Great Sage Pafizi Parade

The Great Sage Pafizi Parade is celebrated by all villages and communities in An Najaf. It is a celebration of An Najaf’s greatest thinker who shaped much of their intellect and practices. The Four Festivals themselves are said to have originated from Pafizi who is quoted as saying, “We should celebrate the turn of each season with a festival!”

The tradition has all women dress up in the traditional An Najaf clothing, colours of purple and blue, while the men dress up as monkeys, the commemorative animal of Pafizi. Then, the groups dance to music in line around everyone’s homes while throwing purple and blue confetti.

Collection of Material

Just before lunch, the Collection of Material begins. All of the children walk door to door gathering wood, skins, leaves and any other disposable items from the farm or the home and pile it up in the community centre. Pyres are then built using the piles by the local Fire Handlers.

While the children are gathering material, the adults go door to door exchanging homemade wine. It is customary to share wine from your home with your neighbours, and so this occasion is a time of neighbourly gift giving.

{OOC: like Halloween except during the afternoon and collecting disposables and wine, not candy!)
