The Book of the Damned is indeed a mystery. In the early days of Alaise when the land was a place of superstition and fear many followed old nameless gods. It was a lawless land ruled by a series of short lived despots with little actual authority.  The people tended to take things into their own hands if they were wronged by another.

The idea of a book of the damned came from the idea of the local priests writing the names of those involved in wrong doing so that a list could be presented to their local lord.  However, as this process was pointless as local lords did not last long and did little to nothing other than attempt to line their own pockets the names ended up being kept by the priests.

The Book of the Damned is indeed a mystery. none know of the exact origins of the book, who wrote it or were it really originally came form. it is an ancient and truly mysterious tome, what is known is that for whatever reason it is felled with many arcane symbols and runes. it houses text and information of all kinds of beast, and things supernatural.

it is however rumored to have been written by a mischievous Chaos Daemon. Daemons a closely related to Daimons but differ in that most Daemons do not have a psychical body, and thus most possess a living thing or even an object. further more the Daemons have their own nether realm called the Chaos Realm.

the Daemon's real reason for creating the book is not clear. but the myth goes on to say that a person can make a pact with a Daemon by writing their name in it's pages in their own blood.

upon doing so they offer their bodies, mind, and soul, to that Daemon. they become "Dammed" in return for what ever they wish, if it is the power of that daemon to give. there are many kinds of Daemons, most born of the evil of mans hearts. once a agreement is made with a daemon that person is able to acquire certain 'gifts' of power from their chosen Daemon.

they also became that Daemons champion or Chaos warrior. The Chaos Daemons sometimes turn their eye upon talented individuals in the mortal world and make them into their champion. The Daemon must choose his champions with care, for a succesful follower can increase his influence in the world, while an unsuccesful one diminishes his standing among the other Daemons. The Daemons likes to stamp their champion as his own, this sign is known as the Mark of Chaos. It often takes the shape of a brand into the flesh, usually on the hand or even forehead, and only appearer at random intervals in the form of the Daemon's rune. and the more successful that warrior is in battle the more powerful that Daemon becomes. in contrast, if that champion fails, this will reflect negatively for that Daemon when it is looked upon by it's fellow brethren.

There are many who turn to the Chaos Daemons for the powers they may attain. They think to use the Daemons for personal gain, but nothing is less true for it is they who are used and cast aside if useless. But there are those that follow Chaos with a deep, fervent faith, pledging themselves to it, body and soul. If they find favour in the eyes of their fickle gods and survive the endless battles and do not turn into Spawns, they may well be rewarded the ultimate gift of daemonhood and turn into Daemon Princes.

the first page of the book reads:

"For those mortals that seek the favor the Dark Gods, there is no greater gift than the blessing of daemonhood. Only the few mortals whose service to the Chaos Powers does not end in death or madness may aspire to this goal, and a lucky few among them will be lifted up to stand as princes among the daemons, second only to the Greater Daemons themselves."

The book has been used several times since that time and on every occasion it has brought death in its wake. Its powers are not understood and capricious. It is also more than possible that Chaos Warriors can be fallen knights and soldiers of the Empire or Talerium or any other human civilization and realm.

Not long after being recovered again, the book found it's why into the hands of Zouus Khan. After many mouths of studying the book for himself Zouus found that in the backest most part of the book were a number of runes and symbols he did not at first understand. After bringing it to a wise and learned Men named Dralos Khan, who was able to decipher a few of the runes.

Dralos asked to keep it for a number of days to which Zouus agreed. after a few more weeks Dralos contacted Zouus again and told him that the origin's of the rune's were in fact Arcane in nature, meaning each one held the power of a spell. so far only two have been properly deciphered, Dralos has already told Zouus they are beyond his abilities.

Zouus, thanks to his curse seal, is able to use some of the simpler spells with out giving up his soul or making a pact with a Daemon. little does he realize that he has been marked by the Daemon within his accursed blade, Thanatos.
