She claimed that William had an affair with her mother while he was in a campaign. Her mother told her everything about William and her alleged brother and sisters.
When her mother heard that William had accepted Albert into his family, she visited William and told her about Iren. She did her best to convince him that Iren was his daughter. William remembered his brief affair with that woman, but she doubted Iren was his daughter. First of all, she didn't look anything like him, she had brown eyes and blonde hair and looked very much like her mother. And secondly, her mother wasn't a really trustworthy woman. She had good intentions, trying to secure a better future for her daughter, but this wasn't a right way to do so. William sent them both home hoping that they wouldn't insist and visit again.
When she turned eighteen, Iren decided she was never going to become a merchant like her mother, she wanted to become a knight. Her mother had told her about all the deeds her supposed sisters had done and all the adventures they had. After hearing all those stories, Iren decided she was never going to live the life of a peasant. So she decided to travel to Heen, where Lucilla was, and ask Lucilla to help her. She hoped that Lucilla would believe her stories. Lucilla met her once, but didn't believe her so she wasn't going to help her. Iren started doing whatever she could to become a knight.
