalty gathered within this room she was the only one with the balls to do anything. She had a fair proposal that ensured that the culture of Alexandria still existed and could thrive amongst the Free cities.

The King of Caligus, an unexpected development that sent Aila sitting up straight in her chair, observing the style of his clothes and age of the young regent. She had always had an admiration for Caligan men, taking more than one for herself over the years she finds herself lost in thought as he speaks over their meeting table eloquently.

The Queen smooths everything over expertly, everyone seems reasonably pleased although the Tidemaster is still clearly irked- but a good resolution to this mess would help to solve that complication.

As all eyes fall onto Vladimir, awaiting his reply to all of the suggestions and chatter about his very self the boy remains silent, peering out at his betters as if watching a play unfold rather than a mess of his own making.

Until now Duchess has remained calm and reserved, presented her solutions, even served wine herself where Vladimir had failed to and said not a word about it. Pretty and petite she may be, but the sharpness of her voice cuts through the low chatter in the echoey room like whips crack in the air. Her well manicured hand slams on the table as she glares directly at the tables head, roaring at him “Are you going to sit there silent as a dunce, you ninny?”

She stands, giving him a look accompanied by one warning finger and commands him the same way she commands her young son to clean his wooden knights off of the floor “Stand down or sign the City to Alexandria, choose now!”

… So it seems Vlad cannot heed his uncle’s advice, and amongst the parade of Kings, Queens, and Diplomats, he is uncomfortably the center of attention. Composing himself as quickly as he can, Vlad forgoes the lengthy speech he had been composing, and simply answers the question, “Duchess, I believe my duty is to the people of Kalmar, and thereby to Alexandria.” He then looks to the Tidemaster, “Tidemaster, I return Kalmar to you, its rightful ruler, and ask for the honor of serving under your command, for the people and the glory of Alexandria.”

Cayden looks over the paperwork as Vladimir declares his sudden loyalty to Alexandria, still a realm on its last throes of life. He suppresses an eye roll and turns away from the table, taking slow measured steps toward the doors. Let it not be said I learned nothing as a knight of Lucius Poe. Cayden drew the sword once more and with a harsh slice, a faint screech of metal being dragged across something it shouldn't pierced the air. Sparks kicked up from the tip of the blade and caught something. A myriad of flames sprang up, zipping around the room in a vibrant display of the colors of the five Flames, gold, red, blue, black, and white.

"Now that I have everyone's attention, and the palace is mine once more, might I ask that those of us not ruling realms leave this room." His eyes fell on Aila. "Chief Justice, you of course may stay, as your efforts in peace have been most admirable and I think we could use your sharp mind."

His gaze fell upon Vladimir next. "For you, I suggest seeking the forgiveness of the Arbitrator or you may find yourself returning to Eponllyn shortly."

Finally, he sheathed the blade and removed the scabbard once more. "And since a tool is only useful once, and to not irritate your guard, this is yours, provided you promise to keep it for yourself," he says as he sets the Cursed Nightblade on the table before Aila. "A token of my appreciation for your efforts so far, my friend."

Gesturing to the door, "The rest of you can go kill each other in the halls for all I care."

To no ones surprise Aila's harsh words had finally spurred the room into action; Papers and scrolls were exchanged with pots of ink being opened on all sides of her in a flurry of clerical chatter, the Duchess sips yet more wine as the scratching of quills signals the end of her woes with Vladimir. The retreat of the Tidemaster causes her to look up at last, sitting at attention as the sound of a sword being drawn fills the room.

Cayden always did have a way of making a show, and with no uncertain terms brought the room to a standstill as he makes his requests as Tidemaster. He has the good sense to keep Aila at his side and as he compliments her sharp mind, the Duchess' serious expression quirks into a faint smile broadening as he suggests Vladimir think about his apology for their own judge.

The hefty blade is left on the table in front of Aila, who looks in disbelief as he bequeaths it to her here in front of everyone else. Finally, some reward for everything she had been through- she looks relieved to think that this hadn't been a complete waste of her time and breathes the words "I will take care of it, thank you for this gift." before he tells the rest how he truly feels about them. It takes all her self control not to grab the blade and look at it up close right there, but her manners keep her hands folded neatly on her lap instead.

Pasquale Contéfigardo who she had never seen before but was very interesting in meeting, remained standing through the ruckus. With the business of dealing with the young Lord settled, she looks well appeased as she tries to catch the attention of the new man in the room, glancing first at him then the seat beside her hoping to coax him over.

She was grateful to be able to give Lucius the briefest nod of consent to take her son from this place. Vladimirs loyalty had been only to himself and his hubris; that certainly did not make for Kalmar being the safe place it should have been for any of them. It had been a mistake to trust him it would seem, and now that mistake had cost Eponllyn in terms of both reputation and possibility of future growth. She couldn't bring herself to even look at the boy.... his family would be so very ashamed of him.

Instead she turned her eyes to Wolfram, he stood ready to gut any one of them at the bidding of Aila it would seem, it was so at odds with Jacelyn that she was intrigued to know him better.... though this clearly wasn't the time. "Sir Wolfram, I truly wish we had been able to meet properly before I was to impose on your patience, but might you see my husband and son safely to Poitiers."

Aila's fury had been painted clearly. Lorelai reached for the scrolls of immaculately prepared orders and judgements, clear hours of work. She rolled them into a scroll case and added them to the documents of state she kept at her side. As she received the sword she at least seemed a little more content. - even making eyes at the High King.

Stealing herself she looked at the Lordling of Kalmar, anger being overtaken by sadness. "Good luck Vladimir, we have all made mistakes in the enthusiasm of youth, only most of us learn from them rather than continuing to make them. I will be judicious with the truth when I speak to your kin... though I cannot promise they won't hear the rumours no doubt spreading among the peasants of your behaviour this day. " She turned back to Cayden. "So you have your city Tidemaster, albeit with an unwanted tenant at the helm.... what now?"

A few hours after sunfall, a group of roughly 50 rode slowly as one into Kalmar.

A single banner, green and white, centered with a bell, rose from the center of the pack. Plate-mailed soldiers, the lot, with green and white tabards to match their banner. Some had been stained with the blood of monsters slain on the journey here. Their pauldrons were adorned with colorful flowers like wreaths. They rode draft horses, no good for combat. At the front rode Jericho Gadwel, hooded under a deep green cloak, trimmed with white. He, and another, taller, dark skinned man rode a few paces ahead of the pack and stopped briefly to examine a statue within the city limits.

