Templates

Umm... what are you doing with all these templates? You've obviously copied them all from somewhere else. Wikipedia? Please stop doing this until we get a chance to discuss it. --Indirik (talk), Editor (talk) 12:55, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Wanted to add a NavBox which I found on wikipedia, but it seemed to require a lot of templates. If it's illegal what I'm doing please say so, then I will stop. Roy 12:58, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
With something that requires this much effort and templates, please don't make such a major change without discussing it first. BattleMaster wiki does not need anywhere near the complexity and flexibility that WikiPedia does. Also, this wiki may not have all the extensions and code modifications that wikipedia does, so some of their complex templates just won't work. Perhaps if we knew why you wanted this, or what you were trying to accomplish, we could do the same thing, but much easier. --Indirik (talk), Editor (talk) 13:01, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
Just wanted to add a navbox for my own page, like one [1], only then different. But I'll list the templates I added down on my user page, to have a quick overview of what I've been doing. -- Roy 13:06, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
It is a nice looking template, but there are much simpler ways to do that than to add all those templates. Also there are a couple problems: First, if you're only going to use it on your page, i.e. in one place, then don't use a template. Templates are for things that will appear on several pages. Second, that particular template includes quite a lot of extra features and capabilities that we won't ever use. There's absolutely no reason to be adding 40 or 50 templates to this wiki just to get a nice looking table. For an application like this, you should just either code the table manually on your page, or develop a simplified template that is more appropriate to this wiki. Third, if you bring something over from Wikipedia, make sure you comply with the Wikipedia licensing terms, and that those terms are compatible with this wiki's licensing terms. Feel free to come to IRC and discuss this. Just look for "Indirik", I'm usually in the main channel. --Indirik (talk), Editor (talk) 13:26, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
Well, I listed everything down, I guess, or almost. But here you don't really have pages which explains how to make such tables, that's why I copied them from wikipedia. But I'll come on IRC, lets continue there - Roy 13:32, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

New infobox template

Regarding: Template:Realm-box. I noticed that you created a new realm infobox template. Is there any reason that you have created a new template, instead of using one of the existing templates? Also, your template does not use any of the semantic tagging, or the external data feed. We have been attempting to consolidate the various realm infobox and region infobox templates. I'm sure you will find an existing template that does pretty much what you need to do. --Indirik (talk), Editor (talk) 12:06, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Just practising with general templates. And we hope to create a new realm soon on the Far East, and I'm sure that I'll put some afford in making us a realm page, so will use it there. And don't like the systematic boxes, they add you realm map and making the infobox too large. --Roy 14:38, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
Hey, I just saw your new Realm-Box template. I was just recently updating the one for Sirion, and I thought I'd share some things. I noticed that in your template you prompt for the Ruler Title, Current Ruler, General Title, Current General, etc...
This can be supplied automatically for you by using the external feed. Take a look at Template:Infobox Sirion and its most recent changes for how to do this in your own template, in particular this change. It really simplifies things, and it keeps the info always up to date. -- Corwyn 15:01, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
OK, looks interesting. I'll take a look at it tonight and see if I'll be able to put that in my own template as well. Thanks for the help. --Roy 15:19, 26 October 2009 (UTC)
  • Template:RealmBox is user-configurable. If you don't want a realm map, then don't specify the "mapname" parameter, and you don't get a realm map. See: Cagilan Empire. That page uses the RealmBox template without a map. Or you could do it like Caergoth does, and not have a map or a banner. They also customize the colors.
  • Semantic markup is more than just a nice thing, it will eventually become mandatory. There are a couple bugs to work out with updating the semantics. But once that is done, then all realm and region templates that do not use semantic markup will be replaced with ones that are.
  • Rather than just make a new template because you don't like some particular thing about an existing template, see what you can do to modify the existing template to make it able to do what you need. If you can't do it, ask for help> Also, if the difference between what exists and your ideal design is just a minor cosmetic change, consider just using the standard template anyway. It's really not effective to have several dozen realm infobox templates that vary only by the outline style, or background color. Consistency in style and design helps tie the wiki together. Having dozens of realm infobox templates also makes it impractical to update them if something needs to change across the board.

No problem, I'll just adjust the Page name so everyone's knows that it is for personal use. --Roy 19:52, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

Palm Sea

This one?

Awwww. I liked the original image of Palm Sea Desert. It seemed to fit the region very well. The village does too, but I'm going to miss the old image. Anyway, thank you for the work on the region pages. Its good to see some elaboration done on them to add to the ICness of BM and not just have such bland pages. --Ethan Lee Vita (Talk), Editor and Community Manager 18:19, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Well, thank you. But I am just interested, what image did you had about Palm Sea? --Roy 19:35, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
The Palm Sea Desert image that you uploaded a few days ago. The one you uploaded 2 new versions to yesterday. --Ethan Lee Vita (Talk), Editor and Community Manager 23:02, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
If you mean this image, I changed it because of the mountains in the back. Though the new one was more realistic. --Roy 06:19, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Barca Wiki Page

The name of the realm is "Barca", not "Republic of Barca". It is listed everywhere in the game, and in all external data feeds, as "Barca". Thus everyone in the game, and the semantic wiki, all know it as "Barca". The place in the game where you can set the realm name doesn't work. Well, it works in that you can set it, but it doesn't work in that it is never used anywhere. To keep things on the wiki where people expect them to be, we name things according to what they are named in-game, using the exact same name/terminology. If you had wanted your realm to be "Republic of Barca", then you should have named it that in-game. It keeps things simple, easy, and predictable for everyone. --Indirik (talk), Editor (talk) 15:42, 18 February 2011 (CET)
