Nearly twenty ships sailed past the Islands, from Venas they could barely be seen, they were ships of oak, painted black with bright orange sails flowing in the breeze, the galley was pushed forward even faster by ranks upon ranks of slaves, clad in naught but chain and loin cloth, wretches who would row the oars in time to the beat of the drummer at the bow of the ship or in beat with the whip, it’s flensing hooks ripping and tearing the flesh of those who inquired the wrath of its wielders.

The wielders were men clad in black armour, orange tabards held to the body by black belts, the men wore masks of a dark iron, all wearing the expression of screaming rage.

“FASTER YOU DOGS!” One of the Slave Masters screamed lashing his whip out against a poor man, a farmer from Dwilight, taken months ago in raids.

Up on the quarter deck was a shaded litter, large enough to fit the lounge of the Lady Mistress of the Legion, she sat watching her ship push onwards towards Perdan, she cast a glance back at the man to her right, the Captain of her vessel, she grinned as she caught him staring, she wished she could admire her own appearance, she must look stunning in her battle gown, her Blackstone crown upon her brow.

She looked to one of her bodyguards “Lyle, how goes the rest of the fleet?” Abigail all but purred her question, the guard was unflinching, used to his mistress’s antics, coldly he responded “They are on time, as are we, they are keeping up, you don’t need to execute anyone, yet.”

Abigail laughed sweetly but her laugh carried her cruelness, she grinned “Lyle, bring me a slave, I don’t care who, I am bored.”

Lyle left and in a moment dragged a weak and young man, looking to be in his twenties, he looked sickly, clearly underfed.

Abigail strutted up to the young man, she lowered herself down to look him in the eyes, she took his head in her hands and softly put her lips to the man’s lips, the young man looked confused but became even more so when she stuck a blade in his throat, Abigail tasted his blood and stepped away, leaving the young man to bleed out and choke on his own blood, she licked her lips and savoured the metallic taste, she had been craving battle for so long, finally she would be able to fulfil that craving.

She waved her hand and the body was dumped over the side of the boat, Abigail yawned and then sat back in her lounge “Wake me when we are close.” she said before closing her eyes to try and drift to sleep.

She smiled again, she couldn’t wait.

Apollyon rose onwards from Venas back towards the city, it was about time he refitted anyways.

He looked out to sea and saw vessels, he thought nothing of it and continued to ride, bringing Julius the Turkey with him and his men.

The city of Perdan was quiet and calm, as was the sea. Everyone slept in peace in their houses, everyone but Jacelyn. A strange, unsettling feeling woke him up before dawn and made him look around, leading him to the harbour. He didn't know what it was, but it was not the first time he felt it. Last time he had this feeling, it wasn't long before they were ambushed by northerners in Moyale.

"All right, sir?" Egreda, his loyal captain, must have followed him from their inn, making sure Jacelyn was safe. "Something happened?"

Jacelyn, surprised by her voice, quickly turned around and drew his blade, a well crafted longsword. But as soon as he recognised his companion, he calmed down and turned back to the bay.

"What do you see, Egreda?"

"The sea. Docked ships in the harbour. There is no one, not even the seagulls. Am I missing something, sir?"

"No. There is only a quiet, empty bay. But it is the silence, that scares me. Nothing, no birds, no people, no bugs. Only this darkness and pure silence."

Jacelyn quietly observed the sea, trying to see through the darkness. He was worried, confused by his intuition. He didn't know how, but he knew something was there. And it was coming for them.

"Damn it. Egreda, send a few riders both east and west to watch the sea. If they see anything unusual aproaching the city, have them ride back as fast as they can and warn us. And get a few men on the cliff there, on the other side of the bay. I want to know of everyone who sails into the city."

Egreda ran off into the night to wake up his men, leaving Jacelyn alone in the docks. Somewhere above his head, a single crow cawed.

If only I'd know if I am right, ran through his head. And he soon would, but not for now.

Apollyon looked back out to sea, the boats he saw earlier were closer now, still passing Venas, Apollyon felt his stomach sunk as he saw the bright orange sails.

“Leandra, protect us, they have sent the entire legion.” Apollyon mumbled in despair.

He turned to his men and shouted “TO ARMS, TO ARMS MEN OF PERDAN, FOLLOW ME!”

Apollyon spurred his horse and his men followed at a sprint, Apollyon turned his head and shouted to his bewildered scribe “SEND WORD TO THE OTHERS, THE LEGION COMES!”

I write this missive in the name of Sir Apollyon, he has ordered me to send word and warn you all, off the coast of Venas a large amount of vessels we recognise as Blackstone Legion ships have been sighted, they are sailing still, they appear to be headed to the City of Perdan.

My Lord is riding hard and fast with his men to reach the city and will be there soon.

Heed this warning, an army will likely soon be assaulting the City, my lord has one final message he wished me to pass on.

To Arms Men and Women, To Arms.

In Service,

The Scribe of,

Apollyon Daubeny Knight of Perdan