Captain Volkhard studied the pose curiously. "Say is that..."

Jericho dismounted to read the inscription, throwing off his hood and revealing his neat, corn-blond hair. "Tidemistress Latínã Montgomery, yeah... I guess that's her."

Wilfried looked at Jericho at and raised his eyebrows. Jericho rolled his eyes and mounted back on his horse.

Pasquale felt the situation slipping away from him, as the Eponllynese Queen’s speech continued. Her plan would further in balance the realms of the land, likely leading to turmoil and conflict, with new super powers of world instead of old. What he proposed wood instead rebalance the lands of the world as the Goddess Khelta would desire. Thinking this, and remembering on his reasons of the trip here and his conversion to a new faith, his passion was renewed.

Looking about the room as Queen Lorelai spoke, Pasquale saw a short funny looking man in the corner laugh in an ugly sort of way, and lean over and whisper something to the child next to him. In addition, the petite blonde woman also seated at the table nearby stared at him hungrily. This gave him pause, and he wondered: Did she seek power, or the warmth of another in bed? Or was she just plain hungry? If it was the third option, Patrick knew that discussions needed to be ended soon, as a woman was at her most dangerous when she was on an empty stomach.

After the queen of Eponllyn finished, all eyes fell to Vladimir, the youth with the ginger hair and the pronounced chin. Suddenly, and with great force belying her small frame, the blonde women loudly barks a question at the young man, demanding him to act and choose. Pasquale knew immediately that peril was near: this woman was starving! He almost fled the room to find a plate of food for her that instant.

Instead he waited on tenterhooks for the young man to speak. “Tidemaster….,” he croaked, voice breaking, “I return Kalmar to you, it’s rightful ruler, and ask for the honor of serving under your command, for the people and the glory of Alexandria.”

The tension in the room was almost thicker than it was before moments ago. Sure, the impasse that had held up negotiations was now no longer before them, but the situation has barely changed otherwise. Alexandria now had just one extra noble and it’s capital back, but it was still in its death throes. His thoughts upon the tension in the room being sick enough to cut with a knife, must have found a similar thought in the mind of Tidemaster Cayden, as he raised his sword menacingly, shot colorful sparks about with it, and sent everyone out of the room except we three rulers and the blonde woman, who he now knew as Chief Justice Aila Storm, of Eponllyn. Shockingly Cayden then gifted the blade her carried to Aila. She thanked him profusely. Pasquale saw this bequeathment as both the gift of thanks that he stated it was, as well as representative of the Tidemaster’s possible resignation that Alexandria’s future lay in dissolution. It seemed an important artifact of their people, and if he thought he could still recover his realms stature, Pasquale was sure he would have kept it.

The Tidemaster sat and asked for Eponllyn and Caligus to marshal their arguments and present them. Chief Justice Aila made eye contact with him, and he took it as a sign to speak. Pasquale stood up and paced around the room as as the knights and lords and ladies left.

After waiting for everyone else in the room to file out, while still pacing about the room, he began, “Even considering the fact that the situation has not changed much further than it was before this whole even started with the revolt of Kalmar, I think that you all have been a bit harsh with that young man, Vladimir. Despite my disagreement with his decision, it could not have been an easy one to make, and I hope you all realize the strength of character that implies he has. If he were here right now, I would commend him for his courage, while probably also critiquing him for the missteps that were made, but that is water under the bridge now.”

“We should still move on to hopefully discuss the meat of the matter at hand now. The future of Alexandria is threatened, with more nobles in government then without. This balance is untenable and dangerously close to anarchy. I propose that something be done about this. I still hold that in agreement be drawn up that Alexandria, as a realm be put in a sort of limbo state, or suspension. It currently exists now, and to save it I propose that we accept matters that they are at hand. Writing a document that the reformation of a realm is not one that is as implausible as you make out Queen Lorelai. If a realm did not exist, I would wholeheartedly agree with you that a nonexistent realm laying claim to a land is lunacy. However we are proposing a dissolution of an entire nation, and you wish for them to join your people. In essence you are wishing for the death of one country to aid in the growth of another.”

“What I wish is something altogether different, I want Alexandria to exist, I do truly. However for the sake of actually ensuring its existence I think that the nobles of the round should live in exile, in other realms, wheresoever they choose to go. And that these individuals in exile, along with any that they could gather to their cause, or the return of any form or Alexandrians from retirement or what so have you, be permitted to reform their realm, as it currently exists, again in the future.”

“Of course, up until that point Eponllyn, as the nearest neighbor, should be permitted to govern and ensure the safety of the people of Kalmar, in order to both benefit themselves and the people here, and also ensure the safety of this region for the possible future return of Alexandria, if it ever so comes to pass that the exiled ones gather enough support and return.”

“I do not think that this plan is really so far out of possibility as you seem to place it so Queen Lorelai. You are literally proposing ending a realm. I would like to argue that it be given a chance to begin again, and the only thing that could allow that possibility is diplomacy between us. If anything, you likely know how far-fetched and difficult the possibility of them actually achieving such a goal would be. With such a long odds, I argue that you give it a chance, because math and probability favors that they do not make it. But by your hand, you condemn them if you do not offer them the option. I have gone on this speech for long enough, and I seem to be making the same points over and over again. I will yield the floor to another.”

"The topic of conversation," Cayden said sitting back down at the table, "is 'What to do with Alexandria?'"

The room cleared out slowly, people no longer sticking around for the show while Cayden cleared his throat. "So far, I have two realms, Caligus and Eponllyn offering to take in the Alexandrian nobles. I am firmly of the belief that there's little left of our realm. Two regions, a city that requires exorbitant amounts of food, and enough nobles that we can scrape by a living, but little else. Maintaining the city would take us into Eponllyn's territory, however, would it be the right thing to do? Would it be fair to bind the nobles to a city and a dream that may never take flight again when they could see other parts of the world, take up homes in a new region with room to spread their wings?" His eyes fell on Aila and the blade he once claimed as his own, so easily given up, a sign he appreciated the meaning, but was not attached to anything in particular.

