Wirkfyr: A History

Wirkfyr has known human habitation for less than a thousand years. Before then, it was a land of forests, low mountains and river beaches. The loudest sounds were birdsong, wind and waves.

Spectacular wildlife areas preserve Wirkfyr's natural heritage. Enshrining a huge variety of landscapes, vegetation and wildlife, our parks allow you to discover the heart and soul of a country that will never be totally tamed.

From January to April, the thick beech forest that cloaks the lower regions of the region shimmers with a coat of honeydew, filling the air with a delicious sweetness. The honeydew - each drop poised on the end of a threadlike tube that protrudes from the trunk of the tree - is created by scale insects, which process the tree sap into pure sugar. For many native birds, lizards and insects, the honeydew is a source of high-energy food.

This region borders the wild upper and middle reaches of the Great Giblot River, which is Giblot's longest navigable waterway. Beginning beneath the shadow of the central plateau's giant mountains of Steepglades, the river winds its way to the Giblot Sea through an endless procession of forested valleys and hills.

The river was once an important transport route for Giblot and many defensive forts were constructed on headlands along its sinuous course. Early Giblot settlers and traders also used the river for transport, guiding their shallow-draft boats through the long narrow gorges that today provide so much enjoyment for the local youth.

The Wirkfyr region has a very distinctive landscape of river valley systems with steep slopes, razor-sharp ridges and an almost complete cover of native lowland forest.

For bird watchers, there is much to be seen. There are large numbers of native pigeon, fantail and robin. The beautiful blue duck is the target of a Wirkfyr Conservation recovery plan, and numbers are increasing steadily. You can also hope for sightings of kaka and yellow-crowned parakeets. At night it's possible to hear the call of the Wirkfyr Brown Owl.

So, the Wirkfyr region today provides so much enjoyment for everybody, that'll you'll never want to leave!

I hope you enjoy your stay!
