The Belt of Betrayal

The Characteristicts

As one would expect from a common belt, it is made of some kind of leather. However, not quite the type of leather you would have guessed, namely human. None the less, it has the regular brownish appearance that would surprise none. The lock then again is entirely made of silver, completely covered by entwined symbols of an ancient time.

The Discovery

In the city of Talex, Ethiala, a formerly unknown adventurer named Lucius had made his way through the catacombs that lay beneath the houses. He had heard the halls of the dead were long and reached far within the earth. Lucius had quickly found what he had expected, some of the dead who wished to remain dead no longer. It was to his surprise that the further he went through their scattered rank the broader the path became. Soon Lucius faced fierce opposition but using the torch he had brought to guide him he could crush their resistance in a long fight.

The hall still smelled after burned flesh and blood as he entered a large chamber. Undead were crawling in from other adjecent paths and Lucius embraced himself for another, even fiercer battle. When he held up his torch to assess the odds, he noticed a tomb in the midst of the chamber. As he slashed his way through the undead towards this tomb he heard cracks coming out of it and dust was slowly blown upward from it. As the last undead defender of the tomb fell to the ground a skeleton pulled himself up out of the tomb and watched him approach.

As Lucius nears he sees the skeleton highten a fearsome broadsword from its grave and prepare for the duel. As he throws himself on the undead champion he notices that this skeleton is quicker than the other undead and moves like a well-trained human. The duel rages on taking a tole on every skill that Lucius possesses until he finally strikes down the champion. As the skeleton crumbles into bones Lucius notices a belt lying in the midst of the remains of its corpse. When Lucius picks it up the belt unlocks without any urging.

The Statistics

This accessory gives 4 prestige to its bearer.

The History

On the walls in the chambre within the catacombs Lucius found several writings of an ancient time. When he studies them he cannot make sence of them until he wore the belt. As if the symbols on the belt worked as a link between his consciousness and the writings, he could read them.

They spoke of an old King who had once reigned over an empire that used to be even bigger than the Far East itself, when the shores were further in the sea and the mountains higher. This King descended from a royal family that was rumoured to possess magical powers. It must be true, because at the time of the story he was over fourhundred years old. The old King however felt his yearning for life fade away and wanted to die in peace. Therefor he asked for his son who he had barely spoken to, but who was of his own pure blood.

He told his son, "My boy, I want to die." As in those times they did not know the cun of subtleness yet.

He gave his belt to his son and with it his power over the continent. So the King perished silently and peacefully in his royal bed. His son however had grown so distant of his father that he had never learned the meaning of the belt. Magic was foreign to him and he cared few for his ancestors. He was unjust and bloodthirsty, but he never punished those who did not deserve it. Until the day he sacked an entire city out of boredness, knowing that no one would oppose him. Yet he was wrong. The Belt of Betrayal, the one his father had given him was enchanted as it wa made from the skin of the first King of history. Would the bearer ever strike at the innosent, the rightiousness of the oldest King that lies in the Belt would take away the bearer's mind, leaving an empty body behind.

The son died and left his empire in turmoil. It was split up in kingdoms when the nobles realised the line of the ancient kings ad been broken. They decided to burry the son in a tomb deap within the earth. The Belt still holds his mind, but it serves also in other ways. You may not strike the innosent still, but the magical mind of the son that still remains in the Belt can warn the bearer of who is innosent and who isn't. It was burried with the son, in a place called Talex.

The Belt's present, Beluaterra

Allegedly buried in the grave of some deranged noble long lost, somehow the Belt of Betrayal managed to reach the island of Beluaterra, most likely carried by an emigrating noble. No matter how it got here, in the end up as part of the treasure of a foul monster north the continent, in the cold field of Lastfell, until the adventurer and hunting enthusiast Mijhail slain the beast and claimed its price.

Being a tradesman and known provider of intriguing objects to the highest of nobles north the continent, Mijhail will most likely sell this Belt to a well provided buyer.
