Origins

The Aelcred is the worship of Tepseá, the goddess of the land and Cefftir, god of the sea. The Aelcred was founded in Eponllyn on the East Continent. After the fall of the Church of Ibladesh, as well as previous religions of the south, the people went back to their old gods. The rich plains and meadows of the south of the East Continent were flanked on both sides by water, the ocean to the south and the Circle Lake to the north. The people that lived in those regions began to pray again, as their forefathers had done, to the goddess of the land to ask for fertile harvests and the god of the sea for protection from the storms. Tepseá and Cefftir are husband and wife.

Cefftir

Cefftir is the father of the sea and all that live under it. He roams the seas with his following of sea creatures, always ready to do combat with the demi-god Magnus. Magnus wishes nothing more than to feast on the bounties of the land but Cefftir stalks the beast through the depths, protecting his wife’s domain. Their battles create storms that often sweep the coasts. Sailor’s pray to Cefftir for an escort when they set out on their voyages. He is often portrayed in human form with hair and a beard formed from seaweed.

It was Cefftir who created the Circle Lake, striking the volcano with his trident causing it to erupt. Extra land was formed between Nimraw and Dayr Az Zawr, cutting the lake off from the rest of the ocean and providing a calm and safe body of water for the people of the south. They could fish and travel in this sea, unafraid of their ships being attacked by Magnus or their boats capsized by the storms.

Tepseá

Tepseá is the mother of the land and all that live on it. She gave birth to all that lives on the land and it was she who gave knowledge and wisdom to the first people, teaching them how to farm, how to tame the horses of the plains, how to trade and how to live in prosperity on the land she had created. She smiles down upon all creation and causes life to flourish and grow.

But she also defends the land and life like a mother protects her child from the evil of the demi-goddess Ettin, the spirit of death and winter who seeks to smother all in her icy embrace. Each year she tries to cover the land with ice and kill all life, bringing autumn then winter and each year Tepseá fights her off, bringing spring then summer. Ettin also twists Tepseá's creation, sending monsters and raising the dead in order to lash out in frustration at Tepseá's creation.

Every autumn the people gather the harvest and give thanks to Tepseá at the harvest festival for the battle she is about to begin for them and each spring they celebrate defeat of Ettin and the coming of warmth once more at the spring festival which is accompanied by the lighting of candles and lanterns.
