Amidst the forests, amidst the plains and therein on the coast is a sight to behold - Aix. As a regional centre of knowledge, civilization and trade, the city united the smaller lands in its vicinity and thusly formed the Duchy of Aix. Surrounded by a high stone fortress, the city has repelled the barbaric onslaughts and sieges throughout the ages. It has long been a vassal of the Crown of Perdan, and as such the Perdanese culture is most defined in Aix, but through conquest of steel the city has ultimately sworn vassalage to the Church of Ibladesh when it became the capital of Diocese of Aix.

Description

Aix was a rich forest land full of scholars and the famous library of Aix built many years ago. Perdan City is our history, Partora our capital, but we all admire Aix for the perfect equilibrium with nature you meet there and the high knowledge all great philosophers and spiritual men spread in the city. Aix has finally returned to Perdan's control. The city and it's people are trying to rebuild after Perdan's army liberated them from the tyrrany of DoA and Ibladesh. It will take years to repair the damage, since the last Duke of Aix destroyed everything before he run away. Aix Duchy is welcoming all regions that want to share it's wealth of knowledge. Especially bordering regions is a must for improved economy, a better management of resources via trading. - A slightly dated description of the current status of the region.

History

Aix has been a historical bastion of Perdan, periodically being turned in periods of extreme turmoil but always returning to Perdan. For a time, Aix was the capital of Perdan and the monarchy whilst Perdan City was occupied by foreign forces, and it maintains a number of traditions from this time period, namely units with Royal assent, and the presence of the Duke of Aix in the military chain of command.

In recent times, the city was ruled with an iron-fist by Duke Banetal, leaving the city a depressed shadow of its glory as the capital of Perdan. With the mysterious disappearance of Duke Banetal in mid-1020, King Smiddich appointed Lucius Poe, former Judge-Magister of Perdan to the position of Duke in commemoration of his service to the realm. The people of Aix are cautiously optimistic about this appointment, having lived under a reign of terror for so long under Duke Banetal.

Along with the rest of the Duchy of the Grand Court, during the Perdan-Perleone war of Early 1021, the city's allegiance was switched from Perdan to Perleone by Duke Lucius Poe. It was soon returned by the Duke following the cessation of hostilities between the two kingdoms, but amidst the carnage of Queen Alyssa being protested out of her rulership, leadership elections, and ensuing controversy over King Richard de Brey's diplomatic approach, Duke Lucius Poe remained unpunished for what some described as treason. He stepped down from the lordship of the city in preparation for punishment, but left the realm some weeks afterward northwards when judgement was not passed by the King or Judge-Magister.

The Imperator of Perdan, the young Earl of Brive Daario Vulparan, was appointed by King Richard to the role of Duke of the Grand Court in mid-1021 and was appointed the Margrave of Aix hours afterward.

City Landmarks

Cúirt na Baintrí

The grand keep of Cúirt na Baintrí sits commandingly over the Golden City, the heavily fortified home of the residing Margrave of the city.

Almost labyrinthine in its layout, ornate corridors snake their way between the halls of varying sizes and smaller, more functional, rooms that facilitate the daily workings of a ducal court and the administration of a not insignificantly large city.

The ancient name of Cúirt na Baintrí is said to be borrowed from a forgotten language, supposedly meaning The Widow’s Court in the common tongue. The mythical origins of such a name, however, has been long twisted in hushed tones told in servants quarters and the rooms of visiting nobility; the truth of it has no doubt been lost to the mists of fancy and the exuberant imaginations of generations come and gone.

Prospero Square

The Old Town

The Gates of Aix

Over time, the city walls of Aix have seen passageways, alleys, entrances, gatehouses, barbicans, and bars built, used, unused, degrade, and restored. The latest status of these ever-changing entrances to the inner parts of the city, the city proper, is owed to construction and restoration efforts during the rule of Duke Daario, with the Duke identifying them as a key element in ensuring the ongoing security and safety for the people and workings of the city. Duke Daario ordered nearby houses, mead halls, and fortifications knocked through, renovated, or repurposed to become fortified manors for the Knights and Dames of the city, from which they may do their business in the day-to-day running of the estate that surrounds their manor and the associated gatehouse, from which they oversaw the collection of The Toll, and where they may barrack and train their troops.

Fyshwharf Gate

Located in the south-western corner of the city walls, the bustling Fyshwharf Gate serves as the main entrance of the fisherfolk that work from the labyrinthine piers and jetties that make up the Fyshwharf of Aix. It is said that the paving stones that line Fyshwharf Gate's barbican and even the portcullis that sits within the gatehouse walls would release the stench of fish guts, shellfish, and roe for weeks on end even if the trade that gives the gate its name ceased overnight.

Old Town Gate

Located on the eastern side of the city walls, the Old Town Gate bridges the gap between the sprawling suburbs that latch onto the exterior of the walls, indeed expanding beyond them greatly in a steady stream of villages and hamlets, and the Old Town of the city proper.

Prospero Gate

Located in the south-eastern corner of the city walls, the ornate Prospero Gate stands over one of the grandest plazas of the city, the ancient Prospero Square.

Traitors' Gate

Located on the northern side of the city walls, the heavily fortified Traitors' Gate watches over the Prison of Aix and for decades has served as the final passageway into the city for those sentenced to execution for the gravest of crimes. Due to this fear-inspiring history and the tall tales shared about its dark past by suspicious city folk and travelling seers, Traitors' Gate is the least used of the gates by denizens of the city. Foreign merchants and tradesfolk would be none the wiser however and take advantage of the lesser traffic, no doubt unaware of the despaired mutterings from locals as they pass, for none which enter the Traitors' Gate are destined to ever leave the city alive.
