The evening was rolling in quickly and the air was so cold it chilled to the bone, she reached in her pack and took out a woolen cloak and wrapped it around her shoulder to warm herself up. She had been pushing her horse hard enough it was time to give him a break. She stopped in the middle of the road and transferred the extra bundles off Kennocha to her horse, and hopped on Kennocha. Up the road came another fork both splitting up again, it would be hard to follow a trail as they were both in heavy use and nearly impossible to track with all the movement packing the snow down.

“Dammit” she came to a full stop with the horses and jumped off to inspect closer.  The boards showed two ports, but both led to different parts of the continent of Atamara.  One road seemed to be packed down more then the others and it also had signs of carriages being pulled. Fiona walked up the less packed road and then returned to the horses.

“Well the barmaid did say the town had made arrangements with the Gronak to deliver food and weapons which means we should be going that way” she climbed back up and Kennocha and kicked him to move to the western road but Kennocha moved a few feet and started to back up in his track sneering.

“Come on Kennocha we don’t have time for this” she patted his neck

“We need to find Kaylan” she kicked him again to move forward but Kennocha started bucking and refused to follow through with Fiona’s direction.

“We got to find Kaylan boy! come on!” she pleaded with the horse and with that comment Kennocha took the opposite road at full speed.

Fiona surprised at the horse’s behavior didn’t fight with him. She remembered Kaylan had told her that Kennocha and her shared a special bond, and she had him forever. She thought she would let Kennocha do the tracking from here, they were close enough it wouldn’t be crazy to think he could sense his master near by.

After a few hours the weather was unbearable and she needed to give the horses a break, the water was probably frozen by now she would need to find a trail near the river and make a small fire to warm them. It had started snowing and she couldn’t afford to take much of a rest if the snow got heavier she wouldn’t have much of a trail to go on. She walked the horse ahead of the road looking carefully to find a small road that would lead to the river and couldn’t see anything.

Kennocha started acting up and was snorting loudly and hitting his two front legs in front of him one after another as in a digging motion. Fiona taken by total surprised turned around to face him.

“What is it boy, what’s the matter” she tried to calm him, his eyes were round and attentive and almost fearful, like he could really understand what she was saying. Continuously he snorted and bobbed his head up and down.

The horse ahead stopped moving and somewhere her mind registered the movement. They were stopping for the night and Kaylan looked ahead silently, the images and sounds around were nothing but a blur. The painful violent trembling of her body had eventually subsided to numbness. She could no longer feel her feet but a part of her realized the only warmth she felt was strangely running down her legs.

Managing to look down, she blinked slowly to the snow as it pooled with blood. In that moment everything slowed and despair leeched out replaced by serenity and she let out a soft breath, misting the cold air. She was going to rest, the Gods were finally granting her death. She heard a mumbled voice approach, the images still unable to coalesce and she blinked again. Her cracked lips gave what looked to be a shadow of a smile, she was dying, she no longer cared.

Kennocha leaned his head down to the snow and snorted, curiously Fiona knelt down and started inspecting the road. The tracks no longer were as heavy as they had been, showing lesser movement. Fiona started looking around the edges on the road, snow was untouched everywhere around her. She grabbed both horses and walked back down the road, to her surprise she looked back at Kennocha.

“Good boy” she patted him and quickly tied him to her horse, although Fiona didn’t share  the same sentiments as Kaylan did with Kennocha, Fiona’s nameless horse still remain faithful and they had a language of their own, he knew when he was needed and came at the first sound of her whistle.

Travelers had parted off the road into a smaller path which she had totally missed, frustrated at the thought she shook her head and was thankful she had taken Kay’s horse along for the search. One thing she was sure of no matter the circumstances she would find Kaylan in, she was bringing her back home.

Walking up the path she could clearly see two horses had just recently gone through by the depths of the hoofs and the lightly covered fallen snow inside the prints. She looked up and started looking around, she could smell smoke which meant there was a fire around, she looked back at her horse and lifted her hand in front of his face and told him to stay put.