"Both of your realms have been more than generous to my people, and while I do not want to turn this into a competition of who wants us more, I would like to give you both the opportunity to make your cases and put your ideas forward. This opportunity could tip or tune the balance of the East Continent for ages to come, and I want to be sure we all are on the same page. I merely want my nobles to be happy and comfortable in their homes, wherever they may be."

A single gesture brought more glasses of wine, a servant stopping by Aila to top off her own glass after choosing a second bottle to what she had already opened. Cayden raised his glass to the group at the table. "To the future," he toasted. "And whatever it may hold."

She looked up at the High King. "What an interesting set of assumptions you make." She remained seated, tired and far beyond the need for grand-standing. "Firstly, your points about Vladimir are made on the limited interaction you have seen, if I had been as ill informed as you and saw fit to comment I may reach the same conclusions. As it stands you may have found me harsh... others would have banned him for his activities, the Tidemaster yet may. He is young with much to learn,... these days have been hard lessons for him but there is no permanent damage done and at heart he remains a son of the Free Cities."

She looked down at her notes. "On other points..."I was interested in your ideas about Alexandria being re-formed.... it is a cause you professed to sincerely and whole heartedly support - unteresting - Particularly given that you recommend that I agree to a treaty prioritising the lands of what currently stands as Alexandria for return to the state if at some point in some amalgous future it comes to be.... Then suggest that I should commit to this because you think the likelihood of Alexandria coming back is slim to none.... how very supportive of you.

Now I agree that Alexandria is in a position from which it would be hard to return, but if you consider Eponllyn herself. In very recent history we were a realm of seven nobles, now we are twenty. Realms can come back from the brink, but it is a lot harder to do so when you have no lands to start around. As I said what we offer is a recognition and celebration of the independent culture of the Alexandrians, centering around Kalmar. Knowing a state can come back from seven to twenty, I know that the culture of the tyranny may yet arise.... lands and some structures of government will make this far easier. As you know Kalmar will go on the primacy cycle of capitals so will have opportunities to set the realms agenda and the growth that comes with the city being the capital of the realm.

Now to another interesting argument you made.... you feel an influx of nobles will level up the continent.... I am quite aware that your ally believes Eponllyn will become some super power if we are joined by the Alexandrians, but really? If all six were to join us we would have twenty six nobles... the same number as currently reside in Perdan and less than in Shadowdale. We are currently only two nobles more than you in Caligus, so how would an exodus of Alexandrians to Caligus bring balance? - indeed would it not infact lead to imbalance in that your alliance block would stand at fifty instead of forty-four.... in fact if all of the Alexandrians were to join us, we would have at that time an alliance block of forty-five, surely this infact 'evens up' the powers on the continent far better than your own suggestion?"

She twisted the stem of her goblet. Turning to address the Tidemaster. "As I have said. I will offer only what I can guarantee.... without need of consent of other nations, or indeed any major demands on yourself or your people.

You join and engage with the Free Cities. You, or whomever you suggest as Duke of the Alexandrian Duchy, takes a permanent seat in council to represent the views and needs of your regions. Lords in lands of your Duchy will be appointed by the Duke of Alexandria. Kalmar enters the capital cycle and her Duke acts as Viceroy during the Kalmar primacy. The people of Alexandria who choose to join the Free Cities will be eligible from day one to run in elections for any governement position, including that of ruler. If and when you have the nobles interested in once again becoming an independent state of Alexandria, you will be supported on your journey to independence in the hopes that we will yet remain friends.

There is no more... unless you have questions?" She sank back in the well upholstered chair rolling her pencil under her finger.

Pasquale remained seated, very close to the Chief Justice Aila, much closer than he had been before he paced and spoke before. He quietly pondered Queen Lorelai’s words. Once he marshaled his thoughts and decided on a course of action and how he would express it, he took a deep breath, and began to speak, but remained seated this time.

“As for the comment I made about young Vladimir, you are indeed right, I made a hasty judgment on a very limited interaction. I apologize for the criticism that I made by describing the treatment you three gave as “harsh”. Your point about me making an assumption is correct. And that apology is directed at all three of you.” He inclined his head to each of the three in the room, Queen Lorelai, Tidemaster Cayden, and Chief Justice Aila, who no longer seemed to regard him with the same look he saw minutes ago.

Pasquale continued, saying, “However I am clearly not the only person making assumptions here: you yourself presume two things that are incorrect. Firstly, I have not spoken nor written to Queen Alyssa once about the proceedings here. So I do not know of her views about what may become of Eponllyn if Alexandria joins your Primacy. I am my own man, a King among his people, and I do not need an ally to commune with to ascertain the best course to take. I do what I think is right for my realm, and then for the continent after that.”

“The second point in which you have made a error of assumption on is that I wish for all of the people of Alexandria to remain together. I believe I specifically said during my last turn at speaking that they be free to go wherever they wish during their exile. In fact, if they truly wish to bring their sovereign existence back to life, they would disperse themselves among multiple realms, giving themselves the greatest chance to gather more supporters to reform their country.”

“As for your point about numbers of nobles, I am not entirely sure what an alliance block is. I have never heard the term before. Yes Perdan is important to me as ally at this moment in time, but that may not always be so. You seem to believe that realm alliances cannot shift. I question that, especially since after such a momentous event as the dissolution of Alexandria, there will no longer be an even number of realms, and someone must be left out in the cold, with no ally to shield them. I surely believe there will some shakeup following whatever course of action occurs. Additionally, my previous point about all of the Alexandrians not going to the same realm, certainly should assuage any concerns you have here. They will be more likely to reform their realm if they split up. There would be more chances for them to gather supporters that way.”

“Finally, to solidify their chances of reforming, and to stay in connection with one another, I propose the formation of a guild to reestablish the existence of the realm of Alexandria. I was but a babe when this happened, but I have read about the events of the founding of Alexandria, and the guild of the Sharpscree Expedition that led to its founding. The use of a similar guild would help ensure that these people remain in contact with each other and continue to work towards the reformation of their land.”

“I do not mean to cause consternation with this proposal, just wishing to offer it as a way to the people of Alexandria to preserve their culture and to have hope that one day they may be reunited in sovereignty again. Hope and visions for the future can motivate many a man or woman, prompting them to do great things that they might not otherwise attempt. I yield the floor to whoever wishes to speak.” Pasquale leaned confidently forward in his chair, hopeful that this offer that he had espoused could gain some traction in the room.

