Metamorphosis (Part 2: Oath)

Xarnelf sat up in his bed, a new person. Looking down, he noticed the letter that Xarutek had left behind for him to consider lying on his leg. He picked it up and read its contents.

Xarnelf...

How do you think the realm has been going? I don't mean how we are going in war... how are we going in observance of the Aenil, remaining true to the old ideals?

We are the last bastion of Aenilic authority in the East... and we have been promised doom.

I have a plan to change this... if you supported me, we could save the Aenil. You will be reviled by some, but you will help save Aenilia... Then we can work on patiently restoring the path.

Are you willing?

As he finished reading the last question, an image of the Pontifex, Lord Orphen, flashed into his mind's eye with a beckoning smile. The knight closed his eyes and whispered, "Yes, milord..." In his head, Xarnelf continued replying silently, somehow knowing that Orphen would hear his unspoken words.

The realm now is not the same realm that I joined over a year ago. I had thought that I could help make a difference as an active noble, that I could contribute in bringing some very needed change to Taith Aenil. But then She revealed the Book of Promises, the religious text that was the final straw. Promises was the proof that the Mark had strayed from the true path, the original path.

If you have a plan, Lord Orphen, then know that I stand behind you, that I support you fully. If I am to be reviled by some, then so be it, provided I can help you make a difference, make a change, for the better of all Aenilia. You are a strong leader, milord, and I truly believe that you will have what it takes to restore us to the path of righteousness.

For what Taith Aenil was, and what Taith Aenil shall be, I pledge my life and sword to you, Lord Orphen!

Xarnelf smiled with his eyes still closed, confident in his choice, believing with every fiber of his being that he still walked the path of honor and of justice.