She continued up the road a few steps when she notice a lighted area, she came back to the horses and grabbed her belt, her hands were shaking and her heart was pounding so hard in her chest she could feel it’s racing rhythm in her throat. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Removing her woolen cloak she stuffed it under the saddle. She reached for two daggers and placed them in each boot down a leather strap, she set her sword in it’s sheathe on her back and secured her dagger snugly around her thigh. Lastly she reached to the top of her head and rearranged her hair pin.

Looking ahead she moved towards the lighted area,  she had changed back into her clothes a few hours back which made her sneaking around easier. She stepped in the horses footsteps making sure not to break a sound. The closer she got she could make out a camp at been set up with a small tent and a fire but she couldn’t see anyone standing outside the tent. You could see the shadows moving around in the tent and the closer she got she could hear laughter. She paused and looked around she needed to make sure these people were indeed who she was looking for, she could only make out two shadows for now and she drew closer to the back of the tent.

What happened to her no longer mattered, she couldn’t even feel the slightest sensation and she closed her eyes. The blur that was before her changed, replaced with something she should have recognized, what was left of her tried to grasp it but it was so evasive.  She had to bring something with her to her death, she tried to pull it towards her, it was a color so intense, a part of her knew it shouldn’t be that hard to identify.

“Dalvax she’s not even fighting us anymore, look at her” one man said

“Gronak is going to have our heads if we bring her back like this” he said quickly after his first comment.

“Not if we tell him she fought us all the way here” the man replied.

Fiona inspected the tent, just off the corner she noticed a parted seam where the tent had been tied down to the pole. She leaned in closer and pulled the flap back a little further to look inside.  Her heart stopped as her eyes came upon what she saw, Fiona covered her mouth to silence her reaction and held her breath with watery eyes.

Kaylan laid on a woolen blanket on the floor, her hands were bound in front of her like a prisoner. Her hair was in knots and her knees were almost raw from having fallen down and being drug in snow. Her skin was pale and her arms and legs were badly bruised with deep open wounds which bled all over her torn wet dress. Fiona gasp silently and closed her eyes while the pool of tears emptied on her cheeks.  She had to keep her eyes on her sister she wanted to barge in there and kill them both but they were still both heavily armed and couldn’t take the risk. Kaylan would have to hold on just a little longer until she could make her move.

Both men had their backs turned to Fiona which made it easier for her to see how she could handle the situation. A tall dark man turned over to the other massive one and threw his arms up.

“You might as well just kill me now because if you don’t Gronak will” he handed the man his own sword “I want no part of this” he pointed down at Kaylan

“Get a grip man” he pushed his sword back on the man’s chest “You worry too much” he took his belt off throwing his sword behind him.

“You’re just upset she didn’t put up a fight” he slapped Kaylan in the face

“HEY! Wake up!” he laughed as Kaylan’s head slowly came to make contact with his eyes.

“Were almost home” he laughed “This is going to be our last night together” he started to pull her dress up further.

Fiona gritted her teeth in anger, the amount of sympathy she was feeling for her sister was almost unbearable. She watched as the man violated her,  kissing on her and pulling her head from one direction to the other. Kaylan‘s face remain emotionless, she just starred off into the distance. Fiona‘s eyes caught Kaylan's and a chill came down her back, she had made eye contact and Kaylan could now see someone was here to help her.  Fiona eyed the other man and looked back at Kaylan trying to let her know that she was here but Kaylan remain emotionless. She could barely see out of her eye as it was almost swollen shut and her lips were cracked and badly cut from being hit and heavily chapped from the weather and dehydration. Fiona thought of the child who was growing inside her and almost lost it again.

She knew was it was now, what seemed to be so important before, the color blue filled her mind. It was Malcolm’s eyes. She would never again have her breath stolen by him or feel the sweet tightness in her chest whenever he was near.  The burning heat only his fingers could make her feel as they danced across her feverish skin. He would never hear her heart beat madly as she told him how much she loved him. He would never want her like this anyway…there was nothing left of her but a shell. She wouldn’t want him to remember her like this in the end, it was better this way. It was cruel that she would trade the only thing that ever meant anything to her in this life, for peace.

