Saying second-in-command of the such-and-such army is a bit unwieldy. I have been trying to determine a better term to use. I really don't know military terms real well. This is my best approximation from my limited research.

What we know

There are three ranks given to us that we may use for reference.

General

Head of all military in the realm.

Marshal

Head of an “army” and subordinate to the general. Most of the references to marshal that I can find seem to be superior to that of a general. Clearly this doesn't work. Historically, it seems, it may have been used as the term for one who leads a division. This seems to be today the position of a Major General.

Captain

This is a little messed up, but I say we run with it. A captain historically would have lead the unit, and had another noble as his lieutenant. In other words, a TL should be called “captain”. Whatever.

What we need to know

There are two unidentified ranks between Marshal (Major General) and Captain that need to be identified. Namely: Second-in-Command and TL. I propose Colonel and Major be used, respectively. Major will probably never catch on, as they are either called troop leaders or knights, but colonel is much easier to say than second-in-command (and it sounds better).
