- As far as fantasy names go, "Aegis" is usually used to denote some form of shield or buckler. After all, the original Ægis was Zeus' shield. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aegis) (It's what I would have assumed, also.)However, if the game doesn't specify that the item is a shield, then I don't see why the finder couldn't decide what type of item it is for himself, as odd as it may sound to someone else.
