Part 14: The Compromising Remuneration

Crossing his arms once more, and allowing the scabbarded sword to rest against and over his left shoulder, the noble listened to the adventurer's humble hopes. Well, the request for gold was naught more than a pittance, easily granted. The request for a pardon, however, could not be dealt with as easily... or could it? Letters of recommendations were commonly enough given to lowborn people for exceptionally rendered services. Perhaps the duke could pen such a note in such a way that would offer this adventurer some added security whilst travelling throughout the lands of Aenilia.

As for an actual pardon, well...

"Irdys, that is your name, is it not? As I am not the Lord High Chancellor, I cannot grant you a pardon in the sense that you seem to seek. Although, what I can do instead is bestow upon you a letter of recommendation, allowing you to travel relatively safely through Aenilic regions. Should any guards question you, or any nobles seek to harass you, simply show them this letter, and they will leave you alone.

"And if they do not, well... I am certain that I shall hear of the matter one way or another, and you can then rest assured that they will be punished accordingly. However..." -dramatic pause for effect- "...this does not mean that you may do as you wish with no consequences. Behave rationally, follow our laws, and conduct yourself respectfully, and I see no problem. But should you fail to do so, know that my letter will not save you from justice."

Xarnelf paused again to allow his words to sink in before continuing.

"If you wish to find a home here, then ridding the land of the occasional wild beasts and unholy zombies will go far in raising your reputation. I also suggest that you tell no one else of your birthplace, for that could certainly lead to trouble with others who are less understanding and reasonable than myself.

"As for the monetary price, I will grant you a sum of fifty gold pieces. This is a fine blade," the duke tapped the sword several times against his shoulder, as he continued speaking, "and it appears that you could use a new cloak, and perhaps some new leathers as well, before you pay a visit to our temple."
