Here in the mortal plane we find what we call the Lesser Spirits. The word might not be the most appropriate one, for they have very little of "less", besides sharing a mortal and a spiritual form. They can be something as simple as the shinning of a metal to something as complex, powerful and wise as the being you call Bamaluu. Unlike the other two categories, their power can be significantly increased should men give up theirs in their benefit, and the most powerful of them are often worshiped as gods. Dealing with them requires very a high spiritual connection and sensibility, and few are those who can even notice them, much less communicate with them. To those who have mastered the arts of transcendence they can be seen everywhere: plaguing cattle and men alike as illnesses, fertilizing the land and ensuring good harvests as rain, simply being, as dust in the wind, or commanding major forces of the world, strongly and brutally as a hurricane or solidly and persistently, as a grand mountain.

There are many aspects in life we take for granted. We rarely wonder why the wind blows, the fire burns and the raindrops wet. And, yet, it could be different, as there are times without wind and substances that do not burn or get wet. By observation we see the repetition of such events and safely conclude there are reasons behind them, not merely chance. The answer, you see, lays on the Spirits.

Everything surrounding us has what we could call a double nature. There is what is apparent to the eye, and there are things that are more subtly hidden, yet not completely concealed for those who care to watch. Any particle you can think of is imbued with a "substance" we call flamma, which gives it motion, purpose and life. The flammae make up the Spirits, complex entities which act and interact between themselves. Not every Spirit is equally compatible with each other, and for such reason we see fire having violent reactions towards flesh, extinguishing itself in enough earth or water, and growing with the right amount of coal and wood. What we see is the Spirits that make up such substances interacting with each other. As men they have preferences and hatreds which can be foreseen to a certain extent. Aetheris Pyrism dedicates itself, among other things, to the careful study of such phenomena, as to better understand the world around us.

And this just a small portion of what exists out there. The simple Spirits and interactions we can have with them are not the only ones. There are far more complex beings that populate the world all around us, with who, using the right means, we can communicate and deal with. They may grow or wither fruits, poison or relieve men, rot or strengthen flesh, and much more. By performing the right ceremonies and sacrifices we can cast an influence on their wills, and improve our surroundings. And all this without mentioning the Higher Spirits who watch and guide us from Above. But such is a matter for a different time.