Her face refused to move and she inwardly smiled at the serenity she felt. Then an image wormed its way through the color, changing it to emerald green and red. She was home…she remembered her mother’s face now, it was right there with her, during her last moments. Did that mean she was joining her mother in death, had the sickness taken her already? She tried to call out, but her voice no longer worked.

“I can’t do this anymore, we’re as good as dead we might as well leave her here” Viktor said as he paced back and forth watching Dalvax have his way with Kaylan

“I’m not bringing her back like this Dalvax, you hear me” he grabbed a cloak

“Look it her she‘s dying” he walked out of the tent.

Dalvax ignored the panicked man and continued. Fiona slipped away from the back of the tent to the side lucky for her the footsteps of the man were still in the snow from them putting up the tent, she stepped lightly into them making her way to the front carefully not to be noticed. She leaned down to her boot and grabbed her daggers tightly in her hand.  There was no time to make an approach on him considering the distance was short the snow would give her away. She pulled her arm back and threw one dagger at the man’s back, caught by surprised the man turned around and found Fiona starring dead into his eyes and but a second later the other dagger found his throat bringing him down to his knees gasping as Fiona watched his face his the ground.

Fiona reached behind her and unsheathed her sword and walked to the front of the tent taking a deep breath. She swung the flap open and eyed the man and charged at him kicking him on the side of his face off of Kaylan, her eyes quickly found his sword as his did and Fiona swung her sword and cut his arm open as he quickly pulled it back, and she grabbed his sword bringing both blades at him one to his neck the other at his heart.

“Go ahead make a move I dare you” she looked back at Kaylan

“Kaylan” she yelled to get her to focus on her. But Kaylan didn’t move she remain still on the ground her hands bound by bloody ropes.

“Dammit Kaylan, look at me” she yelled louder still pressing the blades harder down on the man

“I swear to the Gods if you move I’ll kill you like I killed the rest of your men” she narrowed her eyes to his

She heard her mother finally call her name and was so torn that she couldn’t even reply to her. All she wanted was to tell her how much she loved and missed her and that she was so sorry she was never coming home again, sorry she was never able to fulfill her dying wish. She had found her sister but had never been able to bring her back home.

Fiona looked around the tent and found rope on a log in the corner next to Dalvax.

“Give me the rope” she screamed at him trying to maintain control. But the fear she felt was growing quicker inside her as Kaylan was showing no signs of coherency.

Dalvax’s eyes were round and starring her down “You ain’t going to get away with this” he laughed as he reached for the rope. “There’s over 20 men waiting on us they’ll come looking for you and kill you for taking what belongs to Gronak” he laughed and threw the rope at her

“That’s what buddy said back at the port before I slit his throat” she kicked the rope back at him

“Tie your feet and don’t even try a loose knot" her hands gripped the hilts tighter.

The man grabbed the rope and chuckled, reaching down to his feet he grabbed a dagger out of his boot stabbing her in the leg. Fiona swung the flat of her blade in the man’s face knocking him down again, almost falling herself from the sharp burning sensation she felt in her leg but she remained on her feet, as her face took on a whole new different look.  Her eyes narrowed in hatred and anger as she leaned down in pain to check his other boot, holding the blade harder down on him almost piercing though his neck “Try that again” she threw the rope in his face

“TIE THEM UP” she backed up again. This time the man took the rope and bound his feet together still keeping his eyes on her smiling.

“Looks like I would have had more fun with you” he said provoking Fiona into kicking him in the face again. Laying back he shook his head back and forth from the blow, this man could take a beating and she could see clearly with her own eyes she could not afford to make any mistakes. With Kaylan down not moving Fiona could only count on herself and had to keep her eyes on her sister’s assailant, and Dalvax kept his eyes closely on her with a half cocked smile licking the blood from his lip.

