As correspondent for the newly established Leon's Roar, it is my pleasure to bring my verifiable, objective, and utterly true reporting to the fine, literate Nobles of Minas Leon. This month's adventure has taken me to the walled city of Shanandoah, where Silnarian Nobles have steeled themselves against the threat of Minas Leon's impending victory. After being ushered through the gate, I was amazed to find the gathered nobles of Silnaria in a Tavern at the center of the city. When asked why they were spending their evenings drinking and gambling, it seems that the collected strength of the Silnarian Menace had forgotten there was even a war going on! With a bar stool in hand I subtly reminded them of their obligations to their country's diplomatic status vis-à-vis Minas Leon, which led to a scene of chaos and destruction most certainly plaguing the common Taverns of Silnaria on a nightly basis. Upon leaving the Tavern with three less teeth and a string of ears around my neck, I hitched a ride with a local goatherd and made my way to my next destination. | |||

By Lazlo Lemont II | The Editor's Roar: A New Page in York Printing | Opinions & Editorials |
Greetings, and welcome to the first issue of The Leon's Roar, Minas Leon's premier platform for Noble activity. It is this humble editor's hope that in the coming issues, The Leon's Roar will fulfill the promise set forth by its namesake: to be a platform from which the Nobles of Minas Leon might let forth their wondrous roars. Depending on the level of interest and activity, I look forward to incorporating Letters to the Editor, Interviews, Features, and just about every standard method of offering you all a place of recognition and voice. This is, naturally, an ambitious goal, but I hope to achieve it in no short order. In keeping with the aforementioned mission, I welcome any and all submissions to the Paper by Minas Leon nobles. All those hoping to see their words printed need only pass along their submissions to me via messenger- I will then happily take their work and have my printers immediately begin setting it into type. But what of the coming pages this month? In this issue one can take in a quick glance at the major events throughout Atamara in our News Briefs section, shamelessly copied from the leftover typesets abandoned by our predecessor, The York Journal. Drawing one's attention to the left side of the paper, one will find the various sections of the news: editorials, domestic news, international news, and features. In the title portion one can find (from left to right) the author of each piece, a synopsis of the ensuing information, and which section is being covered. I would of course like to highly recommend the enlightening interview with Lady Lisa Seraphen of the Minas Leon Home Guard. Finally, we end with a wonderful bit of correspondence from our agent in the field, Sir Tan Huemoor. I am certain there will be those who don't enjoy his particular style, but far be it from The Leon's Roar to be unwilling to experiment. It is my hope that you will all enjoy this experiment as much as I have enjoyed constructing it. Now, I'll finish by raising my ink jar (and hoping that you will join me) to 100 more issues of The Leon's Roar, 100 years of York Printing, and 100 years of Minas Leon. Hear our Roar! |
By Lazlo Lemont II | Monsters, Anarchists, and Muddy Roads: Oh My! | State of the Realm |
Though our successful campaign continues against the Silnarian dogs, the home front has seen its fair share of action. Nearly half of our regions have had some form of Monster or Undead activity, counting approximately 150 peasant casualties. These beasts also caused production to be diminished in Rotherthorpe, Winwich, and Uforth. Thankfully, the efforts of our Noble Home Guard have been fighting back and working to contain the blight. For more information about the Home Guard situation (as seen from the eyes of a member), please see our feature interview below. A treacherous element stalked our lands while our troops were away, fighting for honor. The Silnarian Infiltrator Hernfelk Lapallanch exposed the Silnarian war effort for all it could be, underhanded and cheap, while cowardly slitting the throats of our brave guards in Nemaha. Through an ingenious plan of cunning, our Royal King presented himself as bait and captured the deviant, thoroughly ensuring the gratefulness of our Nemaha peasants. The Infiltrator's screams under torture were soon heard, and they revealed much under the threat of bathing. Furthermore, our newly conquered regions of Crahandan and Cheltenborne have had trouble adjusting to the enlightened rule of Minas Leon. Afraid of the freedom offered by their gracious conquerors, both regions have suffered an influx of troublesome elements which had to be put down by the sword. Over 500 peasants have been cut down in the past month, their minds warped by the propaganda of the Silnarian menace. It is with a heavy heart, no doubt, that our Nobles, Soldiers, and King maintain a firm hold on the throats of these backward peasants. The anarchic reign of simpletons was further evidenced when Cheltenborne went so far as to throw out their rightful ruler, Margrave Decimus Lanyon, and attempted their own government. As the populace starved and murdered each other senselessly, it was left to the glorious Legion of Minas Leon to call from the Marketplace and explain (in simple language, so that they might finally understand) why they would be obviously better as subjects of the Leohampton Duchy. Finally, a spat of congested and muddy roads placed our armies at a standstill, as refugees fleeing from the various conflicts of Atamara flocked to behold the wonders of York. While it was wonderful to see such a crowd of hopeful peasants, it is hoped that future immigrants might make way so that the Armies which protect them might make quick time through the land. |
By Lazlo Lemont II | Mourning and Celebrations: The Barony's Surrender | Foreign News Update |
An alliance with Darka could not save the Barony of Makar, who faced the united might of the Cagilan Empire, Rieleston, Strombran, Tara, and Lyonesse. In an address passed along to the rulers of Atamara, the Dictator Carystus announced the conditional surrender of the Barony of Makar, pledging to abdicate as soon as the Peace Proceedings are complete. The surrender comes on the heels of two devastating defeats for the Barony/Darka Alliance. Dictator Carystus will seek to "keep the Barony as a political entity if not physical." In a later, less formal dispatch, Dictator Carystus had this to say about his motivation and intentions in the upcoming Peace Talks:
In lighter news, newly elected Queen of Caergoth Katarina Du Couteau announced a tournament to be held in Ash'rily this week. 2000 gold will be awarded to the winner of both the Joust and Swordfighting competitions, with 500 gold going to the second best. |
A Word from Sir Tan Huemoor, Vagabond |
As correspondent for the newly established Leon's Roar, it is my pleasure to bring my verifiable, objective, and utterly true reporting to the fine, literate Nobles of Minas Leon.