She shook her head slowly. "High King, I haven't at any stage suggested the abandonment of Alexandrian culture. As I have said repeatedly the maintenance of that culture would be actively encouraged and the government would recognise the different voice within council.

There has never been any suggestion of absorption and assimilation, indeed with a decent number of Alexandrian nobles, yet working together, I would expect that the maintenance of their culture would be far easier to achieve than if they were spread more thinly across the continent. We are offering them the focal point of their capital - the opportunity to set the agenda for the entire nation during the city's primacy... as to guilds and whatnot, any Lord can make a guild at any point. What land are you going to give to the Alexandrians that they may build this guildhouse? If you are suggesting they found it now then abandon the city.... whose responsibility will it be to maintain the guildhouse, how will they recruit new members.... or do you suggest you give yourself oversight by building a guild for them in your own land?

As to your notes on alliance blocks... Alexandria hasn't been allied to anyone as far as I can remember, Yssrgard prefers not to ally, unless it suits their desires for war. Perleone and Shadowdale have been allied for a very long time.... as have Eponllyn and Sirion. Your own alliance with Perdan is many years old. So this dynamic shifting of blocks.... I haven't seen it and if you are honest neither have you.

Pragmatically speaking if Eponllyn were to accept Kalmar as one of the Free Cities we would need at least four of the Alexandrians to accompany it. Realistically we need to reestablish the land bridge between Kalmar and the central homelands at Lundel.... being north of the river, I would envisage Lundel being part of a future Alexandrian Duchy. I am aware that we operate under density currently, but we need similarly to reestablish the land bridge to Ashforth at Oberndorf, something that would already have been addressed were I not so heavily engaged here."

She shrugged, "Nobody is forcing the Alexandrians to stay together... they may well disperse, indeed there are already ex Alexandrians in Shadowdale, Perdan, Yssrgard and the Free Cities... perhaps Caligus too, I don't know... however, if you seek to preserve a culture and an ideal, it is better to have land to base it around and the more people you have to actively work together to maintain and further that culture makes life much easier and furthers goals. Smaller groups in a multitude of realms are far more likely to forget their roots and simply become nobles of wherever. Shared culture and land is what binds a nation, with the best will in the world you can't offer that High King, neither indeed can I, but I can offer the opportunity to make it a possibility for the Alexandrians to do it for themselves. We in the Free Cities are a nation of exiles, can anywhere on the continent truly be more suited to host the Alexandrians and offer the fertile ground in which their culture may once again flourish?" She tapped her paper, turning her eyes back to the Tidemaster.

Just as Queen Lorelai finished her retort at the High King, a servant entered the chamber.

"Announcing the arrival of Ser Jericho Gadwel, Knight of Mulhouse and representative of Perdan." The servant took a deep bow before exiting the room. In his place, entered Ser Gadwel.

"Queen Lorelai." He pauses for a second to offer a light bow. Before turning to address the room. "Forgive my late interruption, it seems my Alexandrian contact had already left the realm by the point of my arrival." He turned back to the Queen of Eponllyn.

"I could not help but overhear a small bit of your discussion with the High King." Jericho turns to the King and gives a similar, light bow before turning back to Queen Lorelai. "on my way into the chamber I believe I caught that you are of the opinion that the Alexandrians are without allies, and that the current state of alliances between the realms is stagnant and will remain such, correct me If this is not true."

Jericho turned his direction now to the High King. "While I certainly hope Perdan and Caligus see peace for years to come, I tend to agree that alliances are a much more fluid thing, shaped out of necessity and desire." Jericho turned to address no one in particular. "I also come to offer the support of Perdan to the nobles of Alexandria with Queen Alyssa's blessing in any efforts to salvage and stabilize Alexandria."

"While I'm sure much deliberation has already occurred on the topic, I at least can remove the veil of ambiguity concerning any intentions of Perdan.

Aila remains seated, sipping from her cup of wine and wondering how many cups she had at this point after so long sitting and listening to rulers converse. Pasquale attempts to parlay her Queen Lorelai, but in the end makes a weal argument to Aila’s ears. Still, she keeps a polite face on and even smiles sweetly at him as he leans so confidently forward in his chair. This High King is young, and she can sense how many advisors and voices must have been knocking around in his head. She felt bad in a way, wishing she could take him aside and give advice but in the end she was here for her people, Eponllyn, and her council was saved for Lorelai alone.

Shortly after her kind smile Lorelai rebukes him as he deserves, and Aila is left staring down at the liquid in her cup listening and attempting not to say anything though she did want to. They were a misunderstood realm to be sure, but that was to be expected. Each of them had rivals jealous of them, afraid of them, spies sent her letters to her enemies the same as her enemies had spies sending letters to her. The place they had built for themselves was not /just/ built for themselves… It is an opportunity for everyone.

But Lorelai makes her point beautifully without her, and it is through a sip of wine Aila spies a servant side-stepping into the room with them. “Uh-oh” The Duchess sighs, nodding toward the door to gain Cayden’s attention knowing it would anger the man who moments ago cleared the room.

A man of Perdan steps through the door and Aila leans forward with interest, copying Pasquales posture to observe Alyssa’s new Ambassador. Aila’s replacement, Kenneth’s replacement. A comely and young man, pale of skin with steely eyes. He reveals at once that he has been eavesdropping, winning a laugh from the Duchess who balked at Lorelai in disbelief at the man's words as he comments on the conversation of Rulers without invitation. Ambassador he may be, but the man's manners were left somewhere in the gutters of her old City to be sure.

As he comments on clearing up the intentions of Perdan Aila has had enough, standing from her seat to pace in the cat-like way she was so known; Because it usually marks the last moment before she starts throwing objects. She can feel the room's eyes on her, a sensation that made most uncomfortable fueled her even further. “Tell your Queen it is too little far too late, as ALWAYS” A fistful of decorative flowers comes up with the vase she intends to chuck across the room, but her Queen catches it from her grasp and lays it back on the table with a look of angry warning instead.

"You would be joining us as a 'Free City', if your culture was thriving to the point where you were ready to stand alone again, so be it. The Free Cities are governed to work as a celebration of the diversity of the exile nations we represent. We do that with the tacit consent of those there present.

The process of independence would be an evolution within your Duchy that would be supported as it happened. We would hope that evolution would lead to a pair of nations with strong bonds of friendship and understanding of one another's cultural moreys."

