Analysis of the April, 2006 Kalmar Rebellion

The Founding of the Kalmar Islands

The Kalmar Islands is a grouping of three small islands located just off the western coast of the East Island. The three small islands surround the Kalmar Bay. The island chain itself was formed in early 2006 during the Great Eruption. After the islands appeared, the realms of Perdan and Old Rancagua put aside their ongoing war and joined together to colonize the islands. The new realm was named after the island chain itself: Kalmar Islands.

The government of Kalmar Islands was formed as a monarchy. Prior to the rebellion the realm was ruled by King Prometheus, assisted by High Marshal Requiem, Arch Priest Franklin of Orange, and Royal Treasurer Billy Bob Brubaker.

The Revolt

On April 6, 2006, El Cidd initiated a rebellion against King Prometheus. In his rebellion announcement, El Cid babbled some nonsense about reforming the lost nation of Avamar. This speech rambled badly, and was barely intelligible. After approximately 24 hours, the rebellion was successful, with the support of 9 of the 22 nobles of the realm.

El Cid set himself up as the Dictator and General of the new government, a tyranny. He installed his cronies Artanis and Asmodeus as the Judge and Banker, respectively. Requiem, the former General and Count of Wasteland, has been removed from the General's position, but retains control of Wasteland. All other nobles were removed from their positions. Update - It appears that Requiem was out of communication during El Cid's rebellion, and therefore remained neutral. Requiem is reportedly siding with the original, legitimate government in the counter-rebellion.

The Rebels

El Cid, and his entire family, are well known across all the various continents. Altogether, his family members have been banned from 14 realms! Reasons for the bannings range from loafing around the capital, refusal to follow orders, and insulting fellow nobles to inciting rebellion. El Cid's ties to Avamar itself are poor. He was banned by Donna Ragna three days after entering Avamar for "Causing unrest to the realm from the first day he joined. Insulting fellow TL's". Not exactly a stellar foundation from which to build a new Avamar.

Perhaps the strongest ties from El Cid to Avamar lies with his sibling, named "One". One was elected as the ruler of Avamar twice. The second time he stepped down as ruler after 17 days and left the East Island. The same day El Cid immigrated to the East Island. Two days later El Cid joined Avamar, and three days later was banned.

After being banned from Avamar El Cid joined Caligus, then Ubent. (El Cid served in Caligus at the same time as Requiem.) On March 22, 2006, El Cid joined the Kalmar Islands. 14 days later, he started the rebellion.

Checking the histories of his cronies, Artanis and Asmodeus, a pattern begins to form. Artanis, the new Judge of the rebel government, started a career in Caligus during the time El Cid was also in Caligus. From reports of other Caligan nobles, El Cid and Artanis were both despised by most Caligan nobles. They were constantly involved in duels, and disrupting the realm. El Cid was fined for his disruptive actions. Rather than pay the fine, he left Caligus. Three days after El Cid left Caligus for Ubent, Artanis followed. Seven weeks later, both of them left Ubent to join the Kalmar Islands. In fact, on the same day that El Cid was banned from Avamar, Artanis' sibling Tasadar was also banned from Avamar, for continued disobeying of orders.

Asmodeus, however, shows no apparent connections to Avamar, Caligus, or Ubent. Three weeks after starting his career in Perdan, Asmodeus left to join the newly formed Kalmar Islands. After 10 weeks of serving no position in the government, Asmodeus apparently got power hungry and joined the rebellion. It worked, as he was appointed Banker in the new government in return for his support.

The Response

The real of Kalmar Islands was allied with other realms, including Perdan and Caligus. Additionally, Kalmar Islands had declared peace with all other realms, with the notable exception of Ibladesh. As a result, this rebellion has met with much anger from realms across the lands. Queen Lorraine of Perdan immediately announced her support for Prometheus and the rightful government of Kalmar Islands. Rumours abound that several realms are sending troops to support the re-establishment of the rightful monarchy.

Recently, oracle has initiated a counter-rebellion against El Cid's tyranny. Oracle left Old Rancagua when the Kalmar Islands were discovered. Over time, oracle rose in power in the previous government and was appointed Duke of Chaos Temple.

Statements

Update, April 7, 2006 - El Cid, the rebel ruler, and Sir Lalakis, have both issued statements concerning the recent rebellion.

Update, April 10, 2006 A couple more letters from the various involved parties.

