Lyria's Smiling Wave

Xarnelf cocked his head as he watched Lady Lyria de Atrebain pass by his encampment on her way to Nahad. Smiling, she waved at him before continuing onwards. The young knight nodded back with a confused smile plastered on his face. Lady Lyria seemed familiar to him, but try as he might, Xarnelf could not pinpoint exactly when he had made her acquaintance or if he even had at all.

Captain Feralgem walked over to the noble as the last of the Arcaean lady's train moved by. Turning away from looking after the departing party to his friend, Xarnelf raised an eyebrow questioningly.

"Jint, have you ever seen that lady before? I have the strangest feeling that we have met, but I cannot remember anything about it."

Urjintah crossed his arms with a soft sigh.

"Indeed I have, Xarne. She accompanied us to Remton from Lasop the week before you fell ill with the fever."

The knight looked down in thought.

"Oh...That would explain it.."

He looked back up to meet his captain's gaze.

"Did you need something, my friend?"

"Well, the men are bored here without much to do. Paying them every two days has helped to keep their spirits up a bit, but they are growing restless. It would be best to head back to the city soon for a day or two's rest and relaxation."

"Actually, I was planning to break camp tonight. Since the tax collection day is today, I figured I would exchange my bonds at the bank to once again fill my purse."

"Very well then. I shall inform the men."

Xarnelf nodded absently.

"See you at sunset, Jint."

The young noble headed back towards his tent, deep in thought. His countenance brightened as he caught sight of the letter on his cot. It was good to hear that his father was back to his normal self again without any adverse side effects resulting from his unexplained fever.

He, on the other hand, was not so lucky, it seemed. His mind still contained a missing block of memories, which were perhaps lost forever. The healer Arvutiel had never figured out what caused his sudden ailment and had finally resigned to believe that it must have been the work of an otherwordly power. This belief greatly troubled Xarnelf though, for it implied that the Aenil may have had a hand in causing his predicament.

As his mind wandered, the knight lay down on his cot and whispered a rhetorical question.

"Why would the Aenil do such a thing, if it was truly them?"

Xarutek looked down at the young man, shaking his head sadly.

To protect you,
Is what we do.
If only you knew the ultimate price;
But for now amnesia will suffice....
