Hauling Ass Out of Haul

"Infantry?? Where did they come from?! Damn them all!"

"Sir, maybe we should just turn back?"

"We proceed with the attack, Mathias. They have already spotted us anyway. CHAAAARGE!!!"

The hero fell to his knees, looking around in disbelief at the utter failure of this last attempt. The defenders had reacted quickly to their return and dispatched enough infantry to their side of the walls to prevent them from ever gaining a foothold. Arrows arced down all about him, felling a handful of his remaining men, but Xarnelf did not seem to notice the danger. The loud battle noises all around him seemed to fade away, until it was nothing more than a dull buzzing at the back of his head.

What had he hoped to accomplish by this foolhardy return? He knew not any more, feeling suddenly very empty inside... empty, and cold. Was this really the way to seek revenge for the unjust execution of his sister? Throwing his men away at these high walls, like ocean waves being broken upon a sheer cliff? He stared dully at these walls, still ignoring the mayhem happening around him, as more of his unit fell to opposing blades and arrows.

Then he was brought out of his daze by none other than his trusted captain, who had placed a hand on his shoulder and shook him roughly. The hero turned to look at Mathias, who opened and closed his mouth, forming a series of words that the kneeling man did not hear at first, still caught up, as he was, in the shock of the whole situation.

"--ust get out, NOW! Everyone is already wounded or dead! MOVE, sire!"

More arrows whizzed by as the captain growled at the duke's petrified state and dropped his sword to haul him with both hands away from the field. Luck was with the pair, for they managed to retreat out of the defenders' range before becoming pincushions. The same could not be said of the majority of the other men, as everyone fled the carnage.
