Demolishing Workshops and Recruitment Centers Implemented on TestingJuly 22, 2009
The option to demolish workshops and recruitment centers has now been enabled on testing islands. While the general looting option to Damage Military Infrastructure will damage recruitment centers, the damage done that way is more generalized. The new option of demolishing workshops and recruitment centers lets you focus your damage in a particular building.

A Better Banner Picker?July 9, 2009
A new feature that we've heard rumors about, the Better Banner Picker, is another new feature that will be arriving any day now. While this feature is only available to rulers, it should be very helpful to them. They will now be able to easily select from any banner that has previously been used by any realm, as well as upload new banners to the server for easier review by Tom. While newly uploaded banners won't be available for use until they are approved, this new process should make that quicker, as it will make the process much easier for Tom.

Mobile/Militia Strength in Scout ReportsJuly 9, 2009
A new feature that will also soon hit the test servers is the separation of mobile and militia forces in scout reports. This welcome change should eliminate the need for some manual calculations.

Upcoming Region Report ChangesJuly 9, 2009
One thing that BattleMaster has always attempted is to remove the incentive for people to micromanage other players, and also remove any possible benefit of doing so. A new change that is being moved into the game (no exact time frame is yet known, but we expect it soon) is the removal of the display of the exact percentage levels for region stats. Once this change goes live, only the region lord and his knights will be able to determine the exact percentage level for loyalty, morale, and production. Other nobles will only be able to see a descriptive value that indicates an approximate range, similar to the way region control has always been displayed. If a lord or knight scouts their own region, then the scout report generated will also contain the exact values. The descriptive terms that will be used are listed on the Region page.

Upcoming Interface ChangesJuly 6, 2009
AJ has been working hard on improving the BattleMaster interface. He posted on the Discussion List about some of his latest changes that will soon be going live.

The following UI changes have been made recently. Some are live already and the others should go live soon. A couple of them cause functionality changes so please do take a note (Marked with a *):

  1. Giving medals is smoother using ajax. No popup but just a overlay modal window informing you of the result.
  2. Switching between Plain text and Rich Text editor is instantaneous. No need to reload the page.
  3. The link which used to change the preference for the editor will not do that anymore. Instead, it will only toggle the editor type for that instance. To change your default editor type, please visit the options page from your family screen. *
  4. The message preview is instantaneous. No wait for the server side return the preview data. *
    • For now, any and all html will show up in the preview but it will still be stripped away on the server side except for those that are allowed (noted on the message write page)
    • Scribe notes and adventurer links are not interpreted into links as of now
    • Wiki links are not interpreted right now.
    • The background coloring of the drop-down has been removed. Instead, look at the message preview *
  5. The number of characters used out of the total is displayed at the bottom of the editor (bottom line of the RTE and below the plain text editor)

All of these changes require JS (which should be enabled by default on the desktop browsers). All the features will still be usable if JS is turned off for you. Mileage may vary on mobile devices due to a lack of mobile devices to test these changes.

Final Name ChangesJune 18, 2009
The latest login message:

Name changes have been enabled again, for a limited time.

After this round, all clearly inappropriate names I encounter will be deleted with no further warning. This is valid for all islands, and all characters and families. Yes, it includes characters and families that have been around for years. While in some cases there was no naming policy when they were created, there is now and they have had ample opportunities to adapt.

What is a "clearly inappropriate name"? Basically, anything that is obviously not a name and anything that includes a title or a nickname. "Jack" is fine, it is a name. "Jack the Great" is inappropriate because it isn't just a name. "King Jack" is inappropriate because it includes a title. "Jxyz" is inappropriate because it clearly is not a name in any language. "Jackhammer" is inappropriate because it's an object, not a name. We will, as usual, err on the side of caution, but the clear examples outlined above will be given no mercy.

Tom

The message was also repeated in-game. Another message was sent specifically to Outer Tilog, indicating that characters who will only ever live in Outer Tilog will have more relaxed rules, but will still not be allowed titles in the name.

New Economy Moving Along?June 16, 2009
A day or two ago I spotted the presence of "Wood" in the "new" warehouse screen of a region on the Far East. A possible indication that New Economy is advancing?

Some Inappropriately Named Characters DeletedJune 16, 2009
From the login message today:

Inappropriate Names
A number of highly inappropriate character names have been deleted with no prior warning. I've decided on the harsh approach because the character creation page says in no uncertain terms some of the rules.

Tom

The reason for deletion includes having a title included in the character name, such as "King" or "Queen". As the character creation screen says, titles, including "Sir" or "Lady" are in-game titles that your characters must earn. Names should also be period-appropriate. For additional information, refer to the Name Rules.

Mixed Infantry Balance ChangeMay 27, 2009
Tom recently posted the following changes to Mixed Infantry on the Discussion List:

I've modified the combat effectiveness of mixed infantry a bit, it should now be generally stronger and reflect their CS values better. This is on testing only right now, it will be a few days (or weeks) until it moves to stable. But try them, the old "MI sucks" mantra may no longer hold true.

Also, one often-overlooked fact about MI: They take less size penalties than other units. You may have noticed that the "CS per man" value of units goes slightly down in large units (i.e. if you have 20 men with 400 CS, and add 200 men with identical values, thy will not have 4400 CS, but a bit less). MI is less effected by this, since the men can complement each other better.