She had come here to transfer a city back to its home nation... to see a statue to her horse unveiled. Now she had struggled with the actions of an inexperienced noble and had been ambushed by the High King of Caligus. After these tumulus she had some noble she had never seen or heard of, seeming to know exactly who she was and seeing fit to address a room of rulers without so much as an introduction or announcement - other than his own words. She'd heard Lucius describing clowns... there were no clowns, but it was somewhat of a circus.

Jericho watched Aila calmly, standing by the entrance, as she raised the fist of flowers.

A temper so fragile in a chief justice, No wonder peace talks with Eponllyn have been unfruitful. Now I realize the stories of the Queen and her court may have been put too lightly to me.

Jericho took the seat offered by the Tidemaster, apologizing once again for the interruption. He sat quiet and attentive as Lorelai elaborated her position. When she had finished her piece Jericho looked around the circle before slowly standing up in place with his hands on the table. He looked towards the Tidemaster and said:

"Should a future reformation of Alexandria occur, Perdan will be there to assist in reformation efforts, whatever obstacles may exist at that time." He briefly looked over at Queen Lorelai before sitting back in his chair.

Would this Queen stand in the way of a reformation? The way she speaks of independence and the principles of the Free City don't sound disingenuous to me, hell it reminds me of Queen Alyssa speaking of Perdan. Regardless what was clear, is that Queen Alyssa had left many details out about what my mission to Alexandria would entail.

"Tidemaster, High King, Sir Jericho, I cannot imagine there is much more I can add here. The time has come that the conversations perhaps need to be had amongst the Alexandrians. You have three options, it would seem.

As Perdan suggests, continue in hopes that you will attract a new wave of nobles that make your realm viable once more. A difficult path, but as Eponllyns resurgence shows, not impossible. If you want to tarry in this manner, we will continue to provide food to feed Kalmar as you consider how best you might expand to self sufficiency again.

As we have offered you could keep Kalmar and move to be part of the Free Cities. You would have your city; your Duke; a seat on council and the prospect of your city being the prime of Eponllyn thereby directing policy and showcasing your culture. It is a good way to maintain your culture and the ownership of Kalmar as the city from which you might once again grow. Should you reach a point you might have numbers and wish to again be independent, we would help you do this. As a plan it has many positives, however we would need at least four, preferably more of the Alexandrian nobility to join us so that we could maintain the city and join it through. Lestham to the rest of the Free Cities.

Finally Claigus suggests you might disperse, preferably to Caligus and use the spread of the nobles to try and find others who might want to coalesce. That you may one day re-establish a nation back in the Obsidian Isles. The Caligans also suggest that foreign rulers should commit to treaties that will return lands once owned by Alexandria to them if they have the nobles to establish a realm again. I have been frank on this. Personally I would not sign to such a treaty... I would not tie my successors to give up lands we may hold to a realm which by this plan would entirely cease to exist. The caveat here is ofcourse that the Free cities have no current plans to take Kalmar if she indeed becomes a rogue city.... that does not though say things may change in the future. The High King suggests this is me destroying the realm of Alexandria. It is not. Alexandria holding no lands and having a fully dispersed nobility would in truth destroy the realm. My own position regarding a treaty with a state that no longer exists is entirely based on pragmatic realism."

Reaching for her glass, she looked at it and pushed it away feeling mildly nauseated in the increasingly warm room. "Ironic that the realm criticised in the quiet corridors is yet proposed to be involved in all three of these outcomes. In Perdans plans we continue to feed your city. In Caligus plans we should commit to recognise claims to the Alexandrian lands by treaty, even if we have come to own some of those lands. And in our own plan, we work with you to preserve Alexandria as both lands and culture so that she has the opportunity to one day rise again.

I find myself wondering what more there could be?

Tidemaster, I would like very much to get out of this room and to see the statue you were building of Noble Fat Bastard. If there is nothing more I wonder if you might show me?"

Towards the end of Queen Lorelai's summary speech, Pasquale noticed the surprising heat in the room. No doubt a consequence of the land of the structure that they were in was literally built upon volcanic and magma-born ground. The young High King of Caligus stood up, just as the Eponllynese Queen finished speaking. Pasquale had entered in the early afternoon, and now they were deep into the evening. Furthermore, he had joined the discussion at a later time, and could not imagine how tiresome the others had grown. Deciding that he needed some fresh air, and also wanting to cool down the room, Pasquale strode over to the a door that led out onto a wrap-around balcony deck that seemed to connect to other parts of this building. Pausing, he turned and addressed everyone else in the room, providing each with a personal parting comment.

"Queen Lorelai Chamberlain, your grace and strength character are legendary, and I have seen both and more out of you during these discussions. It has been indeed been my honor to make your acquaintance on this day, despite the auspicious circumstances. Hopefully, this will not be the last time that we meet, and I believe we both have much to offer the world and our peoples, were we to put our heads together and collaborate. Alas, in this instance, we seem opposed, but I pray that it may not always be so. I know that any situation in which we could combine our efforts would result in a formidable coalition. I hope that you feel the same, and do not hold ill will that my arguments went against yours today." The High King nodded towards her respectfully, keeping an even face.

Turning to the great bear of a man standing next to the table, Pasquale smiled a bit, and gave the same respectful nod to Cayden Navaar. "Tidemaster, you clearly have compassion and care for those under you, whether they be nobles, church devotees, or even peasants. Someone who has both iron will and the knowledge and consideration of when and when not to use it, that is rare: I foresee that no matter what decision you choose, it will be the best one for your people. I know what I hope for, but even moreso, I know that you will be a great driver of change, whatever you do. Please keep my offer for you and your people in mind, and although I hope it not need reminding, in your hour of crisis, only two leaders came to visit your peoples: she of your nearest neighbor," here Pasquale brought his hands a far distance apart, "and myself, a near stranger at first, but hopefully, something more now." He brought his hands together at this, to symbolize the sentiment.

Speaking now to the second, smaller woman seated at the table, he addressed Aila, the judge from Eponllyn. "Chief Justice Aila, you have served your Queen honorable and capably, with both conventional and.....unorthodox methods. But sometimes leaders become entrenched and entwined in political and diplomatic positions, and become unable to act. Without agents such as you, to make and allow them to act, the world would be a very different place, much worse: stagnant, immoblile, and boring. I would actually like to speak with you, if you wouldn't mind accompanying me after this group disperses for the evening. Unless, of course, your Queen has prior assignments for your, or if you would rather retire for the evening. I hope that is not the case though." He flashed a slight smile, hopeful that it would help in his request.

