Abykal is a scrubby land along the wide northern river, part of the marches and moors that stretch out between Ikalak and Sandalak. Wild mustangs wander by the riverside. A few dozen ostriches can be found in the eastern dry areas - no one knows how they were introduced to the area. Rumor is that Thaddeus Tandaros brought them with him from Dwilight and set them free in a night of drunken revelry.

The people are sunburnt shepherds, masons and peasants, who descend from rogues and brigands seeking a new life in exile from Atamara, the Far East, and elsewhere. The people still have a dubious reputation and know how to use their implements to kill if they feel someone has something they like. However, it is especially their self-interest, which is despised by their neighbours in Aboal. Abykal once was part of Aboal, but did not want to help its defences and went its own way, because the people of Abykal discovered that Aboal was desired by forces trying to get from Penforth to Ikalak or the other way around. Abykal, however, is often ignored and usually surrenders peacefully once a force obtains control of the surrounding area.

The Viscount resides in the Golden Apple Manor near the coast - far away from possible conflicts. The Golden Apple Orchard is officially a possession of the Viscount, but since most of the Viscounts are not known to be financially shrewd, they usually appoint a Knight to ensure the Orchard is well run. The eastern part of the region is less developped and focusses more on husbandry instead of agriculture. Despite most of the people being shepherds, the part is named of the peculiar bird in the area: Ostrich Range.
