A walk in the desert...

The desert was hot and still. The sun was high up in the sky sending its blazing rays towards the golden Heenite sands. Lucilla had hoped that the wind would start blowing so it would cool the air a bit, but no…there was no wind…just heat…suffocating, scorching, almost unbearable heat…

Lucilla was on her way to Heen, but she had a few more hours of walking in the desert before she would reach the capital, she was only a couple of hours away from Hcallow. She was followed closely by two men. The first, a tall, brown haired, rather young man with a demanding posture and the other, a young lad with a frightened look on his face and a bit wobbly on his feet. The first was the captain of Lucilla’s troops, Rambrecht. Geoffrey, coming straight behind him, was the only one from Lucilla’s unit of 30 men who got out of Watto alive. He had sustained a rather serious injury in the battle and had not yet fully recovered, but Lucilla hoped he would soon. He was a brave lad.

At one point in their tiring walk, Rambrecht came closer to Lucilla, cleared his throat and started saying: "Dame Lucilla, there is something I’d like to talk to you about."

Lucilla, lost in her thoughts, gave no reply, instead her mind was wandering on a different course: " One battle, so many dead. "

" Maybe she didn’t hear me…" he thought.

Rambrecht: "Ma’am?"

" Oh! There’s still such a long way to Heen…" thought Geoffrey.

" She must have heard me…I think. But why would she be ignoring me?!? I haven’t said anything to upset her. In fact, I barely exchanged a few words with her since we left Watto. She has been really quiet since the battle. But I really do need to talk to her." Rambrecht was beginning to worry by this point.

He cleared his throat rather loudly and said one more time: "Ma’am?"

Still no answer from Lucilla. " I should have prepared better for the battle. I should have recruited more men, I should have trained them better. There are so many things I should have done…"

" What could I have done to upset her? I really can’t think of anything. Hmm….maybe this morning when I…..but I wasn’t disrespectful or anything…"

"Ma’am, please!" Rambrecht pleaded.

" And this heat! Is there enough heat in other places of the world, for it seems that the sun is sending all its heat to Heen?! " Geoffrey thought as he was started to pant rather heavily.

" At the moment I thought I was doing my best, but now that I go over it again…I could have done better, I could have…"

Is she ignoring me on purpose? Does she think me a poor captain now? Maybe she’ll fire me as soon as we reach Heen! But…

Rambrecht started speaking again in hope that he would finally get Lucilla’s attention: “Ma’am? I really have something important to talk to you about!”

And it would be a bliss if at least my leg wouldn’t hurt as much! ” Geoffrey mused, but didn’t dare say anything aloud.

I must hurry to Heen, recruit more troops and train them really well. I should probably go to the academy and train a bit myself. I must do better next time…

Lucilla quickened her pace and continued to walk not noticing poor Rambrecht.

And now she’s running from me?!? She must be mad at me. But what did I do?

Rambrecht: “I’m sorry ma’am!”

No, not a quicker pace… Darn…” Geoffrey struggled to keep up.

Maybe if I would have fought better less of my realm mates would be injured right now. Maybe if I would’ve advanced in lines then, King Seamus wouldn’t have… I wish I were as brave as he.

Maybe she needs some time for herself? All right, I’ll try and talk to her a bit later. But I do hope she won’t fire me…” Rambrecht shrugged.

I want some ale!