Not to forget the only non-governmental member in the room, Pasquale turned to the lean blond man with the serious demeanor. "Knight Jericho, I feel that Queen Alyssa did well to send an attaché to observe and weigh-in on events as they proceeded, and you seem to be a good man for the job. Unfortunately, I think this conference is drawing to a close, so depending on what happens next, and in the near-future, you may be heading home soon. Feel free to send me letters, if you wish to continue as a stand-in ambassador for Perdan. My diplomatic channels are always open, especially to that of an ally. Your service here to your Queen will likely not go unnoticed. I predict a bright future ahead for you sir-knight. Please give Queen Alyssa my warm regards when you speak to her next, if you would."

The finely-dressed king drew his cloak part-way about himself, as he placed his hand upon the latch to the door that led to the balcony. "Farewell to you all, this afternoon and evening have been quite.....enlightening." Opening the door now, a stiff late-autumn breeze whipped around the room, and the youthful man stepped out, and closed the door behind him, before walking over to the banister that looked out over the sulfuric and barren landscape. Far off in the distance, silhouetting the king, a volcano continued to slowly spew magma out, mirroring the simmering tensions that remained among this council.

Things seemed to be simmering down, Aila included as Lorelai and Cayden cover over her outburst with pleasantries about a vase. She is reduced to sitting with her arms folded defiantly as the Perdanese ambassador speaks again and does not budge from that posture until spoken to by the High King of Caligus. He has won a smile from the prickly Duchess who glances at her Queen for approval after he asks if she has any time at all to spend with him. Then to save her from answering in front of everyone else moves on and leaves the scene in a manner which she wished she had thought of first. Aila would linger there and leave with Lorelai considering her courses of action from here, but afterward…Who knows.

Jericho bowed his head humbly as the High King spoke to him.

"Aye sir, I will send my Queen your regards. Thank you for your kind words, I only wish I had arrived sooner. It is truly a gift to witness so many great minds from the continent in a room together, even if only briefly."

Jericho stood to give a proper bow to the High King before similarly turning to the Tidemaster and Queen Lorelai in turn making his farewell.

"Tidemaster, Queen, it has been an honor to meet both you, I pray that our next meeting bears the opportunity of a proper, formal introduction." Jericho gives a genuine half smile to the room before nodding to himself, standing in place. ".....Right!" He quickly makes his way out the room.

Exiting out into the streets, Captain Volkhard is waiting for him. The setting sun of the golden hour makes Jericho's face glisten with the beads of sweat that have accumulated. His breathing speeds into a rapid, sporadic pattern as his eyes dart left and right without focus. His right hand clenches towards his chest as his knees begin to sway and buckle. Just as Jericho loses his balance, Wilfried Volkhard is under his arm to catch his weight, holding him upright. Wilfried drags Jericho, whose feet barely scrape on the floor as his jelly legs attempt to step, off out of view and brings a rag across Jericho's forehead, which at this point is freezing to the touch and drenched in the young nobles sweat.

"Come on Jericho... its time to go home."

Jericho looks at his friend with terror in his eyes. His lips move but he is unable to get any words out, instead only the subtle sound of his teeth nervously clattering together come out. His body begins to shake and shiver but he manages to shake his head in agreement.

Wilfried lets out an empathetic sigh

"You did good.... lets go." The two walk off to regroup with their men and make their way back home.

Aila stood by her dutifully and beautifully. With a half smile she turned to her sister. "If you have the energy for it, I would be grateful if you would prepare the retinue for the return in the morning."

She was about to turn to the Tidemaster but noted the young Perdanite staggering against one of his men as he left. Swiftly she put herself on his right arm. He looked shocked and nauseated. "A Queen should not be without escort Sir Jericho, I wonder if I might take your arm." In truth he was leaning heavily on her. His man, seemingly practiced in such support, was inobtrusively at his other side.

It would not do for the hoi polloi to see a young noble representing his Queen staggering from the Palace. "I have rooms nearby, I insist that you join me for some refreshments, I would hear all that is happening in Perdan."

Castor was readying her horse. "Can.... ah.... do you ride Sir Jericho?" His palor made her decision a swift one. "Castor, hail us a carriage... I would continue my discussion with Sir Jericho." Castor eyed the man doubtfully but went to see her will done. She locked eyes with Jericho's man, for his part he looked distinctly uncomfortable and a little bewildered. Lorelai brought them to a short wall by the Gatehouse guiding the young man to sit by her.

She chatted blithely to distract any onlookers from the state of the young knight. "I had hoped to leave for the homelands thus evening, but I yet hope to see a statue the Tidemaster commissioned of my horse."

The carriage came mercifully quickly and she saw the young man in before following herself. As it began to move she opened the shutters to let the air in. "Are you quite well Sir Jericho?"

Though clearly uncomfortable with the ordeal, Captain Volkhard acquiesced to the Queen's assistance silently. He remained close to Jericho's side but didn't dare speak a word. He was a few years older than Jericho, a few inches taller, and quite a few pounds heavier. His dark skin was rough but his eyes were a clear, delicate silver. He clung to Jericho like a brother.

By the time the carriage had arrived the Queen could see an improvement in the young knight's condition. His breathing had slowed quite a bit and his pupils focused on faces. His body temperature had returned though he looked soaked from sweat. Jericho strung short sentences together between heavy, labored breaths.

"Queen you are... far too kind..... I'm fine....... really I just...... need to catch......" Jericho rolled his hand in front of his mouth as if to pantomime the last words of his sentence as he inhaled deeply.

The Queen was likely not unfamiliar with this phenomena. A result of nerves, the consequence of noble duty and responsibility. This young knight was just a boy, even younger than he looked. Certainly green to the life of nobility and not adjusted to the weight of it.

The other though, the captain.... Wilfried Volkhard. Something about this young man radiates wisdom. His eyes show the experience of a well-traveled elder and his body the physical refinement of a miner. He is no noble, that is certain, and yet the way he carries Jericho, he appears born for the role.

"Are you quite well Sir Jericho?"

