An Abrupt Change in Ownership

With so many soldiers present, Barad Lacirith was bustling with activity. More than one officer had recently had a black mark added to his military record for disorderly conduct. The problem, they argued, was that there was far too little to do.

But in the seedier part of the southern port district, life continued normally. Rather, it continued as normal as possible amid the drunken sailors and an occasional thief or two. At the Peeking Ostrich tavern, it was a slow night. Several ships had left that day, along with the taverns most recent customers.

A newcomer walked in, dressed as a stable hand. He was obviously noble born, though he tried to hide it. He looked around the room quickly, analytically, ordered a drink, and sat at an occupied table. The men already sitting there had been speaking in hushed tones, but they were silent now. They glared at him with both hatred and confusion.

“Evening gents.” He tried to look at them innocently. “No need to stop on my account. I'd just as soon join a conversation than start one.”

One of them looked at his ale intently. Another shifted his weight to pretend that he wasn't drawing a knife.

A maid delivered his mug. “What about politics, huh. Can you believe that our king would so quickly abandon his faith.”

They stared at him for a second more. One by one they stood, and without saying a word, turned and left. The newcomer sighed and sipped his drink. When it was empty, he stood and left too.

The next day, the tavern was closed, and no sign of the barkeep. The day following there stood two guards outside for several hours, and it seemed that nobody dared approach them. The bar remained closed for the better part of a week. Then suddenly, it reopened, but with a new barkeep...

OOC

This is intended as an in-character excuse to allow people to send me information (or red herrings) regarding the supposed Eston underground. Things found in the bar, or things said to the new barkeep can be sent to me privately or openly. Things found in the bar should have a real connection, even if they are cleverly planted there to be misleading. Anything might be said (and in a bar, one might argue that everything gets said eventually). Please note that you do not need to be part of the underground to send me information. Unless you explicitly say so, I have no way to know if you are a rebel/freedom-fighter or loyalist/oppressor. If you wish to remain completely anonymous, you may post here, but anything you say there will be public.
