Rickhart smirked at the memory, feeling no guilt or remorse for how sweet that revenge had been. He had taken a few minutes to satisfy the surge of hatred at what injustice he had suffered. Flicking his long, wild mane of brown hair back from his eyes, Rickhart rode hard through Oberndorf for a place to pledge his sword.

Fontan, he had heard, needed warriors... and he had fire in his heart.

He Of The Wild

To be filled in with events from Rickhart's period as a reaver and marshal in the Sultanate of Asena to his journey home to Arcaea, discoveries of his heritage and rise to Lord Protector and commander of the Northern Alliance.

The second bastard son of Aerywyn, albeit with further dubious origins than Caim, Rickhart was given a more common name than the kind normally reserved for a son of the Haerthorne family. Unlike Caim he was not groomed to be his father's heir. Because of this he grew up with the same access to the education that his older brother recieved, but was not pressured to use it. Despite this he was favoured by the family tutor Ciertal, who felt concern for the boy's welfare as much as he did for Caim who was more exposed to his father's more distressing temperaments, and the old man certainly had reason to be worried. Whereas Caim was calm and attentive during his lessons, Rickhart expressed a greater interest in roaming the woods of Saex where the old holiday home lay than in learning the codes of chivalry, and took a liking to terrorising the chickens they kept there. His involved himself with the farm boys as well, often fighting with and leading them in further acts of mischeif as he grow older.

As they grew older, the difference between the boy was showing itself most explicitly in their appearances. Caim made sure to comb the knots out of his hair as his aunt Aeriel had taught him, after taking a liking to her favourite nephew having longer locks, whereas Rickhart followed the example of the old stories of men who braided their hair and went into battle naked. The phrase 'long hair makes handsome men beautiful, and ugly men fearsome' was taken to heart by the two. Although Rickhart wasn't exactly ugly, he enjoyed a certain wild ferocity.

When he had finally convinced his guardians to officially let him take care of himself, he took a sword and travelling clothes and set south, searching for adventure in the wilds. Unfortunately this tale was not a happy one for the young Rickhart to begin on. Though the lands of Greater Aenilia were kind to him, he was accosted in the Principality of Zonasa by a local lord and High Justice. A troop of his soldiers met the boy and after a quick scuffle managed to take him into custody, where a way to extract punishment on the Haerthorne family was conceived through Rickhart. Unable to defend himself and with no one knowing where he was, the Zonasan Judge had his clothes confiscated and set the prison guards upon him each night, beating him bloody until he looked more like the wild creatures he ran with than ever before. The reasons for his imprisonment were flimsy although not baseless, claiming that his father was responsible for the slaughter of several of the lord's kinsmen. Arcaea had made many enemies through her victories, and Aerywyn's position in them had condemned his son.

After several weeks of this he managed to escape, leaping upon a single guard as he entered, wrestling with him until he managed to kill him with his own sword. Without much time before he would be caught again (and convinced that travelling north would be too dangerous), Rickhart stowed away in a ship bound for the East Continent.