Jericho's breathing has become slow, deep, mouth-breaths. His face returned to a still calmness.

"I am my lady, thank you. I am sorry I just... got so faint all of sudden, it must be the heat you know. I'm much used to life in Mulhouse."

He lets out a final long breath before allowing his breathing to return to normal

"This is actually my first trip out of Perdan."

Wilfried watched Jericho quietly.

The carriage rocked to a stop at a town house that Vladimir had sequestered for her. The young Perdanite just looked a little embarrassed as he admitted to his naivete of the world beyond Perdan.

In truth, she almost envied him.

"Come gentlemen, you will join me for tea." She was Queen of the Free Cities, and though Kalmar was not within her jurisdiction her words still carried the weight of her station.

She strode straight through hall and salon to reach a paved seating area in a walled garden. Sunset was setting the clouds aflame with a vivid orange iridescence that was mirrored by the far off magma flows that yet burned with enough vigor to give even night in Kalmar a preternatural glow. She motioned for the men to sit.

"Mulhouse was a rogue state when I left the academies." One of the Kalmari servants had brought a tray with a steaming glass vessel of apple tea and some of the local dainties. Shooing the server, she poured the steaming spiced drink into glasses, pushing one in Jericho's direction. "It smells a little odd, but you will find it refreshing," she reassured him.

Sitting back in the chair she favoured him eith a warm smile. "I was a Vice Marshal in King Kays army when we raised Perdans banners over the region.... it was quite the beautiful place.

For myself, my father was a bit of a nomad on Dwilight always moving around. Staying at my Grandmother's bower and then in the academy of Aix is the longest time I spent anywhere." The tray of dainties was largely occupied by pastries and sweets, however she found a small pile of salted crackers, taking one she took a small bite absently.

"You were brave to take this assignment. I'm not sure I would have been up to meeting three of the eight crowns of the East Continent in one afternoon. Particularly the woman your Queen has decided to paint as her enemy." She took a sip of the tea, it was too hot to drink quickly, but the heady sweetness of the brew was yet refreshing. She turned back to the servant. "Could you ask the Mother of Oligarch to come down?"

Pushing the plate of dainties toward the two men she continued. "Anyway, tell me about yourself Sir Jericho, and if you know anything of my old friends Delphine or Daario?"

"Let us go see your statue, Queen Lorelai."

As the leaders and representatives departed the confines of the room, Cayden lead the way out to the artists guild, not far from the Great Library of Alexandria where he made his home. The heat of the volcano seemed to be in full force this day as he could feel the pressure of it as soon as they stepped outside.

The streets of Kalmar showed little sign of disruption as the people went about their business, not a care for who was at the top so long as they could eat and keep their lives as they were. A simple retinue formed around them, with Cayden's assurance they wouldn't need much. The streets were filled with followers of the Aspects and he would talk to many in passing long before he ever became a ruler. A kind wave here, a nod there. Vendors he once frequented as just a priest all seemed to acknowledge their faith leader.

When they finally reached the artist's guild, Cayden gestured to the Queen and her guards to go on ahead. "I'll have it moved to the dedication spot for tomorrow morning, but why not get a look now to make sure you are satisfied with it?"

As he is about to follow the Queen inside, a single messenger comes up to Cayden and passes him a letter. He ushers the man along, opening it as the Queen gets a few moments to look around. He glanced over the contents and his pulse quickened slightly. He tried not to show a change of emotion as he tucked the letter into a pocket and chuckled with a deep laugh. "About time I got the response I was waiting for. Well Queen Lorelai, what has your impression of Kalmar been thus far? We may be working together soon," he commented nonchalantly as if the last grueling meeting hadn't happened.

"Well ... my mistake... I should say it is my first trip out of Perdan on official business, you know... not including tournaments." The young knight quickly corrected himself.

OOC: a slip of the mind on my last post sorry.

By the time the carriage stopped, Jericho was feeling much more of himself. Wilfried had given Jericho his rag to wipe the remainder of the sweat from his face but remained silent. Looking at Jericho with each of the Queen's words to determine the young knight's reactions.

Wilfried sat at the Queen's gesture though Jericho was distracted, eyes into the sky bewildered by the glowing horizons. It was then that Wilfried spoke his first word in front of Queen Lorelai.

"Sir..." Jericho looked back at Wilfried, then up at the queen who had her hand out gesturing towards a chair. She gave a light smile with raised eyebrows when the young knight made eye contact again with her.

"Oh yes! sorry! I just... I mean wow, you don't get sunsets like this in Mulhouse that's for sure." The young knight had a clear appreciation for natural beauty. He took a seat and sipped his tea without hesitation, making an unsubtle expression as the scent hits his nostrils. Wilfried on the other hand sipped his tea slowly, without surprise.

Jericho listened with genuine interest as the Queen recounted her time at the Academy and under rule of King Kay. "I had no idea you part of Perdan gaining control of Mulhouse. I must have just been a child."

Though something distracted the young knight when the Queen spoke of her father. She could see it in his eyes, the moment she said the word, the knight's mind had receded inward, to the past. His expression fell back to the stern mask he wore in the Tidemaster's chamber as his eyes glazed over.

Wilfried looked over at Jericho then cleared his throat and reached forward for a round, frosted pastry. "Ah you know I guess I just can't resist." The captain clumsily elbows Jericho's arm has he brings the pastry toward himself.

The nudge was enough to snap Jericho back into the moment. Noting the brief disturbance but being wise enough not to push too far the Queen changed the topic.

Jericho was mid sip as the Queen finished her sentence. The words surprised Jericho and cause him to spit some of the tea back into his cup mid-sip. The Queen smiled to herself as she continued on while the young knight quickly wiped the mess he made from the table.

"Anyway, tell me about yourself Sir Jericho, and if you know anything of my old friends Delphine or Daario?"

Jericho started answering even before finishing his impromptu table-cleaning.

"Oh my lady, I've not lived a life of interest to Queen. I spent my whole life in Mulhouse, living a simple, rural life. I couldn't imagine I'd have stories you'd want to hear unless you need seek a lullaby to put you to sleep." Jericho lets out a small chuckle, Wilfried smiles.

"As for Lady Delphine and Sir Daario, I've unfortunately not yet had to opportunity to formally meet them in person though I've heard of some of their accomplishments. With the recent tournament in Perdan, plus their own responsibilities and duties, I haven't found a time to really get to know either of them personally though I do greatly look forward to doing so in the near future. Lady Delphine after-all is the founder the Golden Dawn is she not? The most righteous cause on the continent.

