Account of the Duel between Dark Count Bowie Ironsides and Duke Hexic Jeckyl

Duke Hexic had taken it upon himself to loot the city of Sallowtown for monetary benefit, but the Dark Count chided him for doing so. Later on, as the Dark Count ordered the realm to prepare and launch the Crusade for Sallowtown, Duke Hexic said the realm would make more gold if they were allowed to loot Sallowtown. Again, the Dark Count said he disliked such actions because it hurt the people's trust in the realm and would thereby make a takeover that much more difficult. Duke Hexic was not pleased that the Dark Count assumed authority over the city, and challenged him to a duel.

Dark Count,

To acquire the necessary food an gold, we first have to recover the blow struck to D'Hara by the Mad Queen. We are still recovering. Under her rule our food stores we emptied and at last harvest we faced starvation. We are currently buying as much food as comes our way, and one of my looters has a caravan to store food which he loots. Which brings me to gold. We are also working to acquire gold through looting, in addition to our regular taxes. There are not many targets to loot, and I believe I'm currently the only Marshal that has given instructions to go looting. And if memory serves, you condemned the looting of Sallowtown, which is by far the most convenient target for my army to loot. So are you saying you do not want us to loot Sallowtown, in order to build a force to conquer it? You speak of a crusade. Well, a crusade is an act of war. You seek to war Sallowtown and conquer it. Your words are contradictions.

Duke Hexic,

I do not think it wise to loot a city we will try to take into our fold. Would that not just make things so much more difficult for us in the future?

Can we not gain a right of passage through Paisly? Loot that continent as we had done traditionally. There is a much greater wealth on that side anyway.

Count of Qubel

Military Council,

Here is evidence on why I dislike looting in the city of Sallowtown. Duke Hexic perhaps if you can think of a way to reverse this you may loot as you like.

Undercover Report (Sallowtown): * D'Hara is hated, nay loathed here.

We will make slow progress against this, and there will be troubles.

The Dark Count,

Bowie Ironsides

Count of Qubel

Ha! My friend, it is you who should weep for the consequences!

I dislike your wanton use of my city. It is not your financier. You dislike my protection of it, as I am an obstacle to your fortune. What perfect circumstances for a duel.

The Dark Count finally arrived at the arena he set up in Qubel. A special location, designed in the ancient style of the Sallowsian duelling ring.

It was a wooden picket fence squared around a round ring. Outside of the fence were seating arrangements. The Sallowsians could never resist a crowd, especially for a duel of honour. For they were a people of dignity and command, and duelling was the purest form of respect to your opponent. Never would they rely on assassins.

So here was the Dark Count at the centre amidst a crowd of Qubelli. He was wearing the traditional fighting uniform. Brown leather armour and a leather helmet with a blond horse tail raising out of it.

He spoke,

"Duke Hexic, hear me! You disgrace my authority over Sallowtown with your insolent looting. I am Prince of Sallowtown, the incarnate of the Dragon Sallow. How dare you threaten me with consequences! Face me in the ring of honour!"

And he waited for the reply or the battle to start first.

The Dark Count,

Bowie Ironsides

Count of Qubel

Duke Hexic entered the ring and replied to the Dark Count’s boast.

“You are Prince of nothing. Sallowtown is not under your command, and neither am I! You disgrace yourself. Now fall on my blade!”

Then the duel began.

The mastery of sword was seen in both of them, though Duke Hexic was the superior in form and follow through. The Dark Count’s movements were swift and sharp, while the Duke gracefully parried each attack, and then counterattacked.

Then the Duke made his advance with vigour, slashing and thrusting his sword towards the retreating Dark Count. Duke Hexic made it so close that he split the leather on the Count’s chest armour. The Dark Count pushed Duke Hexic away and launched his sword down towards him. The Duke shrunk and dodged then swiped forward cutting across the Dark Count. Duke Hexic then pushed back and knocked down the Count.

The Duke dropped his foot into the Dark Count who caught it and twisted, as the Duke turned in pain, the Dark Count used a smaller weapon in his other hand to cut the back of the Duke’s grounded leg. The Dark Count then stood up lifting the Duke off his feet and onto the ground. Now it was the Count’s turn to stomp. But Duke Hexic rolled out of the way and quickly leapt to his feet, regaining his stance.

They squared off again. Their swords were in perfect position, their form exceptional, and their ferocity swelling. Since both were using a neutral strategy, their styles were matched. When one would strike the other would defend, and when the other defended the one would know how to overcome it. They matched like this for a few minutes trying not to exhaust themselves.

Now, the Dark Count made his advance using a slightly altered form of the neutral style, one he learned by studying ancient Sallowsian duelling techniques. When the Count made his way in, he used his body to encourage the Duke to attack, expecting this, the Count then closed the space and disarmed the Duke.

Grabbing his arm, the Dark Count twisted it into a lock and held the Duke. He then dropped his own sword and elbowed the Duke in the back knocking him to the ground. On the ground, the Duke turned and tried to get up, but the Dark Count was too quick and pinned him to the dirt between his legs. The Dark Count then began punching the Duke consecutively with both hands. Then the Dark Count dropped his forehead into the face of the Duke, stunning him magnificently.

The Duke was dazed and his face was gore. The Dark Count grabbed his armour and lifted him a bit, face to face.

“Do you see this face? I am the Prince of Sallowtown. I am your consequence.”

The Dark Count pulled out his smaller weapon, held down the struggling Duke and opened up a gash on his cheek, leaving a nasty wound.

The Duke, exhausted, lay on the ground defeated.

The Dark Count stood up and raised his arms triumphant!

“See me Qubelli! It is by the grace of the ancestors that I have won this day! I perform the correct rituals, I show them the respect and devotion they deserve, and they have responded by granting me victory! For I am the incarnate of Prince Sallow, ultimate authority of the Sallowsians!”

The crowd cheered, probably because it was a good show.

As they started clearing out, the Dark Count ordered his servants to clean up the Duke and take him to the Count’s estate where he could recover.

The Dark Count knelt down and praised his ancestors, thanking them for an outstanding duel.
