Alas, this was not to be. After a terrible defeat in Sauvia, he was taken by surprise by a one-man rebellion. The traitor Caliber Solo rose up against the legitimate government of Drachenwald. True to their duty, most of Drachenwald’s nobles joined the loyalists. In the end, Caliber commanded only 40 infantry, with the rest of Drachenwald’s armies siding with Dictator Gilead. Both of the realm’s infiltrators also joined the Loyal army, and one managed to wound Caliber.

After a short time in the realm, he recived word from his brother that the family's quest for the greatest sword ever made on Atamara once again had a trail. Seeking it, he sailed to Mesh on Belluterra. Proving himself to be adept in combat, he served first as Marshall of Twillen, and then as the Marquis of Hoelorr.

===The Journey from the Colonies===

The Outskirts of Oritolon, Dusk:

Quickly, recklessly, the dark figure crashes through the bushes into Roland's camp. Wild-eyed and out of breath, the figure hardly keeps upright as he begins to sprint towards my seat by the fire.

Surprised, I jump to my feet, and my sword jumps to my hand.

"ROLAND OCCAM! I HAVE FOUND YOU!" the figure emits a bloodcurdling yell. Now mere feet away, I ready my blade for the impending battle.

The dark clothed man abruptly stops. After a tense moment, the  man slowly tips over, ending his fall face down in the dirt. Four arrows are visible buried deep within his back.

Confused (I have no archers guarding my camp), I looked over the body. The would-be assassin has no weapons; very odd.

With a start, I noticed the dead man's ring; this man was a messenger for the Occam family! Had he been send to find me to deliver a message, and been killed for that message?

Ruffling through his pockets, I found a letter:

_________

My Brother Roland,

I have heard word of the Sword we seek. As you know, The sword used to slay the great Dragon of Atamara, was lost  ages ago. As I am certain you are aware, our family has sought this artifact for equally as long. Recently, I heard word from a sea captain, who helped a man escape from the Undead Invasion of Beluaterra. He heard stories that a unit of Undead had used the sword against mankind, almost pushing  civilization into the sea. He did not know what became of it.

If you chose to pursue the Sword of the Dragon, be wary; the undead may return, and they may still have the sword.

Love,

Deschain Occam

Count of Tarkhog

Long had my family sought this sword. I would now seek it. This was the best lead in tne years, and I could not pass it up.

Summoning my scribe, I sent a message to the Lords of Oritolon. "Send my thanks for their hospitality, but I must do what I must do. Then find me the fastest ship you are able."

If this quest took me to Beluaterra, so be it. I would find the Sword of the Dragon, even if I had to kill ever undead on the continent to do it.

===Beluaterra===

---The voyage had been hard on Roland. Unused to ocean travel, he had spent most of the time below-decks; a strategy any experienced sailor will tell you is a horrible idea. Tossed to the floor every few hours, and suffocating in the stale air of his cabin, he had not slept in 4 days when the ship finally arrived in Mesh. Barely in charge of his faculties, Roland stumbled off the ship, and promptly set about searching for the great Sword of the Dragon.---

At the time, I was sure the random peasants and nobles at the docks were undead, or some secret dark brotherhood controlling the undead. Grabbing the first one I came to, I demanded to see the Sword.

“I am Roland Occam, of Nazia, and I demand to see the Sword taken from that land so long ago! It is my right!” I growled.

“Put me down! At once!” the surprised man said. Suddenly I remembered I was tired. I decided to take a nap before further interrogating my new prisoner. The mud in the middle of the road looked very comfortable, so I decided to lay face down in the street.

---Frightened by my outburst and choice of sleeping quarters, my scribe and my squire looked at each other.

“What do we do? It he ok?” my young squire asked.

My scribe thought about it for a minute. “He’ll be fine; I’ll send word to the realm saying hello, and when he wakes up, he’ll give us raises for not talking about this to anyone.”

Content at their plan, they dragged Roland to the nearest Inn, and sent a message to the realm.---

Background

Created in the most central region in all of Atamara, the Occam family resides in Nazia, the capitol of Drachenwald. A family of moderate wealth, it produces wise and devoted troopleaders, who are free to swear their loyalty to any realm as they wish.

Gilead

The eldest of the Occams is Gilead. Dedicated to the improvement of his families honor, he pledged himself to the home realm of Occam; Drachenwald.

Early Life

For years, he served as a model soldier and bureaucrat in the mountains. Serving in skirmishes against Falasan and undead, he established himself as a noble who would always follow orders, and always do his duty.

The Civil War

In the events leading up to the Drachenwald Civil War, he was unexpectedly made a key figure; being forced to choose between a promised Generalship under the Loyalists and following his loyalties to the former Prime Minister and rebel leader. Choosing to follow his personal loyalty to the rebel leader, he rallied other troopleaders to the rebellion, and was made Executor after the rebels claimed victory. Following his appointment, he wrote Gilead's Account of Drachenwald's History. It is the best known History of Drachenwald in all Atamara.

The Fall of Gilead Occam

After holding the office of Executor for many months, he was elected Dictator, and given a mandate by his new charges to seek peace. Talking with both the allies and enemies of his realm, he gained respect in the eyes of both, and began to mend the realm’s strained relations with its neighbors. It looked like Drachenwald would gain support from powerful friends, and be able to hold out against its enemies for many months. But then, Drachenwald’s enemies struck. This pivotal battle is detailed in Gilead’s Account of the Battle of Tarasac. Drachenwald’s army was decimated by the invading forces, and all their militia defeated. In the confusion, Gilead was wounded, and Caliber, even though he was wounded, claimed the throne as his own. Gilead found himself beaten and exiled from the realm he had served and loved his whole life, due to a rebellion of only 40 men.

Deschain

Wanting to set out his own and find a worthy cause, Deschain quested through all of Atamara, before finding friendship is Abington. After speaking with Galin, an average troopleader he had met on the streets of Riverholm, he pledged himself to the protection of Abington and its interests.

Modern Times

For his years of devotion, Deschain was given the Lordship of Tarkhog, swearing loyalty to the Dutchy of Wayburg; the most influential and powerful duchy on Atamara.

Roland

The youngest of the Occam family, Roland fought for Oritolon in the colonies.