Jericho leans to the side and holds his green cape out of the way to reveal a sheathed dagger in the back center of his waist.

"It is a cause I have pledged myself to, and in truth my lady... I wasn't exactly expecting three crowns.""

The humble self depreciation of his words gave her pause. Breath catching in her throat.... had not Jacelyn said something so similar when she asked him about the Goldwater. "I think I am with child again..." the words fell from her lips unbidden as she cast her eyes to the far off fire fields. "Sorry, I don't know why I said that," she shook her head, "just a feeling."

She turned back to him. "There is no life truly devoid of interest... something has led you to offer your oaths, to stand as a knight of the gre- Queen." She picked up one of the pastries, dropping it back on her plate. "You must have made quite the impression on Alyssa to represent her interests abroad. - I would invite you to accompany me back to the homelands, but with the sate of our diplomacy an over zealous knight might cause an incident, and I would not see you hurt."

Mother Ollie breezed out into the courtyard with Nylucia in her wake. The little girl had striking features, the curling blonde hair and bright eyes a throwback to her grandmother more than her mothers dark hair and skin. "Mother!" She called, bowling into her legs and then accepting her mothers assistance up onto her lap. A brief hug and the girl turned back to the plates reaching for a pastry.

"This is one of the greybeards men.... Sir Jericho." She commended the young knight to her daughter. "And this is my daughter, Nylucia of Oligarch." She smiled with a mother's pride as she introduced her daughter to the Perdanite. Turning her eyes to the old woman she continued. "And this is the Mother of Oligarch, an Ora'n Maunt... she is skilled in many things.... Sir Jericho, was a little.... afflicted after our meeting this evening."

Mother Ollie held up a finger, smile creasing her ancient face in understanding. She rummaged briefly in one of the pouches at her belt producing a grey root. "Marsh wort root, snap a little off and chew it... your legs and your head remain your own. Don't have so much of it but you can have what I have Sir knight. Forgive my interruption, but the Tidemaster has asked that you join him at the art studios."

"Forgive me Sir Jericho, it appears I need to be elsewhere.... it is Mother Ollie I truly wanted you to meet if I am honest." She indicated the root on the table. "I was not always a Queen, there were times I too benefited from something to restore resolve after a more - challenging encounter." She turned back to the old woman. "Ensure all hospitality is offered."

As she turned to leave Ollie grinned, "As if you needed to tell me that?" The old woman chided pouring more of the spiced apple tea.

In Kalmar - The Artists Studio

Caydens height and stature saw him set a pace that threatened to have her at a half run, or making bizarrely elongated strides herself as she tried to keep pace with him. For once she was pleased to be wearing a gown, doing her best to be swan-like, her upper body a picture of calm and poise while legs pumped furiously to keep pace.

He was a generous guide, offering information and insight as they moved toward the studio. His words melted into the background as she found herself standing before the obsidian statue.

Considering it was unlikely the artists had seen her horse, the likeness took her breath away. A fierce realism and unnerving intellect to carved eyes saw her hand reaching out to touch it before as quickly drawing back, remembering this was infact an artifact.

"It's magnificent..." she turned back to him, allowing his words to filter back into her mind. She smiled up at him. "Kalmar has been an education.... I haven't been here since it was civilised, unless you consider railing at the walls of the city when it yet belonged to Nivemus.... As a rogue city I could not imagine it becoming as it is now.

Things develop again so quickly, as the spirits of men rise, so do the walls and plazas. And what a natural wonder ot is seeing the play of the fire fields from the lava flows of the Mount of Chaos. It is unsurprising that you found yourself drawn to the flames.

I remain Ora'n.... I suppose you would call me pagan following the ancient faith of the Goddess of the Northern Woods.... Kalmar has always inspired faith, as I recall it was a home of the Ora'n Dagda witches.

I have enjoyed working with you Tidemaster, if destiny - and believe me I count nothing delivered until it is so - is to have us working together in the future, I think we will both have interesting times.... who can truly ask for more than interesting times in this

In Kalmar - Lorelai and Jericho

Jericho froze in place with the teacup to his lips when the Queen bluntly declared her potential pregnancy. That is, all except his eyes which turned from steamy liquid in his cup up to Lorelai with an almost dumbfounded expression.

Clearing his throat and returning what little was still left in his teacup back to the table Jericho felt an instinctual embarrassment when the Queen suggested his life was of interest. In that moment she reminded him of Wilfried. Jericho imagined about what accompanying Queen Lorelai to Eponllyn would be like. More specifically, he imagined what Eponllyn would be like. He had become a noble of Perdan less than a year ago and he had already seen more of the world than in his entire life before. His daydream was grounded at the reminder of Perdan and Eponllyn's current diplomatic position.

"It is a shame, you know I would love to hear your position on why our realms are in the states they are." Just as Jericho began to ask Mother Ollie and Nylucia entered the couryard. "Perhaps now is not the best time though."

Jericho took the small root from the older woman and gave it a sniff while she informed the Queen of her royal summons.

Standing and placing his right fist onto his chest Jericho gave the Queen a deep departing bow. "Queen Lorelai, it was an honor meeting you. Thank you again. I hope to meet again soon and perhaps we can discuss better days, when a knight like myself may walk without fear in Eponllyn."

Once the Queen had left, Jericho turned his attention back to the root in his hands. He took a look over at Wilfried who had Nylucia occupied with a game of peak-a-boo. The captain briefly looked back at Jericho before giving him a reassuring nod. Jericho cracked the root in half, bit a small piece of one half and handed the other half back to the kind older woman.

"Thank you Mother Ollie." Jericho began to chew the root and what small lingering headache remained slowly faded.

"Marsh Wort Root? I guess that grows in Marshes?" Jericho half a smile.

Wilfried stood up and leaned in close to Jericho's ear. He spoke softly, though this was his natural way of speaking, he did not make much of an effort to remain unheard when he told Jericho.

"We best update the Queen." Without a word Wilfried turned to Mother Ollie and said "I'm sorry I have a message I must send, thank you for the tea." Before walking out the room.

Jericho turned back to Ollie

"Hey so... what did she mean when she said 'one of greybeards men' ? "