“Now what?” he laughed “You going to use that thing” he pressed his throat onto the blades as he forced himself back to a sitting position

“You’re going to have to do better then that to keep me down little lady” he gave a nod up

“GET UP” she moved back

“And keep your hands in front of you” she kept moving back as the man tried to balance himself up on his bound feet.

Moving around him Fiona pulled the blade back from his neck and pressed the other harder on his side.  Dalvax grabbed the sword and tried to swing Fiona around back in front of him, with his bloody hands wrapped around the sword Fiona by instinct pulled the blade back cutting his right thumb off with the sword, as the man screamed in agony. Fiona quickly fell in behind him. With the man down on his knees Fiona quickly pulled her hair pin out and stabbed him through his collar bone throwing the pin back towards Kaylan. Kicking him forward face down, she grabbed the rope and put her knee into his back pulling his injured hand back then grabbing the other wrapping the rope around his hands. She had such an adrenaline pumping in her she kept wrapping the rope over and over using all she had knot after knot while she flashed back to the recent incident at the tavern.

Falling back on the ground she kicked and drug herself away from him as quickly as she could in a panic trying to catch her breath in fear. She had killed many men on the battlefield, she had taken many injuries in the last years but nothing compared to what she was feeling right here right now. She was mortified and couldn't believe what she had just done, she had become a murderer, the blood of those men were on her hands nothing could have prepared her for this.

Something was wrong. Her mother’s voice had disappeared so abruptly an emptiness filled her and she began to feel angry. Why was she leaving her now? She was so close.

She looked over at Kaylan and finally came by her side, gently grabbing her head she laid it on her thigh. She moved her knotted hair out of her face and gently caressed her cheek. The tears just poured from her eyes as she looked at her beaten sister.

“Kaylan” she brought her face up to meet her eyes

“Kaylan, it’s Fiona,” she choked up. “Kaylan answer me” she pleaded and cried even harder

“Pleeasse, Kaylan” she continued to caress her face.

Kaylan’s eyes remained opened looking away from Fiona, she was breathing very short breaths and she was cold and still showed no movement. Fiona touched her everywhere, everything she touched was cold, bruised or cut. Although her entire body was frozen she was running a very high fever and she didn’t seem to respond to nothing, she had gone into a catatonic state. The blood had seeped through her dress and you could barely make out the color except little pieces of the fabric around the seams which was distinctively showing green.

Fiona got up carefully putting her sisters head back down and reached for a folded woolen blanket on top of a satchel.  She tucked the blanket around Kaylan gently not to hurt her broken body, and got up and started frantically going through the bags trying to find anything to wrap the man who laid on the ground laughing at her.

“You think you’ve won don’t you” he laughed

“SHUT UP or I kill you right now I swear…” she screamed and he laughed harder.  “SHUT UP!” she continued to look around the tent.

“If you were going to kill me you would have done so by now, you don’t have the guts” he continued to try and provoke Fiona.

Grabbing the dagger around her thigh she flipped him over and brought her watery eyes to meet his.

“You’re already dead, you just don‘t know it” she tightened her lips making them white pressing the dagger on his throat ready to slice him open “I’m saving your kill” she looked back at Kaylan “for her!”

“There’s a unit ahead of us announcing our arrival at the port tomorrow” he smiled “When they see we are not there with the package they will come looking” he said chuckling “And she’s not going to kill me” he laughed  “She can’t even stand up right now”  he raised a brow smiling showing his bloody teeth.

Fiona grabbed a piece of the blanket on the floor and cut a piece and gagged him “I TOLD YOU TO SHUT UP” she tightened the knot behind his head and got up and walked to the doorway and whistled loudly for her horse. It wasn’t but a few moments later both horses reached the tent and Kennocha kept bopping his head and trying to pull away from Fiona’s horse. Fiona grabbed the satchel off her horse and ran back in grabbing rope inside and tied it around the man legs.  Standing up she marched outside and slapped her horses rump making him move forward until the man laid in the snow outside.
