Greetings assembled warriors.

I extend my warmest hospitality that you have answered the call to come to our aid. The Vales and me personally will not forget it. To see the assembled list of great warriors and leaders fills me with hope we may yet drive the necromancer from the north! It is especially nice to see a few familiar names that i once faced as enemies in battle - to put aside this and to come to our shows tremendous character and I salute you. Drinks on Arjan when this is finished! Now to the matter at hand - General Harfal has taken full responsibility for the clash 24 hours ago caused by a Tharlmarkin noble and after tempers flared attempts to pursuade his men to return but we do not know if he will come. General Grante has just led his men to liberate Heen but still intends to send significant forces. The question is do we wait for these reinforcements or strike now? At present our joint forces here are a bit less than the undead horde, normally odds I would not fear but having faced the wedge charge of that single hell driven unit I am a little reluctant. However, reports from Nothoi suggest we do not have much time before the next gigantic horde is upon us. So I ask you just to be patient a tiny bit longer but have your packs ready to march. We await news from General Grante but may have to march without.

Imperator Arjan,

We have the mobile might to match this Legion if we take the field with caution though even then it will be a bloody battle and many good warriors will lose their lives.

We've seen that infantry don't survive long against the undead charge so we should maximise their impact early in the battle. Ranged forces we want to keep as far from the melee as possible so they have plenty of time to snipe.

We have ranged SF so we don't need to worry about archers routing when the melee line is overwhelmed.

Snow lay thick upon the northern plains as Winter deepened its hold and the ancient Eastway which ran from Jyl all the way to Gethsemene and thence to Fianik was peppered with black hoofprints and wheel ruts, flanked to the south by thick drifts of sparkling white powder.

Aibhlidhn's caravan snaked slowly along the Eastway in convoy with that of young Rogan, a knight whose courage in recent campaigns had made a strong impression on her. It wasn't as if the Angry Agyrians were short of those worthy of praise, for though few in number they had always possessed a characteristic ferocity in battle. Yet still she found herself taking an exceptional liking to the young warrior and it had been pleasant to tarry a little and share his company, riding leisurely at the head of the column and discussing matters of little import to the Wise but from which much good humour could be enjoyed. It was a pleasant respite after months of hard campaigning and the inevitable long discussions of strategy and tactics which accompanied them.

In truth these battles with the Necromancer were starting to take their toll and she feared a day might yet come when she must retire from the battle lines, for though the years had been kind to her as with all the line of Moira, she was no longer in the first flush of youth and her bruised flesh seemed to heal slower and slower with each passing year. No doubt that distant shadow whose presence was felt so clearly throughout the lands of man had set his enchantments against the Queen of Ar Agyr, the one enemy who had set herself resolutely against him since the fall of Minas Nova and the rise of the Sunken Lands, but that alone was surely not to blame.

The Queen possessed many protections beyond those of the disciplined veterans who marched beneath her banner, both heirlooms of power and tomes of ancient lore. For long years she had astutely gathered the tools needed to fight as no other ruler of men had fought, whether against the Lords of the Nether or the corrupted heirs of the ancient Loremasters, in the process expending such fortunes as many realms might never amass in all their long history. Every art she had learned from her kinswomen had been turned to this one task, every mystery of Elfland in her youth, every secret snatched from the Higher Realms or traded on the Moonbeam Roads, and every friendship forged in the heart of battle.

And yet...

And yet for all that she knew... For all that she possessed... For all whom she inspired to stand with her...

And yet for all these things she knew it was not enough.

Humanity was losing ground and all her efforts along with those of her peers were barely even slowing the pace of loss...

It wasn't just Fianik. It was Creasur. It was Fheuvenem. It was Iato and Ete City. It was Jiddington and Eylmon and Irombro and Grehk. It was Rines and Athol Margos.

And what of Tahgalez where the Witch-King once ruled? Was that too now under the Necromancer's sway?

All this she kept to herself, locked safely away where her people would never see it, discussed only in her closest councils and even then only at need. No, not even her court or the servants of her chamber knew the true weight upon her shoulders.

She was Aibhlidhn, Queen of the Five Duchies of Ar Agyr, and to bear such a burden was her duty and her honour. But she was also Aibhlidhn the Balance Walker, a sorceress in all but name, for she had drawn heavily on the Flow in recent years, the need being great, and she knew there was always a price to be paid for such fleeting power. This was the lesson Moira had spent so long teaching her. A lesson with which she still wasn't ready to come to terms.
