Rotherthorpe is a chilly region, with light but frequent rainfall. While flat, the ground is rocky and the abundance of rocks is the source of the low rock walls that line the roads throughout the region. The main road from York to Leohampton sees heavy traffic but the rest of the region is fairly quiet.

Sheep are a common sight in the area as Rotherthorpe is well known for the high quality wool produced in the region. The wool is sent to York and Leohampton where it is made into numerous products. Many houses and even the Lord's Manor are adorned with a carved ram above the doorway.