The Aftermath

Update, May 4, 2006 - After almost a month of tyranny under El Cid, Gnaeus initiated a rebellion against the tyrannical realm. The rebellion succeeded, and Gnaeus reformed the government as a monarchy. Examining the new appointments and region lords, it is immediately obvious that the new power brokers in the Kalmar Islands will be composed almost entirely of former Avamarians. Here's a quick run-down on some of these poeople:

  • Ruler: Gnaeus - Gnaeus' fellow family member Philip was high in the power structure of Avamar, holding positions as the Duke af Avamar, and Count of Montijo.
  • General: SansTort de Mapo - SansTort was the general of Avamar for several months.
  • Judge: Draxius - Draxius was a noble of Avamar for several months. Fellow family member Kira Yamato served as banker and judge of Avamar several times.
  • Banker: Billy Bob Brubaker - While not associated with Avamar, Billy Bob has been in the Kalmar Islands since the beginning, when it was a colony of Perdan. He served as the Banker under the original monarchy. Billy Bob obviously sided with the rebel El Cid, since he was not banned by the tyranny, unlike over half of the original monarchy's nobles.
  • Lord of Lundel: Donna Ragna - Donna Ragna was intimately involved in the former Avamar. She served as both judge and banker several times. After the fall of Avamar, Donna Ragna joined Oligarch. It is interesting that although she served as Judge in Oligarch, she apparently felt no loyalty to Oligarch at all. She jumped at the chance to join El Cid, whom she herself banned from Avamar for causing unrest, abandoning Oligarch as it came under heavy siege by Sirion, the realm that destroyed her beloved Avamar.
  • Lord of Bastad: Aramir - Here's another virtuous character. Banned from Avamar for treason, inciting others to commit treason, and corruption. The ban was lifted the next day. Obviously the judge involved really did their homework on that one. Aramir was alter banned from Oligarch by... guess who? You got it, Donna Ragna herself, as a "Member of the Underground, planning a rebellion against Oligarch". Looks like good ol' Donna Ragna really picked some good company when she joined the Kalmar Islands, huh?
  • Lord of Alvaret: Thanfedal - Another former Avamarrian who joined Oligarch. Like many other former Avamarians, Alvaret abandoned Oligarch during its time of greatest need, just as Sirion began a siege of Oligarch's capital. What a great way to show loyalty to the realm that took them in during their time of need, and offered them the opportunity to strike back at their enemies.

Other notable former Avamarians in the Kalmar Islands:

  • Kamenos - A former general of Avamar, and another Oligarch deserter.
  • Fionn
  • El Cid, One - El Cid, the tyrant himself, and family member One have long ties to Avamar, serving as ruler and banker, all the way to back to when it was West Sirion.
  • Aunt Emilia
  • Kamenos - Duke of Avamar, also served a Judge and General of Avamar. Also abandoned Oligarch to join the Kalmar Islands. Family member Peinalas also recently left Oligarch, and emmigrated to Atamara.
  • Janus - Former Avamarian, went to Oligarch, abandoned Oligarch to join the Kalmar Islands. (Starting to see a pattern here?)
  • Tasadar - Guess what? Another former Avamarian, banned from Avamar by none other than... yep... Donna Ragna again! This time for not following orders. Family member Artanis is one of El Cid's cronies that joined in the initial rebellion.
  • Hamin - A little twist on the usual story here: Family member Hamina was a former Avamarian who moved over to Oligarch. Instead of outright jhoining the Kalmar Islands, Hamina retired so Hamin could start a new career in the Kalmar Islnads the same day. Oh well. The end result is the same. Family member Asmodeus was one of El Cid's cronies that joined the original KI rebellion.
  • Pipeta
  • Lalakis - Lalakis and his family have a long, long history of involvement with Avamar, back to the days of West Sirion. They served in many capacities, including ruler, general, duke, and judege many times. After the fall of Avamar, Lalakis joined Oligarch and proclaimed himself the Ruler of Avamar in Exile. Like so many of his compatriots, Lalakis abandoned Oligarch at the start of the siege by Sirion, to go join the Kalmar Islands for the explicit purpose of reforming Avamar.
  • Aero - While not a former Avamarian, Aero also left the faltering Oligarch to join the Kalmar islands.

So there you have it. Of the current 47 nobles in the Kalmar Islands, 18 have very strong ties to the former Avamar. For a realm that considered itself to be the height of democracy, it is very disappointing that they were so willing to join El Cid's tyranny to convert it into their new Avamar. So much for all those lofty ideals of fairness and democracy. I bet they can feel proud that they have now helped to destroy three realms.
