Recruitment and Maintenance of Units - Part I

Recruiting

In any realm, you can only recruit troops in the capital, which, in our case is Foda. There's a limit to how many men you can command; it depends on your honor and prestige. As a new player it's best to stick with the number of men you start with initially. After your first battle or two, you will probably have only a few men left and you will need to return to the capital to recruit more troops. In this case, you should report your unit's stats to the General and ask permission to travel to Foda. When you recruit new troops, you must pay the current troops so that pay day is the same for all of them.

Paraphernalia

Paraphernalia are things and people that you can purchase/hire to enhance your force. While you start your career with a small force of men, you don't have any paraphernalia. Some paraphernalia cost gold to purchase and some require weekly pay. Each type of paraphernalia will only be available in regions that have a certain type of building that produces the paraphernalia -- either a factory, recruitment center, or training center. You can usually figure out which items are available where by reading the Banker's bulletin.

Scouts

Trained scouts are very important as accurate information is critical. You can send out any of your men to scout adjacent regions and they return with information about the region, its population, food and gold stores, buildings, and any troops present. But only trained scouts can gather information about the strength and movement of troops in that region. You should always have two scouts, because sometimes they become lost, killed or captured and never return from a scouting mission.

Healers

Healers are just as critical, if not more so, than scouts. Without a healer, men injured in battle will die unless you can get them to a region with a House of Healing. While not as effective as a House of Healing, a healer can work in the field to save your injured men. They are expensive, however, so I usually only hire one at a time.

Banners

Banners make your men feel more like an army. They increase morale, improve ability to work and fight together (cohesion) and increase effectiveness on the battlefield by improving communication. If you have the gold, you should get 1 banner for every 10 men (e.g. if you have 25 men, get 3 banners). If you're short on gold, you need at least 1 banner for every 20 men.

Carts

Carts make it easier (quicker) to move with injured men, as they can ride in the cart instead of limping along or being carried by healthy men. Carts also increase the amount you can carry when looting, but we don't loot very often (NEVER LOOT WITHOUT PERMISSION!!!). I don't usually carry any carts.

Siege Engines

Siege engines help a lot when attacking an enemy fortification. They slow your forces down when traveling, however, so I only carry them when the General says they might be needed.

To summarize paraphernalia: Get 2 scouts, 1 healer and 1 banner for every 10 or 20 men.

Equipment

Equipment quality depends on two factors -- the combined weapons/armour rating and the damage. Once you hire men, there is no way to change the weapons/armour rating. For this reason, I try to hire troops with a high weapons/armour value. Training is less important than weapon/armour, since training will increase over time. Equipment damage will increase over time. Traveling causes a moderate amount of damage, battles cause a lot of damage and just sitting around will cause a small amount of damage. Obviously, equipment damage has a negative effect on your unit's combat strength. Eventually it will get so high (around 80%) that it will cause injuries to your men. You will have to travel to a region in your own realm that has a weapon smith to make repairs. Making repairs costs money and time, and the amount of each depends on how badly damaged your equipment is. You can repair all damage or some portion of damage if you don't have enough time and/or money.
