A duchy (AKA, dukedom) is a group of territories which include a city region that acts a local capital for the city-less regions around it. I suppose it's dictionary description summarizes it:

The option to create a new duchy can be found in the "politics" tab. Only City or Townsland regions which already have a lord in place can become new Duchies. The current lord of this region will automatically become the new duke. For this reason it is important to have the intended new duke installed as lord of the City or Townsland before you establish it as a new duchy.

If you are already duke and your duchy has just gained a new city or Townsland, you may want or need to split your duchy. If you want to remain in control of the current duchy, see the process above. If however you want to be ruler of the new duchy the process is slightly more complicated.

-First step down as Marquis of the original city or towns-land and appoint yourself lord of the new city.

-Second appoint a replacement lord to the original city. He will need to step down from previous titles and claims

-Third you may wish to rename your duchy now, this will become the name of your new duchy.

-Fourth declare the original city that was the basis of the original duchy a new duchy.  At this point you can give this duchy the name of the old duchy for the sake of continuity.

When this is done the new duchy will be a single region duchy. Region lords will most likely want to switch back to their original duchy.

A duchy is a political grouping of regions of a realm, ruled by a duke or duchess. Dukes are appointed by the ruler.

  • Rulers have the option to create new duchies. The option is found in the "Politics" tab. A new Duchy can only be created from City, Stronghold or Townsland regions. That region must currently have a lord who is not already a duke. The current Lord of that region will be promoted to be the duke of the new duchy, and his region will automatically be added to the new duchy. After creation, the duchy no longer needs to include a city, stronghold, or townsland region. In fact, the duchy does not require any regions at all to continue being a duchy. It will remain a duchy until the ruler dissolves it.
  • Rulers have the option to dissolve a Duchy that has no regions.
  • Rulers have the option to rename Duchies, at a cost of 50 gold per renaming.
