Rothford

Even from an early age, Rothford Grimm had shown signs that he was an unusual boy. For instance, rather than play with wooden swords and shields as other younglings were wont to do, he would often be found studying rabbits as they hopped about searching for carrots. Nature was his passion. He collected bug specimens, sketched drawings of birds that populated the Grimm estate, and spent more time sleeping in the forest than in the comfort of his own bed. His family bore this good-naturedly, but were often annoyed at how aloof he was from the rest of the family (including his twin younger brothers: Damien and Joland).

Events came to a head when, upon reaching the fourteenth year of his life, Rothford declined to squire for a Taran knight. Up until this point, Rothford's father had been forgiving of Rothford's unusual characteristics, yet Rothford's refusal was the crossing of a threshold. The father could no longer bend to his eldest son's wishes and he threatened Rothford with a whipping. That was not enough to convince Rothford to submit and, after receiving ten lashes from his father's hand, he ran away.

Little is known of Rothford's first years as a runaway. It can be presumed that he was a day laborer, perhaps working on a nearby farm or as an assistant to a traveling merchant.

However, after several years as thus, he grew bored with his life and turned to banditry. Information from this part of his life is much more detailed. By then, he was eighteen years old and had grown into a well-formed adult, although he was still inexperienced with the sword. He still maintained his love of nature, and kept several large dogs as pets.

For five years, he ran with a group of outlaws called Eric's Irregulars. Rothford kept his identity as the eldest son of a noble family secret, and by the end of those five years, he was elected by acclimation to head the bandit group after a raid had gone awry and Eric suffered an arrow wound to the heart.

Under the new name of Rothford's Irregulars, Rothford continued to build their reputation as a bandit group for the next two years as they traveled throughout Atamara, stealing from caravans and unaware travelers they ran across. But once again, Rothford found himself bored and, to shake up his life, he convinced his gang of vagabonds to go legitimate, to fight and gain prestige as soldiers in the wider world.

They began by joining the realm of Taselak

Damien

Joland
