Poor Captain Mathias

"Captain Mathias! Gather my Legionnaires within a hundredcount! We attack Upasael by sundown!"

Aghast, the poor captain could only open and close his mouth in shock for several heartbeats, until he found his voice. "M-my lord? I thought we were all waiting for the Regal Guard to join us before attacking Ohnar's forces..."

"Worry not, my good man! We have the element of surprise on our side!"

The captain gulped audibly. "Uh, one more question, sir."

"Aye?"

"We aren't going alone, are we?"

Xarnelf grinned like a squire who just became promoted to a full knight, and allowed the man to sweat a bit longer before turning to reply, "Of course we are, Mathias! Hurry up man, I want to get there before old Tharion does, hahah!"

One of the captain's eyebrows twitched uncontrollably, but the Duke had already turned away, so he did not notice the man's discomfort. His mouth opened and closed several more times before he decided to just let it be. There was no doubt in his mind now that his liege had gone completely insane in his old age, what with all the recent reckless charges into battle.

Fervently, he prayed the Aenil would knock some sense into the man before they arrived at their destination. Otherwise, he might have to slip a little something into the Duke's wine. With a long sigh, He rationalized that a sleeping Duke is better than a dead Duke.

Several hours later, when the backward scouts reported no other movement from the rest of the army, Mathias sighed again. They were doomed! Now to find a suitable excuse to stop the march and knock out the crazy Hero... Uh oh, here he comes, Matty, think of something quick!

The captain stared blankly as his liege approached from the front of the column with a big, goofy grin plastered on his face. Sigh...what now?

"Guess what, Mathias? I was merely playing a joke upon you, old friend! We are misdirecting only until the Regal Guard arrives. I may be brave and out for glory, but rest assured that I am not suicidal.." Xarnelf waited two seconds before adding a whispered, "..yet."

A strong gust of wind blew suddenly, and stunned Captain Mathias fell off his horse, landing on his backside amidst the Duke's loud guffaw.
